Chapter 14 - My Father Chose Her

The Vale board meeting began at nine.
By nine-ten, my father betrayed me.
Evelyn did not appear in person.
Her attorney represented her.
Twelve directors sat around the table.
Mara waited outside.
Sophie watched from another building through an encrypted feed.
I sat beside Victor.
He would not look at me.
The vote was simple.
Remove Victor Vale as chairman.
Install Evelyn Vale as interim chairwoman.
I expected him to fight.
He did not.
When his name was called, my father said:
“I vote in favor.”
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I stared at him.
“What did you say?”
He kept his eyes forward.
“In favor.”
The motion passed.
Seven to five.
Evelyn Vale controlled the company.
The attorney smiled.
“Effective immediately, all executive access credentials belonging to Victor Vale are suspended.”
Then he looked at me.
“And Elena Vale.”
My phone lost network access.
My company badge died.
Every security authorization vanished.
My father had handed Evelyn the keys.
I stood.
“You chose her.”
Victor looked at me.
“No.”
“You knew what this vote meant.”
“Yes.”
“And you did it.”
“Elena.”
I stepped away.
“Do not explain it with love.”
His face broke.
“You were threatened.”
“So was Mom.”
“I could not gamble with your life.”
“You already did.”
I walked out.
Mara followed me.
“Something’s wrong.”
“My father just gave a criminal control of one of the largest security companies in the country.”
“Yes.”
She looked back toward the room.
“And he did it too easily.”
I stopped.
“You think it was intentional?”
“I think Victor Vale spent forty years surviving powerful people.”
Mara lowered her voice.
“I don’t believe he surrendered without a reason.”
My phone rang.
Unknown.
I answered.
Evelyn.
“Congratulations.”
“You won.”
“No.”
Her voice was amused.
“I survived.”
“Where is my mother?”
“With Celeste.”
“You know where?”
“Yes.”
“Tell me.”
“Why?”
“Because you claim you cared about her.”
“I did.”
“Past tense?”
A pause.
“Isabella and I stopped wanting the same thing.”
“She wants Orion destroyed.”
“Yes.”
“And you want it released.”
“Truth should not belong to billionaires, governments, or families.”
“You would destroy innocent people too.”
“Every revolution has collateral damage.”
There it was.
Not madness.
Conviction.
More dangerous.
“You threatened me to control my father.”
“I reminded Victor what he values.”
“You used me.”
“Everyone uses what people love.”
I looked through the glass toward Dad.
He was still seated.
Watching me.
“What happens now?”
“Vale servers come online under my authority at eleven tonight.”
“One hour before Celeste’s deadline.”
“Yes.”
“You planned that.”
“Of course.”
“What happens at eleven?”
Evelyn’s voice became almost tender.
“The world learns what Crosswell has hidden for thirty years.”
“And Mom?”
“If she survives Celeste, she will hate me.”
“Does that bother you?”
Silence.
Then:
“More than you know.”
She ended the call.
At noon, federal officers entered Vale headquarters.
Not Mara’s team.
Internal Affairs.
They arrested Mara Quinn.
Charges:
Evidence tampering.
Illegal surveillance.
Obstruction.
Her entire investigation was suspended.
Judge Rennick had signed the warrant.
One of the names in Orion.
Mara looked at me while they handcuffed her.
“Do not trust the federal chain.”
Then they took her away.
By three, news channels reported that I had illegally imprisoned hundreds of guests at Halcyon Estate.
By four, footage of my confrontation with Damian appeared online.
Edited.
My words removed.
His attack missing.
I looked like a hysterical heiress threatening terrified guests.
By six, Senator Hale issued no statement.
Because someone had transferred him from the hospital.
Nobody knew where.
At seven, Claire called.
“Damian is gone.”
“What do you mean?”
“My mother took him.”
At eight, Sophie disappeared.
At nine, Marcus Reed was shot at a traffic light and rushed into surgery.
And at ten-fifteen, police arrived at my apartment.
They had a warrant.
For my arrest.
The alleged crime was not related to the gala.
It was murder.
Daniel Webb’s murder.
The motel security system showed one person entering his room thirty minutes before he died.
Me.
A perfect digital image.
Perfectly fabricated.
Orion was no longer merely hiding crimes.
Someone had begun using it against me.

And at eleven o’clock—
Evelyn Vale would control the system that could manufacture almost any truth she wanted.
