CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE LOOSE CHANGE
“It’s not what you think!” Evelyn cried, grabbing Lena’s hand like it was the only safe place in the world.
The man stepped forward.
“She’s been missing for two days. Her mother is going insane looking for her.”
Lena looked down at the child.
Two days.
A six-year-old girl alone in New York for two days…
And no one noticed.
Only a poor street vendor did.
“I didn’t run away…” Evelyn shook her head. “I just wanted to buy food myself… I didn’t want to be a burden…”
Those words hit Lena hard.
The father lowered his voice.
“She took money from her mother’s wallet… then disappeared. We’ve searched everywhere.”
Evelyn looked down, tears falling quietly.
“I only had a few coins…” she whispered. “I thought it would be enough…”
Lena remembered the pennies, nickels, and dimes.
A child’s entire world of value.
And the price of survival.
Lena turned slightly away, hiding her emotions.
“She did nothing wrong,” she said softly.
The father looked at her.
“You fed her?”
“Yes.”
A long silence followed.
Then he bowed his head.
