Chapter 1: The Photograph That Stopped Time

Chapter 1: The Photograph That Stopped Time

Silence swallowed the ballroom.

No one moved.

The champagne glasses remained suspended in trembling hands as every pair of eyes shifted from Victoria to the crying waitress.

The young woman slowly unfolded the faded photograph.

"I didn't come here to ruin anyone's marriage," she whispered. "I only wanted to know if the man in this picture was really my father."

Richard stared at the image.

His heart pounded.

It was an old photograph of him in his twenties, smiling beside a maternity ward window.

He had not seen that picture in over thirty years.

Beside him stood an exhausted young woman holding a newborn wrapped in a pale blue blanket embroidered with tiny white stars.

The same blanket.

The retired maternity nurse stepped forward, her voice shaking.

"I remember that baby."

Every head turned toward her.

"I worked the night shift at St. Mary's Hospital. I wrapped that little girl myself."

Richard's breathing became uneven.

"That's impossible."

The nurse slowly shook her head.

"No, Mr. Harrison. I never forgot what happened that night."

She looked directly at the waitress.

"Those eyes... they're her mother's."

Victoria suddenly felt the room spinning.

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"This is some kind of trick."

But no one answered.

The nurse continued.

"There was a fire alarm that night. The maternity ward was evacuated. During the confusion, one infant disappeared."

Richard felt the blood drain from his face.

His daughter.

The daughter everyone believed had died.

The daughter he had mourned for decades.

The waitress lowered her eyes.

"My name is Emily."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I grew up in foster care."

"I never knew who my parents were."

"Until three months ago."

She handed Richard another envelope.

Inside lay a DNA report.

Richard opened it with trembling hands.

Probability of biological relationship:

99.9998%.

His knees nearly gave out.

Emily caught him before he fell.

For the first time in thirty years...

A father held his daughter.

And neither of them could stop crying.
