Part 2: The Boy Who Never Smiled

The housekeeper, Margaret Collins, led Elena through endless marble hallways that seemed more like a museum than a family home.
"Your responsibility is simple," Margaret said without looking back. "Take care of Master Ethan. Follow his schedule. Stay out of the family's affairs."
Elena nodded.
"I understand."
Margaret stopped walking.
"No," she replied quietly. "You don't."
She opened the nursery door.
The room was breathtaking.
Sunlight spilled across handcrafted wooden toys, shelves filled with rare books, and walls painted with forests and stars. Every luxury imaginable surrounded the little boy sitting silently beside the window.
Eight-year-old Ethan Hawthorne never looked up.
He simply stared outside.
His expensive clothes were perfectly pressed.
His dark hair was neatly combed.
But his eyes...
His eyes carried the sadness of someone much older.
"Ethan," Margaret announced. "Your new nanny."
No response.
Margaret sighed.
"He hasn't spoken to any nanny in almost two years."
She left.
The heavy door clicked shut.
For several minutes, Elena remained standing.
Then she walked toward the boy.
"Hi."
Silence.
"My name is Elena."
Nothing.
She noticed dozens of untouched toys scattered around the room.
Every item looked brand new.
Every gift had been ignored.
Instead, Ethan continued watching the harbor below.
"What are you looking at?" she asked softly.
For the first time...
He spoke.
"Freedom."
The single word sent a chill through her body.
Children his age didn't usually answer that way.
Elena sat beside him without another question.
Together they watched sailboats drift across the water.
Several minutes passed.
Finally Ethan whispered,
"You're nice."
"Thank you."
"That means you won't stay."
Elena frowned.
"What makes you think that?"
"They all leave."
Before she could respond, footsteps echoed through the hallway.
The nursery door swung open.
A sharply dressed woman entered without knocking.
Victoria Hawthorne.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
Cold.
She barely glanced at her son.
Instead, she studied Elena.
"So you're the replacement."
"Yes, ma'am."
Victoria walked slowly around the room.
"I've hired twelve nannies."
She stopped directly in front of Elena.
"None lasted longer than three months."
"I intend to."
Victoria smiled.
It wasn't a warm smile.
"We'll see."
Without saying goodbye to Ethan, she walked out.
The little boy never turned around.
He acted as though his own mother had never entered the room.
That silence told Elena far more than words ever could.
Later that evening, while helping Ethan prepare for bed, she noticed faint bruises around his wrist.
"They'll disappear," Ethan whispered before she even asked.
"How did this happen?"
"I wasn't supposed to open the basement door."
Elena froze.
"What basement?"
The boy immediately looked frightened.
He covered his mouth.
"I wasn't supposed to tell anyone."

Outside the nursery...
Someone was listening.
