Chapter 2 — The Blue Sewing Box

The first recording lasted only seven minutes.

It was enough to destroy everything I thought I knew about my marriage.

Vanessa wasn't caring for my mother.

She was interrogating her.

"Where is it?" Vanessa demanded as she yanked my mother's wheelchair away from the dining table.

"I don't remember."

"You've been saying that for weeks."

My mother lowered her head.

"I truly don't."

Vanessa slammed her hand against the table.

"Liar."

The video ended with Elena quietly helping my mother back into her wheelchair after Vanessa stormed upstairs.

I opened the second recording.

Then the third.

Then another.

Day after day, the same question echoed through the house.

"Where is it?"

It had never been about caring for my mother.

Vanessa had been searching for something.

The next morning, I returned to the house with Detective Harris.

Inside the blue sewing box were dozens of old photographs, handwritten letters from my late father, and a sealed envelope addressed to me.

My mother's hands trembled as she watched me break the seal.

Inside was a notarized document.

My father had quietly purchased forty percent of the engineering company I now managed.

The shares had been placed into a family trust years before his death.

No one outside our family was supposed to know.

Except someone did.

Vanessa.

Detective Harris looked at me.

"This wasn't random abuse."

"It was financial coercion."

As officers searched the house, another surprise surfaced.

Thousands of dollars in jewelry, cash, and family heirlooms had disappeared.

Security footage showed boxes leaving the garage in the middle of the night.

They weren't going to a storage unit.

They were being delivered to someone else.

Someone Vanessa trusted more than her husband.

May you like

Her younger brother.

The investigation had just begun.
