CHAPTER 12 — THE SON THEY ERASED

The steel doors slammed shut.

The sound echoed through the underground facility like a verdict.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

I could still hear that voice.

A child's voice.

Soft.

Afraid.

Calling one word.

Daddy.

My mind rejected it.

It couldn't be real.

Lily was standing beside Emily.

My daughter was safe.

So whose voice had I heard?

I looked at Richard.

He was smiling.

Not the smile of a man who had won.

The smile of a man who had been waiting years for this exact moment.

"Open the doors."

I lunged toward him.

"Where is my son?"

Richard didn't move.

"Open the doors!"

"You finally remember him."

"Where is he?"

"Closer than you think."

I grabbed Richard by the collar.

"Tell me where he is."

Two armed men raised their weapons.

Sarah shouted:

"Ryan, stop!"

I didn't care.

Richard looked directly into my eyes.

"You always were emotional."

"You took my child."

"No."

He shook his head.

"Your father did."

I froze.

"What?"

Richard pushed my hands away.

"Your father made the decision."

"You're lying."

"Am I?"

He turned toward the wall.

A screen illuminated.

An old video began playing.

A hospital room.

I recognized it immediately.

The same room from my fragmented memories.

My father stood beside a bed.

Emily was lying unconscious.

She looked younger.

Exhausted.

There was blood on her hospital gown.

A nurse held a newborn.

A tiny boy.

My father looked at the baby.

Then at another man standing in the corner.

Richard.

The video continued.

My father's voice was barely audible.

"He cannot stay here."

Richard answered:

"Then give him to me."

"No."

"You know what happens if you refuse."

My father looked toward Emily.

Then toward me.

I was sitting beside the bed.

Young.

Confused.

Terrified.

Richard stepped closer.

"Ryan is already remembering."

My father looked at me.

"He doesn't know anything."

"He will."

"What do you want?"

"The boy."

My father shook his head.

"You'll never touch him."

Richard smiled.

"Then your son dies with the rest."

The video ended.

I stood motionless.

"No."

Emily was crying.

I turned toward her.

"You knew."

She couldn't look at me.

"You knew he was alive."

She whispered:

"I thought he was dead."

"That's not what Richard said."

"I believed he was."

"When did you last see him?"

Emily closed her eyes.

"Four years ago."

I felt my chest tighten.

"What happened?"

"He was taken."

"By Richard?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Then who?"

"Your father."

I stared at her.

"My father took my son?"

"He thought he was saving him."

"Where did he take him?"

"I don't know."

Sarah stepped forward.

"I do."

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward the screen.

"Your father didn't give the boy to Richard."

"Then where?"

"Another facility."

"Where?"

"Northstar."

My stomach dropped.

"Northstar was shut down."

"Officially."

I looked at Richard.

"Where is Northstar?"

He smiled.

"You've already been there."

I frowned.

"No."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Your childhood home."

I felt a chill.

The house where I had grown up.

The basement.

The locked room.

The room my father had forbidden me to enter.

The place I had always believed contained old documents.

I suddenly remembered a door.

A metal door.

Behind it...

a nursery.

I staggered backward.

"No."

Sarah grabbed my arm.

"You remember."

I closed my eyes.

A memory surfaced.

I was nine years old.

Standing outside a locked door.

I could hear a baby crying.

I put my ear against the wood.

Someone pulled me away.

My father.

He was furious.

"What are you doing here?"

"Who's crying?"

"No one."

"There's a baby."

My father knelt.

"Ryan, listen to me."

He placed both hands on my shoulders.

"You never come down here again."

"Why?"

"Because there's nothing for you here."

Then he said something I had forgotten.

"Some things are safer when they're forgotten."

I opened my eyes.

"The baby."

Sarah nodded.

"Your son."

I looked at Emily.

"How old was he?"

"Four."

"Four years ago."

"Yes."

"And Lily?"

"She was born a few months earlier."

I stared at both children.

My daughter and son.

Separated.

Hidden.

Erased.

My family had been destroyed by secrets before I even understood what secrets were.

Then a monitor flickered.

A live camera feed appeared.

A small room.

White walls.

A bed.

A little boy sat on the floor.

He was holding a stuffed rabbit.

I stopped breathing.

The boy looked about four years old.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A small scar above his eyebrow.

He looked like me.

He looked like Lily.

He looked like my childhood photographs.

"That's him."

Emily covered her mouth.

"Daniel."

The name came out as a whisper.

I stared at the screen.

"Daniel."

The boy lifted his head.

As if he had heard me.

He looked directly at the camera.

Then he whispered:

"Daddy?"

My knees nearly gave out.

I walked toward the screen.

"Daniel."

The boy stood.

He approached the camera.

His hand touched the glass.

I placed my hand against the screen.

"I've got you."

The boy smiled.

A tiny smile.

One I had never seen before.

But somehow recognized.

Then the image changed.

Richard appeared on the screen.

"You wanted your son."

I turned toward him.

"Bring him here."

"No."

"Then I'll come to him."

"You can't."

"Try me."

Richard shook his head.

"Because Daniel isn't just your son."

I stared.

"What does that mean?"

"He's the only person alive who remembers the original Project Echo facility."

Sarah whispered:

"That's why they kept him."

Richard nodded.

"He was three years old when he witnessed the transfer."

"What transfer?"

"The transfer of the original memory archive."

I frowned.

"Where?"

Richard smiled.

"Into him."

The room went silent.

"What?"

Emily stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

"Not according to your father."

I stared at the screen.

Richard continued:

"Daniel was exposed to the memory protocol before his brain fully developed."

"You experimented on my son."

"No."

"You used him."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because children don't forget the way adults do."

I felt sick.

"He's four."

"Exactly."

"He's a child."

"He's a living archive."

I wanted to kill him.

But Lily was beside Emily.

I couldn't risk anything.

I took a breath.

"Release him."

"No."

"What do you want?"

"The vault."

"You already know where it is."

"I need what is inside."

"What?"

"The original Echo key."

I looked at Anna.

She was staring at the floor.

"Anna?"

She didn't answer.

"What is he talking about?"

She finally looked up.

"Your father left something behind."

"What?"

"The master sequence."

"What does it do?"

"Undo the memory suppression."

I stared.

"Everyone who was altered could potentially remember."

"Yes."

"Everyone?"

"Every subject."

I looked at Richard.

"That's why you want it."

"Yes."

"To erase the evidence."

"No."

He smiled.

"To control it."

I understood.

If Richard possessed the master sequence, he could manipulate anyone connected to Project Echo.

Governments.

Business leaders.

Witnesses.

Victims.

Entire families.

He wouldn't need money.

He would have something more valuable.

Control.

"Where is it?"

Richard looked at Anna.

"Ask your sister."

I turned.

Anna was crying.

"I don't have it."

"Yes, you do."

"No."

"Your father gave it to you."

She shook her head.

"I don't remember."

Richard laughed.

"That's the irony."

"What?"

"She can't remember because she was the first person you used the master sequence on."

Anna looked horrified.

"That's why I couldn't remember."

I stared at her.

"What?"

"My memories..."

She touched her temple.

"Your father erased them."

"Why?"

"Because I knew where he hid it."

"Where?"

She looked at me.

"In you."

I froze.

"What?"

"The master sequence isn't an object."

"Then what is it?"

"A memory."

I stared.

"Your father stored it inside the one person Richard could never fully control."

"Me."

Anna nodded.

"Yes."

I remembered the treatment.

The machines.

The bright light.

My father's face.

He wasn't erasing my memories.

He was hiding one.

The master sequence.

Inside me.

I touched my head.

"How do I access it?"

Anna shook her head.

"We don't know."

Richard smiled.

"I do."

I looked at him.

"How?"

"Your son."

I felt cold.

"Daniel?"

"Daniel can unlock your memory."

"How?"

"Because he inherited the same neural pattern."

Emily whispered:

"No."

Richard looked at her.

"Yes."

She stepped toward him.

"You promised me he would never be used again."

"I promised nothing."

"You said—"

"I lied."

Emily raised her gun.

Richard's guards aimed at her.

I stepped between them.

"Nobody shoots."

Richard laughed.

"You still think you're in control."

"No."

I looked at him.

"But I'm going to get my son."

Richard nodded toward the screen.

"Then come and take him."

The screen went black.

A door opened behind us.

One of Richard's men pointed toward it.

"Go."

I looked at Emily.

"Stay with Lily."

"No."

"I'm going."

"We're going together."

"Emily."

"I'm not losing another child."

Her voice broke.

"I already lost four years with Lily."

She looked at Daniel's empty screen.

"I'm not losing him too."

I nodded.

"Fine."

Sarah stepped forward.

"I'm coming."

Anna followed.

"So am I."

Vanessa stood behind them.

"I'll stay with Lily."

I looked at her.

"Keep her safe."

"I will."

"Whatever happens."

"I swear."

I knelt in front of Lily.

She looked frightened.

"Daddy?"

"I'm going to get your brother."

She looked confused.

"Daniel?"

I froze.

"You know him?"

She nodded.

"He's my brother."

Emily covered her mouth.

I stared at Lily.

"How do you know?"

"He talks to me."

"How?"

"When I sleep."

A chill ran through me.

"What does he say?"

"That he's waiting."

"Where?"

She pointed toward the floor.

"Under the house."

I stared.

"Our house?"

She nodded.

"There's a room under the kitchen."

My heart stopped.

The hidden room.

The one I'd never found.

"How do you know?"

"Daniel showed me."

"How?"

She shrugged.

"He said we're connected."

I looked at Emily.

She was crying.

"Ryan..."

I stood.

"We're going home."

We left the facility through a service tunnel.

Michael stayed behind to disable the security system.

Vanessa took Lily.

Emily, Sarah, Anna, and I returned to the house.

The place looked different now.

Every wall seemed to contain a secret.

Every floorboard felt like it was hiding a memory.

I went straight to the kitchen.

The same kitchen where I had found Lily being abused.

The same floor where Vanessa had dragged her toward the dog bowl.

I looked at the tiles.

"Where?"

Lily pointed.

"Here."

I removed the rug.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a tiny crack.

A square outline.

I pressed it.

The floor clicked.

A section opened.

A staircase descended.

Emily whispered:

"I never knew."

Neither did I.

We went down.

The air became colder.

At the bottom was a hallway.

At the end...

a glass door.

Behind it was a room filled with monitors.

And on the largest screen...

Daniel.

He was asleep.

I ran toward the glass.

"Daniel!"

His eyes opened.

He looked directly at me.

"Daddy."

I put my hand against the glass.

"You're safe."

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"He's coming."

"Who?"

Daniel pointed behind me.

I turned.

Nobody.

Then the lights went out.

A voice came through the speakers.

"Welcome home, Ryan."

Richard.

I reached for the door.

Locked.

Emily fired at the electronic panel.

Nothing.

Sarah shouted:

"Don't!"

"What?"

"The room is sealed."

"How do we open it?"

"Memory."

I looked at her.

"What?"

"Your father designed it."

"How?"

"Your memory opens the door."

I closed my eyes.

I tried to remember.

The hospital.

The nursery.

The treatment.

The little boy.

My father.

A phrase surfaced.

Blue door. Three knocks.

I opened my eyes.

I knocked three times.

Nothing.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Red."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Touch the red light."

I saw a tiny red sensor.

I placed my hand on it.

The door unlocked.

I pulled it open.

Daniel ran into my arms.

I caught him.

He wrapped his arms around my neck.

"Daddy."

I held him so tightly I could barely breathe.

"I'm sorry."

He whispered:

"I waited."

I closed my eyes.

"I know."

"I knew you'd come."

"How?"

"Mommy told me."

I looked at Emily.

She was crying.

Daniel looked at her.

"Mommy."

Emily dropped to her knees.

Daniel ran into her arms.

She held him like she was afraid he would disappear.

"I thought you were gone."

Daniel whispered:

"I wasn't."

Then Lily came running down the stairs.

"Daniel!"

He turned.

"Lily!"

The two children hugged.

They were almost the same height.

Their faces were nearly identical.

I watched them together.

For the first time, my family looked complete.

Then Daniel stepped away.

"Daddy."

"Yes?"

"We have to leave."

"Why?"

"Because the bad man is coming."

I looked around.

"What bad man?"

Daniel pointed toward the ceiling.

"Not Richard."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

Daniel whispered:

"The man who looks like you."

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Michael.

My cousin.

The man with the blue ring.

The man who had disappeared.

But Daniel shook his head.

"Not Michael."

"Then who?"

Daniel looked terrified.

"Your brother."

I stared.

"I don't have another brother."

Daniel pointed toward the mirror.

I looked.

For a second, I saw my reflection.

Then another reflection appeared behind it.

A man.

Same height.

Same face.

Same eyes.

My face.

I turned.

Nobody.

I looked back.

The reflection was gone.

Emily whispered:

"Ryan..."

"What?"

"Your father had another son."

I stared at her.

"Who?"

She looked at Daniel.

"Daniel."

I frowned.

"No."

Emily shook her head.

"Not our Daniel."

I felt cold.

"Then who?"

"The other one."

"What other one?"

She whispered:

"The first Daniel."

My mind went blank.

Sarah stepped closer.

"The boy in the original photograph."

I remembered.

The two babies.

The boy Richard had taken.

But there were two boys?

No.

One was my son.

The other...

was me.

I suddenly understood.

Project Echo hadn't created one copy.

It had created a genetic duplicate.

A child designed from my DNA.

A replacement.

A perfect copy.

And that child had grown up believing he was me.

I stared at the mirror.

The man who looked like me wasn't a ghost.

He was alive.

And he had been watching me.

Daniel suddenly screamed.

"He's here!"

The lights flickered.

The door behind us slammed shut.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

"Ryan."

I knew that voice.

It was mine.

"Open the door."

Emily raised her gun.

I moved Lily behind me.

Daniel clung to my leg.

The voice came again.

"Open the door, brother."

I stared at the steel entrance.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then:

"You."

The lights came back.

A figure stood behind the glass.

My face.

My height.

My eyes.

But there was something different.

A coldness I had never seen in myself.

He smiled.

"My name is Ryan Carter."

I froze.

"No."

He leaned toward the glass.

"And you're the copy."

I couldn't breathe.

Emily whispered:

"That's impossible."

The man smiled.

"That's what your father wanted everyone to believe."

Then he raised his hand.

On his finger was a blue ring.

And I realized the truth.

The man who had been hunting us wasn't Richard.

Richard was only the man behind the operation.

The real weapon...

was someone who looked exactly like me.

Someone who knew every memory I had lost.

Someone who knew every weakness I had.

Someone who had been created to replace me.

The duplicate looked directly at Lily.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Emily.

Finally, at me.

"You stole my life."

I shook my head.

"I don't know you."

"You will."

He smiled.

"Because soon..."

He touched the glass.

"...you'll remember everything I remember."

Then the entire facility began to shake.

A countdown appeared on the monitor.

00:09:59

Emily looked at me.

"What is that?"

I stared at the numbers.

"An evacuation countdown."

Sarah's face went white.

"No."

"What?"

She whispered:

"Richard is going to destroy the facility."

I looked at the children.

"Then we get them out."

Anna pointed toward another tunnel.

"There's an emergency exit."

We ran.

Behind us, alarms screamed.

The duplicate disappeared.

Richard's voice came over the speakers.

"Run, Ryan."

The countdown continued.

00:08:42.

We reached the tunnel.

Then the floor shook violently.

Daniel fell.

I grabbed him.

Lily grabbed my hand.

Emily held her.

Anna led the way.

Sarah followed.

We ran through the darkness.

Behind us came an explosion.

The ceiling cracked.

Dust filled the air.

"Keep moving!"

We reached a metal staircase.

At the top was daylight.

We climbed.

I pushed the door open.

We emerged into the forest.

For several seconds, everyone stood silently.

We were alive.

Daniel was alive.

Lily was alive.

Emily was alive.

Then a massive explosion shook the ground behind us.

The old house collapsed.

Fire rose into the sky.

I held both children against me.

Emily stood beside us.

Sarah watched the flames.

Anna whispered:

"It's over."

I looked at the burning building.

"No."

She turned.

"What?"

"Richard is still alive."

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a child's voice whispered:

"Daddy."

I froze.

Daniel looked at me.

"I didn't call you."

I put the phone on speaker.

The voice continued.

"You forgot one."

I felt a chill.

"Who are you?"

A little girl laughed softly.

Then she said:

"I'm your daughter."

I looked at Lily.

She was standing beside me.

My blood ran cold.

The voice whispered:

"Not Lily."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Emily grabbed my arm.

"What happened?"

I looked at her.

"There is another child."

Sarah's face changed.

Anna whispered:

"No."

"What?"

She looked toward the burning house.

"Ryan..."

"What?"

"The third subject."

I remembered my father's words.

You were not the first child.

You were not the second.

You were the third.

My heart stopped.

I had always thought he meant three experiments.

Three subjects.

But he hadn't.

He meant three children.

Me.

Daniel.

And someone else.

A girl.

Someone who was still alive.

Someone Richard had hidden from us.

Someone who had just called me...

Daddy.

I looked at the flames.

And for the first time, I understood the true purpose of Project Echo.

It wasn't designed to erase the past.

It was designed to create replacements.

And somewhere in the world...

there was a girl who had my face.

My blood.

My memories.

And perhaps...

my name.

The phone rang again.

This time, a woman's voice spoke.

"Ryan."

I knew it immediately.

Miriam Hale.

My biological mother.

But she was supposed to be dead.

Her voice whispered:

"Come find me."

Then the line went dead.

I looked at Emily.

She was trembling.

"Who was that?"

I swallowed.

"My mother."

Sarah stared at me.

"That's impossible."

"Apparently..."

I looked at the burning ruins.

"...nothing is impossible anymore."

Behind us, a car engine started.

We turned.

A black SUV was waiting on the road.

The driver's door opened.

Ethan stepped out.

My brother.

The man who had betrayed me.

He looked at me.

Then at the children.

Then at Emily.

Finally, he smiled.

"You finally found them."

I raised my gun.

"Ethan."

He didn't move.

"You want answers?"

"Yes."

"Then get in."

"Why would I trust you?"

"Because Richard isn't your biggest problem."

I tightened my grip.

"Who is?"

Ethan looked at Daniel.

Then Lily.

Then toward the burning house.

"The woman who just called you."

I stared.

"Miriam."

Ethan nodded.

"She's not dead."

He opened the SUV door.

"And she's been waiting for you for twenty-three years."

I looked at my children.

At Emily.

At Sarah.

At Anna.

Then at Ethan.

The past wasn't buried.

It had been waiting.

May you like

And now...

it was coming for all of us.
