Chapter 11 - Claire Parker Returns From the Dead

Legally returning from the dead was more difficult than surviving a coffin.

Claire’s bank accounts were frozen.

Her driver’s license had been canceled.

Her company access had been terminated.

Her health insurance listed her as deceased.

Even her phone contract had been closed.

Richard had prepared everything.

At 9:00 a.m. Monday, Parker Meridian’s board gathered for the Harbor Point vote.

Richard appeared by video.

No one knew where he was.

He wore a dark suit.

Calm.

Controlled.

“As Claire Parker’s surviving spouse,” he began, “I exercise the temporary voting authority established under the Parker family trust.”

Charles Wynn’s seat was empty.

Police had arrested him hours earlier.

Nora entered the boardroom.

The directors stared.

Behind her came Detective Ortiz.

Then Ethan.

And finally Claire.

No one spoke.

Richard’s face on the screen lost all color.

Claire walked toward her chair.

“You were saying?”

The room erupted.

Several directors stood.

One woman began crying.

Richard recovered quickly.

“This meeting is unlawful.”

Claire sat.

“So was my funeral.”

“You are legally deceased.”

“Temporarily.”

“You have no voting authority until a court restores—”

Nora placed an emergency judicial order on the table.

“Already done.”

Richard stared.

Claire smiled without warmth.

“I had an interesting weekend.”

Richard disconnected.

The board immediately suspended the Harbor Point sale.

Then Claire made the decision Richard never anticipated.

She disclosed everything.

Michael’s murder.

The hidden graves.

The fraud.

The laundering scheme.

Her own attempted burial.

Parker Meridian’s stock price would collapse.

The company might face lawsuits.

Directors begged her to wait.

She refused.

“My family spent years protecting this company’s reputation.”

Claire looked around the table.

“And that protection gave Richard room to hide.”

She released the evidence to federal authorities.

By evening, news helicopters circled Parker Meridian headquarters.

Richard became one of the most wanted fugitives in the state.

Then the FBI joined the investigation.

Blackthorn’s accounts were frozen.

Three executives were arrested.

Dr. Kessler was captured at an airport trying to board a flight to Switzerland.

He immediately requested an attorney.

Richard remained missing.

That night, Claire returned home for the first time.

The house felt contaminated.

Richard’s shoes remained inside the closet.

His coffee cup sat in the dishwasher.

His handwriting covered notes in the kitchen.

For years, evil had not lived in some distant hidden room.

It had eaten breakfast at her table.

Ethan stood in Richard’s old office.

“We should burn everything.”

Claire almost agreed.

Instead, she said:

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he doesn’t get to decide what this house becomes.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What happens now?”

Claire walked toward the window.

“We rebuild.”

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Richard.

“You embarrassed me today.”

Claire activated the recorder.

“You buried two people under my company.”

“Three would have been cleaner.”

Her expression didn’t change.

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

“Are you going to kill me?”

“No.”

A pause.

“That would prove your story.”

“Then what do you want?”

“The watch.”

Claire looked toward Ethan.

Richard knew they had found it.

“What watch?”

“Don’t insult me.”

Richard’s voice hardened.

“Michael copied something he should never have seen.”

“What?”

“A list.”

Claire glanced at Ortiz, who had begun tracing the call.

“What list?”

“The people behind Blackthorn.”

“We have the files.”

“No.”

Richard laughed.

“You have accountants and shell corporations.”

His next words chilled her.

“Michael had names.”

Names that had never appeared in the warehouse archive.

Judges.

Bankers.

Government contractors.

People with enough power to destroy investigations.

“Where is the list?” Claire asked.

“You tell me.”

“I don’t have it.”

Richard went silent.

Then:

“Ethan does.”

The call ended.

Claire turned.

Her son was holding Michael’s broken watch.

And suddenly everyone understood.

The Harbor Ledger had only been the first door.

The estate archive had been the second.

May you like

Michael Parker had left a third.

For Ethan alone.
