CHAPTER 2 — The Boardroom Coup

The moment Evelyn stepped out of the Ashford estate, she didn't look back.

Behind her, the mansion buzzed with panic.

Nathan shouted into his phone.

Edward demanded answers from executives who had suddenly stopped taking his calls.

Helena insisted the board would "fix this misunderstanding."

Lillian screamed at her bank after every one of her premium credit cards was declined.

For the first time in decades, the Ashford family discovered what powerlessness felt like.

A black Rolls-Royce pulled to the front entrance.

Adrian Cole stood beside the rear door.

Unlike everyone else, he didn't look surprised.

He simply inclined his head.

"Good morning, Ms. Cross."

Evelyn entered the car.

"Status?"

"The emergency board meeting begins in forty-two minutes."

"And the directors?"

"Twenty-one have already arrived."

"The remaining four are attending remotely from London and Singapore."

She nodded.

"What about the Ashfords?"

"They've been denied access to every executive system."

Adrian handed her a leather folder.

"Our forensic accountants worked through the night."

Evelyn opened it.

The first page made her expression harden.

Unauthorized bonuses.

Hidden subsidiaries.

Luxury properties purchased through shell companies.

Private expenses disguised as research investments.

She slowly turned another page.

Then another.

Each signature belonged to Edward Ashford.

Several approvals bore Nathan's signature.

Others had Helena's authorization.

Lillian's name appeared repeatedly beside personal expenditures charged directly to the corporation.

Designer jewelry.

Private yachts.

European shopping trips.

Nearly eighteen million dollars.

All disguised as "client relations."

Evelyn quietly closed the folder.

"They never expected anyone to audit them."

Adrian answered softly.

"Because they believed no one had the authority."

"They were wrong."

Blackstone Tower dominated the Manhattan skyline.

As Evelyn entered the lobby, every employee stopped what they were doing.

Some recognized her immediately.

Others only knew the anonymous investor whose identity had remained hidden for five years.

The receptionist stood.

"So... it's true?"

Evelyn smiled politely.

"I'm afraid so."

The elevator doors opened.

No one spoke during the ride to the executive floor.

The silence carried the weight of history.

The boardroom overlooked the city through walls of glass.

Twenty-five directors rose the moment Evelyn entered.

One chair remained empty.

Edward Ashford's.

By company tradition, it belonged to the CEO.

Today, no one expected him to occupy it again.

The oldest director cleared his throat.

"Madam Chair..."

"The meeting is yours."

Evelyn remained standing.

"For five years, I deliberately stayed invisible."

"I believed the Ashford family deserved the opportunity to rebuild the company they nearly destroyed."

She paused.

"I was mistaken."

A screen descended from the ceiling.

Adrian connected his laptop.

"Directors, today's presentation contains evidence gathered over the past twelve hours."

The first document appeared.

A transfer of seventy-eight million dollars into a consulting firm that existed only on paper.

The second.

Invoices for construction projects that had never been completed.

The third.

Luxury vacations charged as international negotiations.

The room fell silent.

Director Elaine Morrison leaned forward.

"My God..."

"It gets worse," Adrian replied.

He opened another file.

Security footage from Ashford Global headquarters.

Edward meeting secretly with competitors.

Nathan signing approval forms without reading them.

Helena instructing employees to destroy internal correspondence.

No one interrupted.

Every revelation was worse than the last.

Halfway through the presentation, the boardroom doors burst open.

Edward Ashford stormed inside.

Nathan, Helena, and Lillian followed close behind.

"You have no authority to hold this meeting!"

Edward slammed both hands on the conference table.

"This company belongs to my family."

Evelyn calmly looked up.

"Does it?"

Edward laughed.

"The board will never vote against me."

One director slowly raised a folder.

"Actually..."

"We've already seen the evidence."

Another director spoke.

"So have our legal advisers."

A third director added quietly,

"And the regulators."

Edward's confidence began to crack.

Nathan looked around the room.

Every face avoided his.

No allies.

No supporters.

Only disappointment.

Lillian pointed at Evelyn.

"She's manipulating everyone!"

Evelyn folded her hands.

"No."

"I simply stopped protecting you."

Adrian pressed another key.

A recording filled the room.

Edward's voice echoed through the speakers.

"If the controlling shareholder ever reveals herself..."

"...make sure she never gets close enough to ask questions."

The timestamp was four years old.

Edward's face drained of color.

Nathan stared at his father.

"You knew?"

Edward said nothing.

Nathan's voice shook.

"You knew she owned the company..."

"...and you never told us?"

Helena whispered,

"Edward..."

He slowly lowered his head.

He had no explanation.

The general counsel stood.

"The evidence supports immediate suspension of all executive authority previously delegated to the Ashford family."

The chairman of the audit committee nodded.

"I second the motion."

One by one...

Hands rose.

Twenty-five votes.

Not one opposed.

"The motion carries."

It was over.

Just like that.

The Ashford dynasty had fallen.

Not because of a hostile takeover.

Not because of a market crash.

But because the truth had finally entered the room.

Edward pointed at Evelyn.

"You planned this from the beginning."

She met his gaze without anger.

"No."

"I planned to save your company."

"You chose to destroy your family."

Nathan slowly removed the executive access badge from his jacket.

He stared at it for several seconds.

Then placed it on the conference table.

The tiny piece of plastic made almost no sound.

Yet it echoed louder than any speech.

Because everyone understood what it meant.

For the first time in thirty-seven years...

There was no Ashford in charge of Ashford Global.

As security escorted the family toward the elevators, Nathan turned back one final time.

"Evelyn..."

She looked at him.

"I know nothing I say can change today."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"But please..."

"Tell me there isn't something I still don't know."

Evelyn's expression remained unreadable.

"There isn't."

She paused just long enough for hope to flicker across his face.

Then she quietly added,

"Only one thing."

Nathan waited.

"The investigation wasn't triggered by the money."

"It was triggered by something far more serious."

She glanced toward Adrian.

He placed another sealed file on the conference table.

Across the front were stamped four words in bold red letters:

CONFIDENTIAL — FEDERAL INVESTIGATION

Nathan felt the blood drain from his face.

Edward closed his eyes.

Helena stumbled backward into a chair.

Even Lillian stopped speaking.

May you like

Because if federal investigators were already involved...

The collapse of the Ashford empire had only just begun.
