CHAPTER 1 – THE FOOTAGE NEVER LIES

Marcus Thorne couldn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on the woman lying on the marble floor.

Khloe.

His wife.

His seven-month-pregnant wife.

She was curled around her stomach, trembling violently, one hand pressed against the growing stain spreading across her pale evening gown.

Blood.

Too much blood.

For one endless second, the room was silent.

Then everyone started shouting at once.

"Call a doctor!"

"Get a stretcher!"

"She's bleeding!"

Marcus finally rushed forward.

"Khloe!"

She lifted her head with visible effort.

Her lips trembled.

"Marcus..."

His name barely escaped her mouth before another wave of pain stole her breath.

Her fingers tightened protectively over her belly.

"The baby..."

Marcus dropped to his knees beside her.

"Stay with me."

He reached for her hand.

Before he could touch it, another hand grabbed his arm.

It was Isabella.

She was crying uncontrollably.

Mascara streaked down her cheeks.

Her breathing came in desperate gasps.

"Marcus... thank God you're here."

He looked up.

"What happened?"

Isabella shook her head as if the memory itself terrified her.

"I came to check on her."

Another sob.

"She accused me of trying to steal you."

Marcus frowned.

"I tried to calm her down."

Her voice cracked.

"She pushed me first."

Another tear rolled down her cheek.

"I defended myself."

Marcus looked back at Khloe.

She was too weak to answer.

Every breath looked painful.

"Marcus..."

She reached toward him.

"I..."

But another contraction of pain cut her off.

The emergency alarm echoed through the hallway.

Within seconds, doctors and nurses flooded into the suite.

"Move back!"

"We're taking over."

A trauma physician knelt beside Khloe.

"Seven months pregnant."

Another nurse checked her pulse.

"Blood pressure is crashing."

A third looked between Khloe's legs.

"We have active bleeding."

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

"What does that mean?"

The physician didn't sugarcoat the answer.

"It could be placental abruption."

Marcus stared blankly.

"What?"

"It means the placenta may have separated from the uterus."

Silence.

"If that's happening..."

The doctor looked him straight in the eyes.

"We're fighting for two lives."

Everything around Marcus blurred.

Doctors surrounded Khloe.

IV lines.

Monitors.

Oxygen.

Someone rolled in a stretcher.

Khloe reached toward Marcus one last time.

"I didn't..."

The sentence never finished.

Her eyes closed as another wave of agony overwhelmed her.

The medical team rushed her into the hallway.

Marcus instinctively followed.

A nurse stopped him.

"We'll take her to surgery."

"I need to stay with my wife."

"You'll only slow us down."

The doors slammed shut.

Marcus stood frozen outside the operating suite.

The corridor suddenly felt impossibly quiet.

Until Isabella appeared beside him.

Still crying.

Still shaking.

She slipped her hand around his arm.

"I never wanted this."

Marcus slowly pulled away.

"I need to think."

She lowered her eyes.

"You don't believe me."

"I don't know what to believe."

That answer cut deeper than either of them expected.

Twenty minutes later...

The hospital had transformed into controlled chaos.

Security officers sealed the private floor.

Executives from the gala waited downstairs.

Reporters had already begun gathering outside after rumors spread that the Thorne family had suffered a medical emergency.

Inside the operating room...

Khloe drifted between consciousness and darkness.

The sound of fetal monitors echoed around her.

"Heart rate dropping."

"We're losing pressure."

"Prepare blood."

The voices blended together.

She could barely hear them.

All she could think about was her baby.

Please...

Let my baby live.

At nearly the same moment...

A black SUV stopped outside the emergency entrance.

A distinguished man in his early sixties stepped out before the vehicle had fully stopped.

Dr. Adrian Bennett.

Chief Administrator of St. Gabriel Medical Center.

World-renowned trauma surgeon.

And...

Khloe's uncle.

He had been attending an international medical conference across town when his phone rang.

The caller spoke only one sentence.

"Your niece has been assaulted."

He ran.

Not walked.

Ran through his own hospital.

Doctors flattened themselves against the walls as he passed.

No one had ever seen the calm administrator move like that.

He reached the operating suite.

Marcus stood outside.

The two men locked eyes.

Marcus immediately stood.

"Dr. Bennett..."

Adrian ignored the greeting.

"How is she?"

"The doctors are trying to save her."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"What happened?"

Marcus hesitated.

"I..."

Before he could answer...

Isabella stepped forward.

"It was an accident."

Adrian slowly turned toward her.

His expression became unreadable.

"An accident?"

"Khloe became emotional."

Isabella wiped another tear away.

"She slipped."

No one spoke.

Adrian looked at the blood still staining Isabella's expensive shoes.

Then at the scratches on her wrist.

Then at Marcus.

"You saw it happen?"

Marcus lowered his head.

"I arrived afterward."

Adrian nodded once.

Then quietly pulled out his phone.

"Good."

Marcus frowned.

"Good?"

"If you didn't witness it..."

He looked toward the ceiling.

"...then the cameras did."

For the first time that night...

Isabella stopped crying.

Her face lost every trace of color.

"What cameras?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he turned toward the head of hospital security who had just arrived.

"I want every recording."

"Every hallway."

"Every elevator."

"Every entrance."

"And every camera covering that private suite."

The security chief nodded immediately.

"Yes, Doctor."

"No edits."

"No delays."

"No exceptions."

"I want the original files."

"Immediately."

Isabella swallowed hard.

"Doctor... surely we don't need all of that."

Adrian finally looked directly into her eyes.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"In my hospital..."

"...truth is never optional."

Downstairs...

Inside the hospital's secure surveillance office...

A technician inserted the encrypted backup drive.

Four monitors flickered to life.

Time stamps appeared.

8:41 p.m.

Private Suite 1708.

The room looked peaceful.

Khloe entered alone.

A few moments later...

The door opened again.

Isabella walked inside.

The technician pressed pause.

He glanced nervously toward Adrian.

"The recording begins here."

Adrian folded his arms.

Marcus stood beside him.

Neither man spoke.

The technician took a slow breath.

May you like

Then...

He pressed play.
