Chapter 5 — Justice

Vanessa's trial lasted three weeks.
Doctors testified about my mother's injuries.
The paramedics described what they had witnessed.
The forensic specialists authenticated every second of the hidden surveillance footage.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
Vanessa was found guilty of elder abuse, assault causing bodily harm, unlawful confinement, attempted financial exploitation, and conspiracy.
She received a lengthy prison sentence.
Richard Hale was sentenced for corporate fraud and money laundering.
Vanessa's brother was ordered to repay millions in stolen assets.
Everything they had worked for collapsed in a single afternoon.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded me.
One asked if I hated my ex-wife.
I paused before answering.
"Hate would mean she still controls part of my life."
"She doesn't."
"I choose peace."
Months later, every stolen family possession had been returned.
