CHAPTER 3 — The Vault Beneath the Empire

The words FEDERAL INVESTIGATION hung in the boardroom like a death sentence.

No one spoke.

Nathan looked from the sealed file to Evelyn.

"What is this?"

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she turned to Adrian.

"Bring them in."

The boardroom doors opened.

Two forensic accountants.

A retired federal prosecutor.

An independent corporate auditor.

Finally, an elderly man carrying a weathered leather briefcase.

Edward's expression changed the instant he saw him.

"No..."

The old man placed the briefcase on the conference table.

"My name is Samuel Mercer."

"I served as Ashford Global's General Counsel for twenty-eight years."

Edward's voice became hoarse.

"You retired."

Samuel looked directly at him.

"I resigned."

"There's a difference."

Samuel slowly opened the briefcase.

Inside were dozens of original documents.

Handwritten board minutes.

Old contracts.

Property deeds.

Share certificates.

He carefully removed the oldest folder.

"I kept these because I believed one day someone honest would need them."

Every eye followed his hands.

He laid a faded agreement before the directors.

"This document is dated six years ago."

The room remained silent.

"It proves that Ashford Global was already insolvent before the public ever knew."

One director frowned.

"But the annual report showed record profits."

Samuel nodded.

"Those profits never existed."

He slid another file across the table.

"They were manufactured."

The forensic accountant activated the projector.

Columns of numbers filled the screen.

Revenue reported to shareholders.

Actual revenue.

The differences were staggering.

Hundreds of millions of dollars.

Edward slowly lowered himself into his chair.

Nathan stared at the screen in disbelief.

"My father..."

"...you falsified everything?"

Edward said nothing.

His silence was louder than any confession.

The next file was worse.

Adrian opened a folder labeled PRIVATE SETTLEMENTS.

"There were seven workplace accidents over the last decade."

The board members nodded.

They remembered the reports.

Minor incidents.

Small compensation payments.

Nothing unusual.

Adrian looked around the room.

"The reports were false."

The projector displayed photographs.

Unsafe factories.

Broken machinery.

Employees receiving inadequate medical treatment.

One director covered her mouth.

"My God..."

Samuel spoke quietly.

"Three employees died."

"Their families signed confidentiality agreements because they were threatened with bankruptcy if they refused."

Nathan slowly looked at his father.

"You told me they were unavoidable accidents."

Edward stared at the floor.

"I believed what our legal department prepared."

Samuel interrupted him.

"No."

"You approved every settlement personally."

Lillian suddenly stood.

"This has nothing to do with me."

"I never worked in the factories."

Evelyn finally spoke.

"No."

"But you benefited from every dollar hidden from those families."

Lillian froze.

Adrian placed another spreadsheet on the screen.

Luxury purchases.

Designer jewelry.

Private villas.

European vacations.

Every expense had been paid through accounts funded by concealed corporate reserves.

Lillian's voice trembled.

"I didn't know where the money came from."

Evelyn answered calmly.

"You never asked."

Nathan leaned back in his chair.

Every memory from childhood suddenly felt different.

The expensive schools.

The yachts.

The endless vacations.

The lavish birthday parties.

Everything had been paid for by a company built on lies.

He whispered almost to himself,

"What have we done?"

Evelyn heard him.

"You didn't build this."

"But you chose not to question it."

Nathan closed his eyes.

For the first time in his life...

He understood the difference.

A soft knock interrupted the meeting.

The Chief of Security entered carrying a sealed evidence box.

"Ms. Cross."

"We've recovered the contents of Mr. Edward Ashford's private office."

Edward immediately stood.

"Those files are protected by attorney-client privilege."

The prosecutor calmly replied,

"Not when they're evidence of corporate fraud."

The box was opened.

Inside were hard drives.

USB devices.

Paper ledgers.

And one small black notebook.

Samuel's face became pale.

"I remember that."

Edward lunged toward the table.

"Don't touch it!"

Security restrained him before he reached it.

Evelyn slowly opened the notebook.

Every page contained handwritten initials.

Dates.

Amounts.

Secret payments.

Bribes.

Political donations disguised as consulting fees.

Then she reached the final page.

Her eyes narrowed.

"What is it?" Adrian asked.

She silently handed him the notebook.

His expression changed instantly.

"This..."

He looked toward Edward.

"...explains everything."

Nathan stepped closer.

"What?"

Adrian hesitated.

Then he placed the notebook beneath the document camera.

Across the final page was a handwritten instruction.

If the controlling shareholder ever reveals her identity, remove her before she can regain operational control. Make it look like an accident.

The room froze.

No one breathed.

Nathan's face turned ghost white.

He looked at his father.

"You planned to kill her?"

Edward's lips trembled.

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

"It was only a precaution."

Nathan stumbled backward.

"I married her..."

"...while you were planning her death."

Lillian burst into tears.

Helena buried her face in her hands.

The board members stared at Edward with undisguised horror.

Evelyn remained remarkably composed.

She closed the notebook.

"This is no longer a corporate investigation."

She turned to the federal prosecutor.

"It has become a criminal conspiracy."

The prosecutor nodded once.

"It has."

He signaled to the agents waiting outside.

The boardroom doors opened again.

This time, they weren't company security officers.

They were federal investigators.

One stepped forward holding a warrant.

"Edward Ashford..."

"You are under arrest."

The words echoed through the silent room.

As officers placed handcuffs around Edward's wrists, he looked at Evelyn one final time.

"I built everything."

She met his gaze without anger.

"No."

"You only believed you did."

The agents led him toward the elevator.

Nathan stood motionless, unable to look away.

The empire he had inherited had vanished in less than twenty-four hours.

His father was in handcuffs.

His family name was disgraced.

His marriage was over.

He thought the nightmare had reached its end.

He was wrong.

As Adrian's phone vibrated, he read the incoming message and looked at Evelyn.

"The investigators just searched Edward's private residence."

"What did they find?" she asked.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"A hidden vault."

He paused.

"They say what's inside could change the entire history of the Ashford family."

May you like

For the first time that day...

Even Evelyn looked surprised.
