CHAPTER 12 — THE ASSISTANT WHO CARRIED A SECRET

Richard Sterling had built his entire life around one belief:
Trust had to be earned.
Not given.
Not assumed.
Earned.
Yet somehow, over the past few weeks, every person he trusted had become connected to the darkest chapter of his family’s history.
Vanessa.
Edward.
Victor.
Nathan.
And now Olivia.
The woman who had helped him uncover the truth.
The woman who had stood beside him when everyone else seemed to be hiding.
The woman whose name now appeared on the security report.
Accessing confidential Sterling family files.
Inside his home.
After midnight.
Richard stared at the screen.
His first instinct was anger.
His second instinct was disbelief.
Because Olivia Grant was not just an employee.
She was the person who had helped him survive the chaos after his wife’s death.
She had organized his life.
Protected his schedule.
Managed every detail he forgot.
She knew his business.
She knew his family.
She knew Sophie.
And that was exactly why the suspicion hurt.
Richard did not confront her immediately.
That was the difference between emotion and strategy.
A younger version of himself would have demanded answers.
He would have walked into her office.
Placed the evidence down.
Forced a confession.
But years of business battles had taught him something.
Never reveal what you know until you understand what the other person knows.
So Richard waited.
He watched.
And he observed.
The next morning, Olivia arrived at the mansion as usual.
A coffee in one hand.
A tablet in the other.
Her expression was calm.
Normal.
Almost too normal.
“Good morning, Richard.”
He studied her.
“Morning.”
She smiled.
“You look exhausted.”
“I didn’t sleep much.”
“Because of everything happening?”
“Yes.”
She nodded sympathetically.
“I’m sorry.”
Those words bothered him.
Not because they were wrong.
Because they sounded rehearsed.
Richard had spent years reading people.
A person’s face.
Their posture.
Their timing.
Olivia was hiding something.
He was certain.
The question was:
Was she hiding something dangerous?
Or something that could explain everything?
“Olivia.”
“Yes?”
“Do you know anything about the Sterling family trust?”
The smallest reaction appeared.
A brief pause.
Less than a second.
But Richard saw it.
“No.”
A simple answer.
Too simple.
Richard nodded.
“Interesting.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I never told you about it.”
Silence.
The air changed.
Olivia realized her mistake.
Richard watched carefully.
“I assumed you knew.”
She recovered quickly.
“Daniel Whitmore mentioned legal issues.”
Richard leaned back.
“When?”
Olivia looked away.
“Recently.”
Another lie.
Richard felt it.
After Olivia left the room, Richard called Ethan.
“I want everything on Olivia Grant.”
Ethan answered immediately.
“I thought we already did.”
“We didn’t go deep enough.”
A pause.
“What changed?”
Richard looked through the window.
“Everyone has a story.”
“Olivia too?”
“Yes.”
“And you think hers matters?”
Richard remembered the message.
Ask Olivia why she really came to work for you.
“Yes.”
The investigation began quietly.
At first, nothing appeared.
Olivia Grant was exactly who she claimed to be.
Excellent education.
Clean background.
No criminal record.
No suspicious financial activity.
No obvious connections.
Richard almost believed he had been wrong.
Almost.
Then Ethan found something.
“Richard.”
“What?”
“We found the original employment application.”
Richard frowned.
“Original?”
“Yes.”
“But we already have it.”
“No.”
Ethan’s voice changed.
“The one in your system was modified.”
Richard sat up.
“What was changed?”
“One section.”
“Which one?”
Ethan answered:
“Emergency contact.”
Richard felt cold.
“Who was listed originally?”
A pause.
Then:
“Eleanor Sterling.”
Richard froze.
His mother.
“That’s impossible.”
Ethan was silent.
“Richard.”
“My mother died eight years ago.”
“Yes.”
“So how could she be Olivia’s emergency contact?”
Ethan answered:
“Because Olivia was hired fifteen years ago.”
Richard stopped.
Fifteen years.
Before his mother died.
Before he became CEO.
Before he knew Olivia well.
“What else?”
Ethan continued.
“Olivia’s legal name was not originally Olivia Grant.”
Richard gripped the phone.
“What was it?”
Silence.
Then:
“Olivia Sterling.”
Richard felt like the floor moved beneath him.
Another Sterling.
Another hidden connection.
Another person carrying a secret.
But this time, the timing was different.
Olivia had not appeared recently.
She had been there for years.
Quietly.
Watching.
Helping.
Waiting.
Richard confronted her that evening.
Not with anger.
With the truth.
He found her in the library with Sophie.
That sight almost stopped him.
Because Sophie trusted her.
The little girl was sitting beside Olivia, drawing.
Laughing.
Comfortable.
The same comfort Richard had once believed Vanessa created.
But now he wondered.
Was Olivia different?
Or was she better at hiding?
“Olivia.”
She looked up.
Immediately, she knew.
Something had changed.
“Richard.”
“Sophie, sweetheart.”
The little girl looked at him.
“Yes?”
“Can you go upstairs for a little while?”
Sophie looked between them.
She sensed tension.
But nodded.
“Okay, Daddy.”
After she left, Richard closed the door.
“You’re a Sterling.”
Olivia became completely still.
No denial.
No confusion.
Just silence.
Richard saw the answer immediately.
“How long?”
Olivia looked down.
“My whole life.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Olivia swallowed.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of becoming like everyone else.”
Richard frowned.
“What does that mean?”
She looked at him.
“My name has always opened doors.”
A pause.
“And destroyed trust.”
Richard remained silent.
Olivia continued.
“My father was Charles Sterling.”
Richard froze.
Another name.
Another branch.
Another secret.
“My father was your grandfather’s younger brother.”
Richard stared.
“I didn’t know my grandfather had a brother.”
“Most people didn’t.”
“Why?”
Olivia looked toward the door.
“The Sterling family erased him.”
Richard felt exhausted.
Another erased person.
Another hidden branch.
Another person removed from history.
“Why?”
Olivia’s voice became quiet.
“Because he tried to expose what Thomas Sterling did.”
Richard stared.
“Then why did you work for me?”
Olivia looked at him.
“Because Eleanor asked me.”
Richard froze.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before she died.”
Richard felt a chill.
“What did she tell you?”
Olivia looked away.
“She said you would eventually find out.”
A pause.
“And when you did…”
She looked back.
“She wanted someone beside you who knew the truth but still believed you could choose differently.”
Richard processed her words.
“So you were protecting me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why access the files?”
Olivia hesitated.
Richard waited.
Finally, she answered.
“Because someone else was looking for them.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You accessed the files to find them?”
“Yes.”
Richard studied her.
“And the message?”
Olivia looked confused.
“What message?”
“The person who warned me about you.”
Her expression changed.
“I never sent anything.”
Richard believed her.
And that scared him.
Because if Olivia was telling the truth…
then someone else was moving pieces around them.
Someone who knew exactly what Richard would suspect.
That night, Ethan discovered another piece of information.
A security camera from three days earlier.
A person entering the mansion.
Not Vanessa.
Not Victor.
Not Edward.
Not Olivia.
Someone else.
The image was unclear.
But the person was carrying a folder.
A folder with a symbol Richard recognized.
The same symbol found on his father’s old documents.
A black circle.
Inside it, a silver crown.
Ethan zoomed in.
Then sent the image.
Richard stared.
Because he knew that symbol.
His father had warned him about it years ago.
A secret organization.
A group of wealthy families who controlled business decisions from the shadows.
The name was written beneath the symbol.
THE CROWN CIRCLE
Richard remembered his father’s words.
A sentence he had dismissed as paranoia.
“Never fight a man with money.”
A pause.
“Fight the people who give him permission to use it.”
Richard looked toward Sophie’s room.
The hidden inheritance.
The secret family.
The missing brother.
The fake identities.
The organization.
Everything was connected.
Then his phone received a final message.
No number.
No sender.
Only a picture.
A picture of Sophie sleeping.
Taken inside her bedroom.
Richard’s blood turned cold.
The message underneath said:
YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND THE TRUST.
A second message appeared.
NOW WE HAVE TO TAKE THE HEIR.
Richard dropped the phone.
Because the threat was no longer hidden.
They were not trying to destroy him.
May you like
They were not trying to steal his company.
They were coming for Sophie.
