Chapter 14 - The Boat That Never Sank

Michael Parker’s original boat had never been recovered because Richard had lied about its identity.

The Coast Guard searched for a blue thirty-two-foot cruiser.

Michael had actually left the marina aboard an older white cabin boat registered under Parker Meridian.

Richard later moved it to an abandoned boatyard in Virginia.

Nora learned the truth after Richard threatened her.

He had kept the vessel.

Another trophy.

Or another insurance policy.

Police reached the boatyard first.

Richard was not there.

But Michael’s boat was.

Seven years of dust covered its interior.

Blood remained beneath a replaced floor panel.

Michael’s blood.

Claire stood on the deck and imagined her husband fighting for his life.

Ethan touched the steering wheel.

“He was here.”

Claire nodded.

Ortiz searched the cabin.

Behind a panel they found a small camera.

Richard had recorded Michael’s final confrontation.

The memory card remained.

They watched the footage at the FBI office.

Michael stumbled onto shore after the damaged boat reached the inlet.

Richard waited beside a truck.

Michael shouted:

“You’re finished.”

Richard held a metal hook.

“You should have taken the money.”

“Claire knows.”

“No, she doesn’t.”

“She knows enough.”

Richard struck him.

Claire closed her eyes.

Ethan did not.

Michael fell.

Richard approached.

Michael looked directly toward the hidden camera.

Then said:

“My son will finish this.”

Richard struck him again.

The video ended.

Ethan stared at the black screen.

His father’s final words had been about him.

Not revenge.

Not money.

Him.

Claire took Ethan’s hand.

“You don’t have to finish anything.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Dad didn’t mean kill him.”

Claire waited.

“He meant tell the truth.”

For the first time, she realized how much Ethan had changed.

Not because violence made him stronger.

Because he had seen what silence allowed.

Michael had died trying to expose Richard.

Nora had stayed quiet out of fear.

Charles had stayed quiet out of self-preservation.

Danner had stayed quiet because he was threatened.

Kessler had stayed quiet because he was paid.

Every silence built the coffin around Claire.

Ethan had broken it open.

Richard called that evening.

This time he asked for Claire directly.

“I want a deal.”

“You don’t have anything I want.”

“I have the name of the Circle’s leader.”

Claire looked at Ortiz.

“Then surrender.”

“I surrender and I die in custody.”

“Not my problem.”

“They’ll kill Ethan too.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“Don’t say his name.”

“You think Michael’s notebook ended this?”

“No.”

“It started something.”

“Where are you?”

Richard gave an address.

A cemetery.

Michael Parker’s empty memorial stood there.

Claire laughed bitterly.

“You have a thing for cemeteries.”

“Midnight.”

“You’re insane if you think I’m coming alone.”

“I don’t care who comes.”

That surprised her.

“I’m tired of running.”

At 11:58 p.m., police surrounded the cemetery covertly.

Claire walked toward Michael’s memorial.

Richard stepped from the shadows.

He looked thinner.

Unshaven.

Exhausted.

For the first time since Claire had known him, he looked afraid.

“Where’s Ethan?”

“Somewhere you’ll never reach him.”

Richard nodded.

“Good.”

Claire stared.

“You don’t get to pretend you care.”

“I don’t.”

He handed her a flash drive.

“The Circle’s leader is on there.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because he ordered my execution.”

“Who?”

Richard looked beyond her.

“The man who helped your father build Parker Meridian.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

“Charles?”

Richard shook his head.

“Your father.”

Claire stared.

“Henry Parker created the Circle.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Your father started laundering government money twenty-five years ago.”

Claire shook her head.

“Michael discovered Richard.”

“Michael discovered all of us.”

Richard smiled bitterly.

“Your father ordered me to stop him.”

Claire could barely speak.

“My father ordered Michael’s murder?”

“No.”

Richard looked toward the memorial.

“Henry ordered me to scare him.”

“Then you killed him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Michael had discovered something Henry never wanted you to know.”

Claire tightened her grip on the drive.

“What?”

Richard answered:

“Parker Meridian wasn’t stolen from your family.”

A spotlight snapped on.

Federal agents rushed forward.

Richard raised his hands.

Before they reached him, a rifle shot cracked through the cemetery.

Richard jerked backward.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

“SNIPER!”

Claire dropped behind the memorial.

Agents returned fire toward a tree line.

Richard lay on the ground.

Claire crawled toward him.

He grabbed her wrist.

“East Bay.”

“What?”

“The basement.”

His breathing became ragged.

“Your father’s real records.”

“Richard!”

“Third wall.”

His grip weakened.

“Ask why Michael wanted you to sell the company.”

Then Richard lost consciousness.

He survived.

But his final revelation shattered the story Claire thought she understood.

Because if Richard was telling the truth, the corruption had started before he ever entered their family.

It had started with Claire’s father.
