CHAPTER 13 — THE NIGHT THE STERLING WENT TO WAR

Richard Sterling had always believed fear was a weakness.
A weakness his enemies could exploit.
A weakness that clouded judgment.
A weakness that made people act before thinking.
That was why he trained himself to stay calm.
In negotiations.
In crises.
In moments when everyone around him panicked.
But there was one situation where calm became almost impossible.
When someone threatened his child.
The photograph remained on his phone.
Sophie sleeping.
Taken inside her bedroom.
Richard stared at it for several seconds.
Then he did something he had never done before.
He allowed himself to feel fear.
Not for himself.
Not for his company.
Not for his reputation.
For her.
Because Sophie was not a billionaire’s daughter.
She was not an heir.
She was not the key to a fortune.
She was a six-year-old girl who still believed monsters disappeared when the lights turned on.
And someone had just proven that some monsters lived among people.
Richard moved through the mansion quickly.
“Marcus.”
The security chief appeared immediately.
“Yes, sir.”
“Lock everything down.”
Marcus noticed his expression.
“What happened?”
Richard showed him the phone.
Marcus went silent.
The photograph.
The message.
The threat.
For the first time in twelve years working for Richard, Marcus looked genuinely angry.
“They were inside.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then someone helped them.”
“Yes.”
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
“Sophie?”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“No one gets near her.”
Within fifteen minutes, the entire security system changed.
New access codes.
New guards.
Every employee temporarily restricted.
Every camera reviewed.
Every device scanned.
The mansion transformed from a home into a fortress.
But Richard knew something.
Walls did not stop people who already knew how to enter.
And someone had been entering for months.
Sophie woke up because of the activity.
She walked into the hallway holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?”
Richard turned immediately.
His face softened.
Everything else disappeared.
He walked over and knelt.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
“Why are there so many people?”
Richard looked at her.
He could lie.
Many parents would.
They would say everything was fine.
They would hide the fear.
But Richard had learned something.
Children always know when adults are pretending.
“We’re making the house safer.”
Sophie looked around.
“Because of Vanessa?”
Richard hesitated.
“Because some people make bad choices.”
Sophie hugged her rabbit.
“Are you mad?”
“No.”
“Are you scared?”
Richard paused.
The honest answer surprised her.
“Yes.”
Sophie looked at him.
“You are?”
Richard smiled slightly.
“Sometimes being scared means you understand how important something is.”
She thought about that.
Then whispered:
“Am I important?”
Richard felt his chest tighten.
“You are the most important person in my life.”
That night, Richard made a decision.
He would not run.
He would not hide Sophie away.
Because whoever was behind this wanted fear.
They wanted him reacting.
They wanted him making mistakes.
Instead, he would do what he did best.
He would investigate.
He would prepare.
And he would strike first.
At midnight, Richard called a private meeting.
The people in the room were the only ones he trusted.
Marcus.
Ethan.
Olivia.
Daniel.
And unexpectedly…
Nathan.
Richard looked at his half-brother.
For weeks, Nathan had been a mystery.
A person connected to pain.
A person connected to secrets.
But now he was sitting at the table.
Helping protect Sophie.
That mattered.
“Before we begin,” Richard said, “there are no more secrets.”
Everyone looked at him.
“No more half-truths.”
His eyes moved from person to person.
“If you know something, you say it.”
Nobody argued.
Because everyone understood.
The time for protecting the past was over.
Ethan placed documents on the table.
“We traced the Crown Circle.”
Richard looked up.
“And?”
“They are real.”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“They have existed for decades.”
Richard glanced at him.
“You knew?”
Daniel sighed.
“I knew of them.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Again.”
Daniel looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
Richard accepted the apology.
But he did not forget.
“Continue.”
Ethan pointed to the documents.
“The Crown Circle is not a company.”
“What is it?”
“A network.”
“How many members?”
“We don’t know exactly.”
Richard frowned.
“Meaning?”
“They operate through shell companies, trusts, and private agreements.”
Olivia spoke.
“They influence industries.”
“Which industries?”
“Finance.”
“Politics.”
“Real estate.”
“Technology.”
Richard looked at the documents.
“And Sterling Global?”
Ethan nodded.
“One of their biggest assets.”
Nathan spoke for the first time.
“They don't care about the company.”
Everyone looked at him.
Richard asked:
“What do they care about?”
Nathan answered:
“Control.”
Silence.
“They don’t need to own everything.”
Nathan continued.
“They need to decide who owns it.”
Richard understood.
The inheritance.
Sophie.
The trust.
The child.
Everything made sense.
“If Sophie inherits control…”
“They lose control.”
Nathan nodded.
“That’s why they waited.”
Richard looked at him.
“Waited for what?”
Nathan looked toward the hallway.
“For the moment when the heir became legally protected.”
Richard frowned.
“Why now?”
Olivia answered quietly.
“Because Sophie turns seven next month.”
Richard felt cold.
The same number.
The same timeline.
Everyone had been waiting for that birthday.
Daniel suddenly stood.
“There is something you need to know.”
Richard looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then removed an old envelope from his briefcase.
“I kept this because Eleanor ordered me to.”
Richard stared.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
Daniel placed it on the table.
“Her final instructions.”
Richard opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The first sentence immediately made him stop.
Richard, if you are reading this, then they have found Sophie.
His hands tightened.
He continued.
I prayed you would never need this information.
But if the Crown Circle reaches her, you must understand one thing.
They are not afraid of Sophie because she is powerful.
They are afraid because she represents the one thing they cannot control.
Richard read faster.
Then the final paragraph.
The Sterling fortune was never meant to belong to the strongest person.
It was meant to belong to the person who could walk away from it.
Richard stared.
A person who could walk away.
Sophie.
A child who cared more about drawing pictures than money.
Before anyone could speak, every light in the mansion went out.
The room went dark.
Marcus immediately stood.
“Power failure.”
“No,” Richard said.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Someone cut it.”
A second later, alarms began.
Then Marcus’s radio crackled.
“Movement detected near the east wing.”
Richard’s face changed.
“The bedrooms.”
Everyone moved.
Fast.
But Richard was already running.
The hallway was dark.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Richard reached Sophie’s room.
The door was open.
His heart stopped.
“Sophie!”
No answer.
He rushed inside.
The room was empty.
The bed was untouched.
The window was open.
Cold air moved the curtains.
Richard froze.
Then he saw something on the pillow.
A note.
His hands shook as he picked it up.
Three words.
SHE KNOWS NOW.
Richard turned the paper over.
On the back was another sentence.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT YOUR DAUGHTER BACK.
The room became silent.
Everyone behind him stopped.
Because they all understood.
Someone had taken Sophie.
And whoever did it knew exactly how to hurt Richard Sterling.
They did not attack his company.
They did not attack his fortune.
They took the only thing he could never replace.
His daughter.
Richard looked at the note.
Then at the empty bed.
For the first time in his life...
May you like
Richard Sterling was no longer fighting for his empire.
He was fighting for his child.
