Chapter 4 — Justice

Chapter 4 — Justice

Three months later...

The courtroom was full.

The surveillance footage needed no explanation.

The jury deliberated less than three hours.

Guilty.

On every count.

His friends were convicted of obstruction and conspiracy.

Several executives who attempted to destroy evidence lost their positions.

Politicians who tried to interfere became the subjects of ethics investigations.

Charities returned donations connected to the family.

Corporations ended their partnerships.

The empire built on intimidation collapsed faster than anyone imagined.

After the sentencing, reporters surrounded me outside the courthouse.

"Miss Carter!"

"Do you regret exposing one of the city's most powerful families?"

I looked toward the courthouse doors.

Power had once walked through them wearing expensive suits and believing it was untouchable.

Now it left in prison uniforms.

I smiled.

"I didn't destroy them."

"They destroyed themselves the moment they believed power placed them above accountability."

The microphones fell silent.

My father stepped beside me.

He hadn't spoken publicly throughout the entire case.

Now he placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"I'm proud of you."

For the first time since that night...

I allowed myself to breathe.

Justice hadn't erased the scars.

It never could.

But it proved something far more important.

Money can buy influence.

Status can buy silence.

Fear can buy obedience.

But none of them can erase the truth.

And when the truth finally walks through the door...
