CHAPTER 12 — THE HEIR THEY COULDN’T CONTROL

The countdown continued.
14:12.
I stared at the screen.
Every second felt like a knife.
“Where did they take them?” I demanded.
Nobody answered.
Daniel slammed his fist against the security console.
“Find the cameras.”
Alejandro was already working.
“I'm trying.”
“Try faster!”
“I know!”
I turned toward the corridor.
There had to be another way.
Then I noticed something on the floor.
A tiny silver bracelet.
I picked it up.
The engraving was almost invisible.
E.R.
My son's initials.
I closed my fist around it.
“He left this.”
Daniel looked at me.
“How do you know?”
“Because he always grabs things.”
I remembered the first time I had held him.
His tiny fingers had wrapped around mine.
He had held my necklace so tightly that the chain had left a red mark on his palm.
I looked around.
“My necklace.”
“What?”
I touched my neck.
The pendant my mother had given me was gone.
I suddenly understood.
“He took it.”
Daniel frowned.
“Your son?”
I nodded.
“He had it.”
Alejandro looked at the security system.
“Wait.”
He connected the pendant's tracking signal to the console.
A red dot appeared.
LEVEL B9.
Daniel stared.
“There is no B9.”
Alejandro shook his head.
“Not on the official plans.”
“Then what is it?”
“A secret level.”
The countdown continued.
11:48.
We ran.
At the end of the corridor was a service elevator.
Alejandro forced open the control panel.
Behind it was a second keypad.
He entered the code.
Nothing.
I looked at the pendant.
A small symbol had appeared on its surface.
A half-moon.
I pressed it against the keypad.
The elevator doors opened.
Daniel stared.
“How did you know?”
“I didn't.”
We entered.
The doors closed.
The elevator began descending.
B8.
B9.
Then the display disappeared.
The elevator stopped.
The doors opened.
I stepped into darkness.
A single light flickered overhead.
Then another.
Then another.
A long underground laboratory appeared.
Rows of medical equipment.
Old files.
Glass chambers.
Photographs.
And dozens of children's records.
I walked toward the nearest cabinet.
The first file had a name.
RIVERA, EMILY — SUBJECT 001.
My blood froze.
“Subject?”
Daniel grabbed the file.
He opened it.
His face became pale.
“What?”
He couldn't speak.
I took the papers.
The first page read:
PROJECT CROWN
Objective: Create a genetically compatible heir capable of controlling the Castillo Trust.
I stared at the words.
“Genetically compatible?”
Daniel turned another page.
There were medical records from my pregnancy.
My blood tests.
Ultrasounds.
Even photographs.
Someone had monitored me before I knew I was being watched.
I found a page marked:
TWIN DEVELOPMENT.
My hands shook.
“There.”
Daniel looked.
The file listed two embryos.
A — Daniel Castillo genetic sequence.
B — Alejandro Castillo genetic sequence.
I looked at Alejandro.
He went completely still.
“They used both of us.”
Daniel's face hardened.
“But Emily carried them.”
I stared at the file.
“Why me?”
A voice answered from behind us.
“Because you're the only woman who could carry both without rejecting either.”
We turned.
Victoria stepped into the light.
She wasn't holding a gun.
She didn't need one.
Behind her stood six armed men.
And beside them...
my mother.
My mother was crying.
“Emily…”
I stared at her.
“You knew.”
She nodded.
“I knew everything.”
“You let them experiment on me.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I didn't.”
Victoria smiled.
“She did.”
My mother turned toward her.
“Don't.”
Victoria laughed.
“She signed the original agreement.”
I looked at my mother.
“Is that true?”
My mother couldn't look at me.
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“You signed away my children?”
“I signed to save your life.”
“You signed me into a laboratory!”
“I didn't know what they would do.”
“You should have.”
She cried.
“I was desperate.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“Your mother made one mistake.”
“What?”
“She believed she could control the Board.”
My mother looked at Victoria.
“You promised me Emily would be safe.”
Victoria smiled.
“I lied.”
I felt something inside me break.
All my life, I had believed my family was destroyed by tragedy.
It wasn't tragedy.
It was a plan.
A carefully designed plan.
And I had been the centerpiece.
I looked at Victoria.
“Where are my sons?”
“Safe.”
“Bring them to me.”
“Not yet.”
I stepped forward.
Victoria raised one hand.
The guards aimed their weapons.
Daniel moved beside me.
“Don't.”
Victoria looked at him.
“You've always been reckless.”
“And you've always been a monster.”
She smiled.
“Yet here we are.”
I looked at the countdown.
08:06.
“What happens at midnight?”
Victoria's smile disappeared.
“The Board activates the trust.”
“And?”
“One child becomes heir.”
I stared at her.
“And the other?”
She didn't answer.
I understood.
“No.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You won't kill him.”
Victoria looked at him.
“You have no idea what the Board is capable of.”
Alejandro raised his weapon.
“Then we'll stop them.”
Victoria laughed.
“There are already people waiting outside this building.”
She pointed toward the ceiling.
“Police.”
Then toward the corridor.
“Federal agents.”
Then toward us.
“Judges.”
She smiled.
“They all answer to the same people.”
I looked at my mother.
“Who sits on the Board?”
She whispered:
“Seven people.”
“Names.”
She hesitated.
Victoria answered for her.
“The Castillo family attorney.”
“The bank president.”
“The chairman of the foundation.”
“The chief justice.”
“The head of security.”
“The family physician.”
“And the seventh?”
Victoria looked at me.
“Your father.”
I turned toward my father.
He stood behind the glass.
He looked exhausted.
“You?”
He nodded.
“I joined to destroy them from inside.”
Victoria laughed.
“You failed.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I was waiting for you.”
I stared.
“For me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the Board can only be destroyed by someone they cannot control.”
He looked at my son.
“You.”
Victoria's face changed.
“What did you do?”
My father smiled.
“I changed the trust.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“You couldn't.”
“I did.”
He pointed toward me.
“The trust no longer recognizes a male heir.”
Victoria froze.
“It recognizes the mother.”
Silence.
My father continued.
“Emily is the controlling heir.”
Victoria whispered:
“No.”
My father nodded.
“Your entire plan was built on an outdated covenant.”
I looked at him.
“You changed it?”
“Your grandfather changed it before he died.”
Victoria turned pale.
“That's impossible.”
My father smiled.
“Your grandfather hated you.”
Victoria's face twisted with rage.
“You're lying.”
“Then activate the trust.”
She froze.
My father looked at me.
“Put your hand on the biometric panel.”
I stepped toward it.
Victoria shouted:
“Stop her!”
The guards raised their weapons.
Daniel moved in front of me.
Alejandro did the same.
My mother suddenly stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Victoria turned.
“What?”
My mother looked at me.
“Your grandfather left one final instruction.”
“What?”
“He said the trust could only be activated by the mother who lost everything.”
I stared at her.
“Me?”
She nodded.
“You.”
I placed my hand on the biometric panel.
The machine scanned my palm.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
A second screen appeared.
GENETIC MATCH: 100%.
Then another.
PRIMARY HEIR: EMILY RIVERA-CASTILLO.
Victoria screamed.
“No!”
The laboratory lights turned red.
Every computer began shutting down.
The Board's files started deleting.
Victoria lunged toward me.
Daniel grabbed her.
She fought violently.
“You stupid girl!”
I looked at her.
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“I'm not stupid.”
I pointed at the screen.
“I was just kept powerless.”
The doors suddenly opened.
Two nurses rushed inside.
Each carried a baby.
My heart stopped.
One was Elias.
The other was his twin.
I ran toward them.
The nurse handed me Elias.
I pulled him against my chest.
He immediately stopped crying.
Daniel touched his head.
“Our son.”
I reached for the other baby.
Alejandro took him.
His face filled with emotion.
“My boy.”
For the first time, both children were safe.
Together.
But Victoria wasn't finished.
She pulled a hidden knife from her sleeve.
She lunged toward me.
My father shouted:
“Emily!”
Daniel turned.
Too late.
The blade came toward me.
My mother stepped between us.
The knife struck her.
She collapsed.
“Mom!”
I caught her.
Victoria was tackled by Alejandro.
Daniel restrained her.
My mother lay in my arms.
Blood covered her dress.
“Mom…”
She touched my face.
“I’m sorry.”
I cried.
“Don't leave me.”
“I should have told you everything.”
“You still can.”
She smiled weakly.
“Your father…”
I looked toward him.
“He knows where the original birth records are.”
“Where?”
She whispered:
“Under our old house.”
I frowned.
“What records?”
“The original records of all three babies.”
I froze.
“All three?”
My mother nodded.
“There was never just one secret.”
“What does that mean?”
She looked toward Alejandro.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
“The third child…”
She struggled to breathe.
“…was born before you.”
I stared.
“What?”
My mother closed her eyes.
“The child Victoria called her miracle baby…”
She whispered:
“Wasn't the child she wanted.”
My blood ran cold.
“Then who is he?”
My mother looked at me one final time.
“Your brother.”
Her eyes closed.
“Mom!”
I shook her.
“Mom!”
Nothing.
Daniel knelt beside me.
“She fainted.”
I held her tighter.
But then I noticed something.
Her hand was still gripping mine.
Inside her palm was a tiny key.
A key engraved with one word:
HOME.
I looked at my father.
“What does this open?”
He stared at the key.
His expression became terrified.
“The house.”
“What house?”
He whispered:
“Your childhood home.”
I looked at the two babies.
Then at Victoria.
Then at the key.
The Castillo empire had fallen into my hands.
But I finally understood.
The inheritance had never been the real secret.
The children were.
And somewhere beneath the house where I grew up…
was the truth about a child my family had erased from history.
May you like
My missing brother.
And if he was still alive, he could change everything.
