CHAPTER 2 — The Camera They Thought Was Gone

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

For the first time that afternoon, the Carter estate disappeared behind me.

I lay strapped to a backboard beneath harsh white lights while Paramedic Rachel Kim kept one steady hand on my shoulder.

"Stay with me, Claire."

"I can't feel my legs," I whispered.

"I know. Just keep talking to me."

The ambulance sped toward Hartford Memorial Hospital as police cruisers raced in the opposite direction.

Back at the mansion, Detective Daniel Foster had already sealed the property.

No guest was allowed to leave.

Not my parents.

Not Evan.

Not even the catering staff.

Everyone became a witness.

The trauma team rushed me straight into surgery.

Three fractured vertebrae.

A damaged spinal cord.

Internal bleeding.

When I woke nearly eight hours later, the room was dark except for the monitor beside my bed.

Rachel was sitting quietly in the corner.

"You stayed?" I asked.

"I was off shift," she replied.

"But something about your family bothered me."

She placed a business card on the bedside table.

"Detective Foster wants another statement."

I nodded.

This time, I told him everything.

Not just about the shove.

About years of manipulation.

The favoritism.

The lies.

The threats after Grandfather changed his will.

The detective listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he slowly closed his notebook.

"There's one problem."

My stomach tightened.

"The security footage was erased."

I closed my eyes.

Evan had done exactly what I feared.

Marcus.

The security room.

The missing recordings.

They had planned everything.

Detective Foster leaned forward.

"That's what your brother believes."

He pulled a photograph from his folder and slid it onto my blanket.

It showed a tiny security camera mounted beneath the roof over the garage.

"The company that upgraded your home's security installed this camera six months after the original system."

"It doesn't record to the main server."

"It stores everything on its own encrypted drive."

I stared at the picture.

"They forgot about it."

"So did your brother."

Across town, Evan Carter believed the danger had passed.

His attorney held a late-night strategy meeting.

Richard and Elaine agreed on a single story.

Claire lost her balance.

The railing failed.

She panicked.

Nothing more.

By sunrise, local television stations repeated that version of events.

Neighbors sent sympathy.

Business associates offered support.

The Carter family looked like victims.

Until Detective Foster received the encrypted memory card.

The footage lasted only fifty-three seconds.

It needed no sound.

No explanation.

It clearly showed Evan forcing Claire backward.

His hands struck both shoulders.

The railing shattered.

Claire disappeared over the edge.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Instead of running to help...

Evan calmly stepped toward the broken railing...

Looked down...

And walked away.

Detective Foster watched the video three times.

On the fourth viewing, he quietly called the prosecutor.

By sunrise...

A judge signed an arrest warrant.

At 7:18 a.m., police surrounded Evan's attorney's office.

Television cameras captured everything.

The same man who had smiled at his birthday party walked out in handcuffs.

For the first time in his privileged life...

No amount of money...

No family influence...

May you like

No carefully crafted lie...

Could erase what one forgotten camera had recorded.
