One week later.
Lena was still behind her hotdog stand. Same cold mornings. Same rushing crowd. Same exhausted routine.
But something had changed.
A black SUV stopped by the curb again.
No rush this time.
The door opened.
Evelyn stepped out.
This time she wore a warm coat, her hair neat, her face healthier.
She ran straight to Lena.
“Auntie Lena!”
Lena froze, then smiled.
“You’re not supposed to run around like that.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I came to repay you.”
She handed Lena an envelope.
Lena laughed softly.
“You don’t need to—”
But when she opened it, she froze.
Inside wasn’t coins.
It was a check.
A number that could change her entire life.
And a small note:
“Thank you for giving my daughter a meal when the world turned away.
— A father”
Lena stood silently for a long time.
The wind moved through the street.
The city noise continued as always.
But for the first time, she didn’t feel invisible.
Evelyn took her hand.
“Lena,” the girl said softly, “you’re not alone anymore.”
Lena looked at her… then at the street that had once drained her life.
And for the first time, it didn’t feel the same.
She nodded gently.
“Yeah… I think you’re right.”
