Chapter 2: A Debt That Could Never Be Repaid
The next morning, Emma expected to be unemployed.
Instead, she found a black luxury sedan waiting outside her apartment.
Two men in tailored suits stepped out.
"Miss Carter?"
She nodded cautiously.
"Mr. Moretti would like to speak with you."
Emma almost refused.
Instead, curiosity won.
The car carried her to the Moretti estate.
It wasn't a mansion.
It was practically a palace.
Inside, Isabella greeted her with a warm smile.
"You remind me of someone."
Emma smiled politely.
"My father always taught me to help people."
Isabella's expression softened.
"He raised you well."
A few minutes later, Vincent entered.
He placed a folder on the table.
"I investigated your situation."
Emma stiffened.
"You... investigated me?"
"I investigate everyone who saves my family."
Inside the folder were copies of hospital bills.
Mortgage statements.
Her father's medical records.
Even her sister's tuition balance.
Emma felt exposed.
"I didn't help your mother for money."
"I know."
"Then why am I here?"
Vincent slid another document toward her.
"A job."
She blinked.
"What kind of job?"
"My mother's personal assistant."
Emma almost laughed.
"I've never done anything like that."
"My mother doesn't need experience."
Isabella smiled.
"She needs kindness."
The salary printed on the contract was almost four times Emma's current income.
Enough to save her father.
Enough to erase years of debt.
Emma looked at Vincent.
"Why would you trust a stranger?"
He answered without hesitation.
"Because everyone else in that ballroom looked away."
"You didn't."
Emma accepted.
