CHAPTER 2: THE MAN CALLED CALEB MORGAN

They escorted my family out within minutes.

My father resisted until two guards placed a hand on his shoulder and simply said, “Sir, don’t.”

That was enough.

When the room finally emptied, I was left shaking, holding both of my babies again. Grace had stopped crying. Noah was breathing softly against my chest.

The security leader stayed behind.

“Your husband left instructions,” he said.

He handed me a sealed envelope.

On the front, Caleb’s handwriting.

For Ellie. Only if everything goes wrong.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a single letter.

Ellie, if you’re reading this, I didn’t make it home. I’m sorry I couldn’t explain everything while I was alive. I kept you away from my work because I wanted you to have a normal life, not mine. But normal doesn’t exist for people like my family—or yours.

My heart stopped.

He continued:

Your father and brother are under investigation for financial coercion and insurance fraud attempts related to my estate. If they come near you during childbirth, activate the protocol under the bed. Don’t hesitate. They will try to take the boy. They believe male heirs give them leverage over the inheritance structure.

I looked up slowly.

The security man was watching me carefully.

“You knew?” I whispered.

He nodded once. “Your husband predicted every move they made today.”

My hands tightened around the letter.

Caleb hadn’t just loved me.

He had prepared for war.
