Chapter 3 – The Lie Called "Just a Friend"

The red SURGERY IN PROGRESS light continued to glow above the operating room.

Alex hadn't moved in nearly three hours.

His turnout jacket lay folded beside him.

Lucy’s wedding ring remained clenched in his fist so tightly that its edges left deep marks across his palm.

Every time the operating room doors swung open, he shot to his feet.

Every time, it was another nurse.

Another orderly.

Another patient.

Never Lucy.

Never their daughter.

The waiting was unbearable.

And for the first time in years...

Silence forced him to remember.

Three years earlier...

It had been raining on their wedding day.

Not heavily.

Just enough for tiny droplets to sparkle across Lucy's veil as she laughed beneath the church steps.

"You know," she teased, "they say rain on your wedding day means good luck."

Alex smiled.

"I'm a firefighter."

"I don't believe in luck."

Lucy slipped her hand into his.

"What do you believe in?"

He kissed her forehead.

"You."

She laughed.

"I mean it."

"I'll always choose you."

At the time...

Neither of them imagined how expensive those words would become.

The first crack in their marriage appeared almost two years later.

It began with a phone call.

Alex had just finished a twenty-four-hour shift when his phone lit up.

Valerie Monroe.

Lucy glanced at the screen.

"I thought she still lived in London."

"She moved back yesterday."

Alex answered casually.

"She doesn't know anyone here anymore."

Lucy smiled.

"You should catch up."

She meant it.

She trusted him completely.

One dinner became two.

Two became weekly coffee.

Weekly coffee became late-night phone calls.

Then emergencies.

Valerie locked herself out of her apartment.

Alex went.

Her kitchen sink leaked.

Alex fixed it.

Her car wouldn't start.

Alex drove across the city.

She said she couldn't sleep.

He stayed on the phone until sunrise.

Every explanation sounded reasonable.

Individually.

Together...

They slowly replaced a marriage.

Lucy never complained.

Instead...

She adjusted.

She ate dinner alone.

Again.

She celebrated her birthday with takeout because Alex had promised Valerie he'd help assemble new furniture.

"Our dinner won't take long," he'd said.

He came home after midnight.

Still smelling faintly of vanilla candles.

Lucy never mentioned it.

Months later...

Their first 4D ultrasound was scheduled for Thursday morning.

Lucy had circled the date on the refrigerator weeks in advance.

Alex promised he'd be there.

"I wouldn't miss seeing my daughter for anything."

At 8:12 a.m., his phone rang.

Valerie.

She was crying.

"My stomach hurts."

"I think something's wrong."

Alex looked from the ringing phone...

To Lucy waiting beside the examination room.

"I'll only be an hour."

Lucy smiled.

"Go."

He kissed her forehead.

"I'll be right back."

He never arrived.

Instead...

Lucy watched their daughter's tiny fingers stretch across the ultrasound screen alone.

When the technician asked,

"Would your husband like a copy?"

Lucy quietly answered,

"I'll send him a picture."

She texted Alex three ultrasound photographs.

His reply arrived five hours later.

Sorry. Busy day. How did it go?

Lucy stared at the message for a long time.

Then typed only three words.

She's beautiful. ❤️

She never mentioned crying all the way home.

Back in the hospital...

Alex covered his face.

He remembered that day perfectly.

Valerie hadn't even been admitted.

The emergency room physician diagnosed indigestion.

She was discharged forty minutes later.

Forty minutes.

He had missed one of the most important moments of his daughter's life...

For forty minutes.

Another memory surfaced.

Christmas Eve.

Lucy had decorated the house herself.

Every light.

Every ornament.

Every wrapped present beneath the tree.

Dinner was ready.

The candles were lit.

Alex received another call.

Valerie.

"My apartment lost power."

"I'm scared."

Lucy looked toward the dining table.

Everything was waiting.

"So..."

Alex hesitated.

"I should probably..."

Lucy finished the sentence for him.

"Go."

"I'll keep dinner warm."

He smiled gratefully.

"I won't be long."

Snow began falling outside.

Lucy waited.

Nine o'clock.

Ten.

Eleven.

Midnight.

The candles melted into pools of wax.

The food turned cold.

Alex returned at two in the morning carrying leftover pie Valerie had insisted he take home.

He found Lucy asleep on the couch.

Still wearing the red dress she had bought because he once said it was his favorite color.

He covered her with a blanket.

Then quietly placed the pie in the refrigerator.

He never noticed the untouched Christmas dinner.

The memories became impossible to stop.

Valentine's Day.

Anniversary dinners.

Doctor appointments.

Baby shopping.

Each memory ended exactly the same way.

Valerie called.

Alex left.

Lucy smiled.

And silently accepted another disappointment.

Not because she believed she deserved it.

Because she loved him enough to keep choosing understanding over resentment.

Inside the operating room...

Dr. Carter looked toward the monitor.

"Blood pressure is stabilizing."

The anesthesiologist nodded.

"Baby's heart rate is improving."

For the first time all night...

Hope flickered.

Outside...

Mark Sullivan approached quietly.

He carried two paper cups of coffee.

"I figured you hadn't eaten."

Alex accepted the cup without speaking.

After several minutes, Mark finally asked,

"Can I ask you something, Lieutenant?"

Alex nodded weakly.

"Did you know that woman inside was your wife?"

Alex looked up sharply.

"What kind of question is that?"

Mark didn't look away.

"Because..."

"When you entered that elevator..."

"I thought you were searching for someone."

He paused.

"But you already knew exactly who you were looking for."

Alex's throat tightened.

"I..."

Mark continued gently.

"My father used to tell me something."

"'The person you run toward first...'"

"'...is the person your heart has already chosen.'"

Silence settled between them.

Alex couldn't argue.

Because Mark was right.

He hadn't looked.

He hadn't searched.

He had heard Valerie's voice...

And every instinct had carried him straight to her.

Not because she needed him more.

Because somewhere along the way...

Without ever admitting it...

He had allowed another woman to become the center of his emotional world.

He had never crossed the line physically.

But emotionally...

He had left his marriage long before the elevator doors ever opened.

The rescue hadn't destroyed his relationship.

It had simply revealed the truth that Lucy had been living with for years.

At that moment, the operating room doors finally opened.

Dr. Emily Carter stepped into the hallway.

Her surgical cap was still on.

Her face was unreadable.

Alex stood so quickly that his coffee spilled across the floor.

"Doctor..."

May you like

He could barely breathe.

"Is my wife alive?"
