Chapter 1 — The Sale That Changed Everything

Molly arrived in less than ten minutes.
She didn't ask questions.
She simply wrapped a blanket around Ivy, opened the passenger door, and helped me into the car.
As we drove away, I never looked back.
The mansion disappeared in the rain.
So did fifteen years of memories.
The next morning, Jennifer and I met through a video call while Ivy slept beside me.
Elliot, the buyer, joined from New York.
He was the founder of an investment firm known for closing multimillion-dollar purchases in days instead of months.
"I've reviewed the title," he said.
"The property is clean."
"No liens."
"No shared ownership."
"No legal claims from your husband."
He paused.
"If you're certain..."
"I'll wire the funds today."
I looked at the photographs hanging behind me.
Wedding pictures.
Family vacations.
A home that had slowly become unfamiliar long before Brent locked me outside.
"I'm certain."
Jennifer slid the electronic documents onto the screen.
One signature.
Then another.
The final page appeared.
I signed without hesitation.
The mansion on Redwood Crest Drive officially belonged to someone else.
By sunset, the funds had cleared.
The locks, alarm codes, and ownership records were transferred to Elliot.
The house Brent believed he had conquered...
No longer existed for him.
Three days later...
My phone rang.
Brent.
I answered on speaker while Molly quietly fed Ivy.
"Baby!"
His voice was cheerful.
"We're flying home tonight."
"My mother wants you to make her lemon chicken tomorrow."
I said nothing.
He laughed.
"You still mad?"
"I told you that little lesson would help you appreciate everything I do."
I finally spoke.
"Enjoy your flight."
There was a pause.
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
May you like
"You should knock before you try to enter."
Then I hung up.
