CHAPTER 1 — THE RECORDING SHE THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER SEE

The screen on my phone went black for three seconds.
Vanessa didn't breathe.
Neither did I.
Lily was still pressed against my side, her tiny fingers gripping the fabric of my shirt so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
I stared at the security app.
Then the loading circle disappeared.
A timestamp appeared.
Tuesday — 7:14 A.M.
The footage showed my kitchen.
The same kitchen I had eaten breakfast in that morning.
The same kitchen where Vanessa had just dragged my four-year-old daughter across the floor.
Except this recording wasn't from today.
It was from three days earlier.
Vanessa walked into the frame.
She was carrying Lily's pink breakfast plate.
At first, everything looked normal.
Then Vanessa set the plate on the counter.
She looked directly toward the visible security camera.
She smiled.
A strange, deliberate smile.
Then she reached up and switched it off.
My jaw tightened.
I glanced at the small camera above the kitchen doorway.
Lily had been telling the truth.
Vanessa knew exactly where it was.
But she didn't know about mine.
The hidden camera continued recording.
Vanessa turned around.
Her smile disappeared.
"Lily."
My daughter's little head appeared from the hallway.
She was holding a stuffed rabbit.
Her favorite.
The one I had bought her after she started kindergarten.
Vanessa pointed toward the table.
"Sit."
Lily climbed into the chair.
Vanessa placed the plate in front of her.
"Eat."
Lily looked down.
There was cereal on the plate.
But something was wrong.
Even through the recording, I could see it.
Lily shook her head.
"I don't want that."
Vanessa leaned closer.
"You don't get to decide."
Lily pushed the plate away.
Vanessa grabbed her wrist.
Hard.
Lily immediately began crying.
"Daddy said I don't have to eat things I don't like."
I felt something burn inside my chest.
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Your daddy isn't here."
She pulled Lily out of the chair.
The footage jumped forward.
Another timestamp.
Tuesday — 7:26 A.M.
Lily was crying.
Vanessa was dragging her toward the laundry room.
I stopped the video.
My hand was shaking.
I looked down at my daughter.
She was staring at the floor.
"Lily."
She didn't answer.
"Sweetheart."
Slowly, she looked up.
"Did this happen?"
Her lower lip trembled.
She nodded.
"How many times?"
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"Ryan, she's confused."
I raised one hand.
"Don't."
Vanessa stopped.
I pressed play.
The next recording began.
Vanessa opened the laundry-room door.
It was a small room beside the garage.
No windows.
Barely enough space for the washer, dryer, and shelves.
She pushed Lily inside.
Lily screamed.
"Please!"
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
"You'll stay here until you learn."
"What did I do?"
"You know what you did."
"I don't!"
Vanessa closed the door.
The footage showed Lily sitting on the floor.
Crying.
Waiting.
Five minutes.
Ten.
Twenty.
Thirty.
No one came.
Then Lily began whispering.
"Daddy is coming."
She said it over and over.
"Daddy is coming."
My eyes burned.
I stopped the recording.
Vanessa spoke quietly.
"You don't understand."
I looked at her.
"I understand perfectly."
"No, you don't."
She wiped her face.
"I was overwhelmed."
"You locked a four-year-old in a windowless room."
"She wouldn't listen."
"She's four."
"You keep saying that like it excuses everything."
"It does."
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
Then she said something I never expected.
"You weren't supposed to come home today."
The room went silent.
I slowly lowered my phone.
"What?"
Vanessa realized what she'd said.
"I meant—"
"You weren't supposed to come home today."
She swallowed.
"I thought your flight was tomorrow."
"It was."
"Then why did you come home?"
I stared at her.
Because now I realized something.
I had changed my flight at the last minute.
I hadn't told anyone.
Not even Vanessa.
I had called my assistant that morning and asked him to move everything forward because I wanted to surprise Lily.
Nobody knew.
Nobody except...
My assistant.
The airline.
And Vanessa.
I looked at her.
"How did you know my original flight?"
She said nothing.
"Vanessa."
"I saw your itinerary."
"Where?"
"Your email."
I laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because suddenly the entire situation felt much bigger than a cruel stepmother losing her temper.
"You went through my email?"
She crossed her arms.
"We're married."
"That's not an answer."
"You hide things from me."
"What things?"
She didn't respond.
I stepped closer.
"What things, Vanessa?"
She looked away.
Then Lily tugged on my shirt.
"Daddy."
I turned.
She whispered.
"Don't make her mad."
I froze.
Vanessa looked at her.
Lily immediately lowered her eyes.
That tiny movement told me more than any recording could.
Fear.
Not temporary fear.
Familiar fear.
The kind a child learns.
I knelt in front of Lily.
"Baby, look at me."
She did.
"You didn't do anything wrong."
She started crying.
"I tried to be good."
"I know."
"I really tried."
"I know."
She climbed into my arms.
I held her.
Behind us, Vanessa remained completely silent.
I could feel her watching.
I stood up.
"We're leaving."
Her head snapped toward me.
"What?"
"You and I are done talking tonight."
"Ryan—"
"I'm taking Lily somewhere safe."
"You're not taking my daughter."
I turned slowly.
"Your daughter?"
Vanessa went pale.
She knew she had said too much.
I looked at Lily.
Then at Vanessa.
"She's my daughter."
Vanessa shook her head.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
"No."
I pointed toward the phone.
"You don't understand what I just found."
I opened the footage again.
But before I could play another clip, Vanessa lunged toward me.
I stepped back.
"Don't touch my phone."
"I need to explain."
"You've had months to explain."
"I can explain everything."
"Then explain this."
I held up the phone.
"Why did you turn off the visible camera before taking Lily to the laundry room?"
She stared at me.
No answer.
"Why?"
Nothing.
"Why did you know exactly where it was?"
Her eyes moved toward the ceiling.
Then back to me.
And I saw it.
A calculation.
She was thinking.
Not feeling.
Thinking.
How much did I know?
What had I seen?
What hadn't I seen?
I recognized that look.
I'd seen it in business negotiations.
The look of someone trying to determine how badly they were losing.
"Ryan..."
Her voice softened.
"I made mistakes."
"Those aren't mistakes."
"I was under pressure."
"That's not an excuse."
"I was scared."
"Of what?"
She stopped.
"What?"
"You're scared of what?"
Her mouth opened.
Then closed.
I waited.
Finally she whispered:
"You."
I stared at her.
"Me?"
"You weren't supposed to find out."
The words hung in the air.
My heart started pounding.
"Find out what?"
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"I can't tell you here."
"Why?"
"Because someone is listening."
My skin prickled.
I looked around the kitchen.
"Who?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"You have no idea what you've walked into."
I almost laughed.
"You tortured my daughter."
"I never hurt her."
I stared at her.
"The footage says otherwise."
"I didn't mean to hurt her."
"That distinction doesn't matter."
"It does."
"No."
"It does if you know why."
I stepped closer.
"Then tell me."
She hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Lily isn't the reason."
My stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Vanessa looked at the security camera.
Then toward the hallway.
Then back at me.
"They've been watching this house."
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
"Who has been watching?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Ryan..."
She took a breath.
"Your daughter is in danger."
I looked down at Lily.
She was still holding my shirt.
"What kind of danger?"
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"The kind that started before I ever met you."
I didn't respond.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then my phone vibrated.
One notification.
UNKNOWN NUMBER
I opened it.
There was no text.
Just a photograph.
My blood ran cold.
It was a picture of Lily.
Sleeping.
In her bedroom.
Taken from inside our house.
I looked at the timestamp.
Two nights ago.
I slowly raised my eyes toward Vanessa.
She was staring at my phone.
"You got one too," she whispered.
"What?"
She nodded toward the screen.
"They know you found the camera."
I felt Lily's arms tighten around my waist.
I immediately moved toward the front door.
"Ryan, wait."
I grabbed my keys.
"Where are you going?"
"Somewhere they can't reach her."
Vanessa followed.
"Don't take Lily outside."
I stopped.
"Why?"
"Because that's exactly what they want."
I turned around.
"What do they want?"
She looked terrified.
Then she said something that made my entire body go numb.
"They don't want Lily."
A pause.
"They want you."
Before I could respond, the lights in the house went out.
Everything went black.
Lily screamed.
I grabbed her instantly.
Vanessa gasped.
Then we heard it.
A sound from upstairs.
One slow footstep.
Then another.
Someone was walking through my house.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.
I held Lily against my chest.
Vanessa whispered:
"Ryan..."
I looked toward the staircase.
"Don't move."
Another step.
Closer.
Then my phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, only four words appeared.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED AWAY.
I stared at the screen.
Then I heard a door upstairs open.
And for the first time that night, I realized something terrifying.
May you like
The person who had been watching my daughter...
was already inside the house.
