CHAPTER 1 — THE KING’S WORD

For a moment, no one understood what had been said.
The chamber held its breath as if the world itself had paused to reconsider reality.
Lady Beatrice’s smile froze halfway between disbelief and outrage. “Your Majesty… I beg your pardon?”
King Adrian Valmont did not repeat himself.
He simply held the gown higher—carefully, almost reverently—before turning it slightly toward Elena. The crimson silk caught the chandelier light and burned like liquid fire.
“This gown,” he said, voice steady, “was never meant for Princess Celeste.”
A murmur erupted instantly.
“That’s impossible,” someone whispered. “It was commissioned for her coronation—”
“And yet,” the king interrupted, finally looking at them, “the truth does not require your permission to exist.”
Elena stood frozen.
Her heart hammered so violently she thought the entire room could hear it. Her mind struggled to catch up with what was happening. The king was speaking about her… as if she mattered. As if she belonged in the same sentence as that impossible gown.
Lady Beatrice stepped forward. “Sire, this girl is a nobody from the outer villages. She is—”
“Enough.”
One word.
Sharp. Final.
The chamber trembled into silence again.
King Adrian lowered the gown slightly, then turned fully toward Elena.
“What is your full name?” he asked.
“Elena… Elena Ashford,” she answered hesitantly.
At that, something shifted in his expression—subtle, but unmistakable.
Like a door inside his memory had just been unlocked.
He repeated it softly. “Ashford…”
The nobles exchanged uneasy glances.
That name did not belong in the palace.
Or rather—it had not been spoken within its walls for sixteen years.
The king exhaled slowly.
“Everyone out,” he ordered.
May you like
No one dared question him.
Within seconds, the Royal Gown Chamber emptied, leaving only the king, Elena, and the gown that seemed suddenly heavier with meaning than silk or gold.
