CHAPTER 2: THE ENVELOPE

Richard frowned at the white envelope.
“What’s that?”
Clara looked at him calmly.
“Your freedom.”
For a moment, Richard laughed.
Then she slid the envelope across the table.
Inside were divorce papers.
The smile disappeared from his face.
“You’re joking.”
“No.”
Richard stared at her.
“You’re six months pregnant.”
“I know.”
“You need me.”
Clara almost smiled.
That sentence told her everything.
Not "I need you."
Not "I love you."
Only that she needed him.
Richard tossed the papers onto the table.
“This is because of some stupid suspicion?”
Clara reached for a second folder.
Bank statements.
Wire transfers.
Property deeds.
Photographs.
And Sabrina Cole's name highlighted in yellow.
The color drained from Richard's face.
“You went through my records?”
“I went looking for the husband I married.”
Silence.
Then Clara placed one final document before him.
An investigation report from her attorney.
The Donovan Foundation had funded gifts, rent payments, and luxury expenses connected to Sabrina.
Richard's hands trembled.
“This isn't what it looks like.”
“It never is.”
For the first time that night, Richard looked afraid.

But Clara felt nothing.
The woman who had waited for him was already gone.
