Chapter 15 - Everything They Took

By eleven-thirty, I had lost my company.

My reputation.

My federal ally.

My father.

And my freedom.

I surrendered.

Not because I was guilty.

Because running would make the lie easier to believe.

The interrogation lasted three hours.

The video placing me at Daniel Webb’s motel was flawless.

Wrong.

But flawless.

My face.

My walk.

My voice.

My car.

Orion did not merely forge evidence.

It built realities.

At two in the morning, the lights went out.

Emergency power activated.

A guard opened the interview room.

“Ms. Vale.”

I looked up.

He placed my purse on the table.

“You’re being released.”

“Why?”

“Charges withdrawn.”

“By whom?”

“No idea.”

Outside, Victor waited.

I almost turned around.

“Elena.”

“You voted with Evelyn.”

“Yes.”

“You gave her Vale.”

“Temporarily.”

I stopped.

He held up an old mechanical key.

“No digital system is secure against someone who designed it.”

“You planned the vote.”

“I planned for her to believe she won.”

“Why not tell me?”

“Because Evelyn reads people better than algorithms.”

He looked at me.

“If you knew, she would see it.”

I wanted to hate him.

Instead, I hated that his plan made sense.

“What did you do?”

“Before the vote, I disconnected the authentication cores.”

“So she cannot release Orion.”

“Not without physical access.”

“Where are the cores?”

He handed me the key.

“Halcyon.”

Of course.

Everything returned to that house.

“What about Mom?”

Victor’s expression darkened.

“We found Celeste’s location.”

“Crosswell Tower?”

“No.”

“She wanted us to think that.”

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“Halcyon.”

I stared.

“She has Mom beneath the estate?”

“Not beneath.”

“Where?”

“The original west wing.”

“There is no west wing.”

Victor smiled sadly.

“There was.”

Halcyon had been renovated after my mother’s disappearance.

An entire section had been sealed behind false walls.

Before we could leave, Claire called.

Her voice was shaking.

“Elena.”

“What happened?”

“I found Damian.”

“Where?”

“At Crosswell Tower.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But he told me something.”

“What?”

“Celeste isn’t my mother.”

Silence.

“Damian found his birth records.”

Claire struggled to continue.

“Celeste adopted us.”

“Who was your biological mother?”

Another pause.

Then the answer:

“Rebecca Cross.”

Augustus’s supposedly murdered daughter.

Sophie’s mother.

I closed my eyes.

That meant Damian.

Claire.

Sophie.

All siblings.

All grandchildren of Augustus Cross.

All raised separately.

All manipulated.

All unknowingly fighting inside the architecture of one man’s secrets.

Victor whispered, “Augustus divided his heirs.”

“Why?”

“To keep them from ever trusting one another.”

My phone vibrated.

Sophie.

One message.

I FOUND MOM.

Then coordinates.

Halcyon Estate.

West side.

And another sentence.

COME NOW. EVELYN IS ALREADY HERE.

We drove through the rain.

At Halcyon, every door stood open.

No steel barriers.

No guards.

No lights.

The mansion looked dead.

Inside the ballroom, broken glass from the gala still glittered across the floor.

I looked toward the wall where Damian had hurt me.

It felt like another lifetime.

A sound came from behind the old orchestra stage.

My father found a concealed latch.

The wall opened.

A corridor.

At the end stood Sophie.

Her face was pale.

“Elena.”

“Where is Mom?”

She pointed through an open doorway.

My mother was there.

Alive.

Standing.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

For the first time in fifteen years, Isabella Vale looked at me.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

“Elena.”

I could not move.

Neither could she.

Then Mom took one step.

I took another.

And before we could reach each other—

A woman’s voice came from the darkness.

“No.”

Evelyn stepped between us.

She held a gun.

Not at me.

May you like

At my mother.

“You do not get your reunion yet.”
