Chapter 17 - THE NAVARRO EMPIRE

The company board expected Alejandro to protect the Navarro name.

They had miscalculated.

Thirteen directors sat around the table where Ricardo had ruled for decades.

The chairman spoke first.

“We need to control the narrative.”

Alejandro almost smiled.

“The narrative?”

“Your father is dead. Santa Isabel may face liability. This can be described as a tragic medical error.”

“It became something else when my father kidnapped the truth.”

Several directors shifted uncomfortably.

The chairman lowered his voice.

“You should think carefully about what public accusations could do to the company.”

Alejandro looked around the room.

There it was.

The same logic Ricardo had used.

Protect the institution.

Protect the name.

Protect the money.

Truth came last.

Alejandro placed copies of the journal and laboratory report on the table.

“I am releasing these to investigators.”

The chairman stared.

“You could destabilize the trust.”

“I know.”

“You could lose voting control.”

“I know.”

“Your father built this company for you.”

Alejandro’s expression changed.

“No.”

He stood.

“My father stole someone else’s child to preserve this company.”

Nobody spoke.

“If Navarro Industrial cannot survive the truth about Ricardo Navarro, then perhaps it does not deserve to survive unchanged.”

He resigned as executive chairman that afternoon.

Financial markets reacted.

Reporters screamed questions.

Lawyers warned him he was surrendering leverage.

Alejandro felt lighter than he had in weeks.

That evening Lucía called.

“I saw the news.”

“I’m sorry you had to.”

“I’m not.”

He smiled faintly.

“You gave up the company?”

“No. I gave up a chair.”

“There’s a difference?”

“A very expensive difference.”

Lucía laughed.

The sound surprised both of them.

Then she became quiet.

“Your father gave you many things.”

Alejandro understood.

She was afraid he would believe rejecting Ricardo required rejecting his entire life.

“He did.”

“And some were good.”

“Yes.”

“You’re allowed to keep the good.”

Alejandro stared through the window.

May you like

That was the mercy Ricardo had never given anyone else.

The freedom to hold two truths at once.
