CHAPTER 4 — THE BETRAYAL THEY BURIED FOR TWENTY-TWO YEARS

The hospital lights flickered red.

Then the emergency siren began screaming.

Henry stood in the corridor with his fists raised.

Beside him were Derek, Marcus, Thomas, and Emily.

At the other end of the hallway, armed men appeared from the darkness.

One.

Two.

Five.

Then more.

Derek swallowed.

"How many?"

Thomas looked down the corridor.

"Enough."

Henry didn't move.

"Stay behind me."

Derek shook his head.

"We already had this conversation."

Henry glanced at him.

"You still don't understand."

Derek raised his gloves.

"I understand perfectly."

The first man charged.

Henry stepped forward.

His right hand struck the attacker's shoulder.

The man's body spun sideways.

Marcus caught him and slammed him against the wall.

Another attacker came from behind.

Derek saw him.

"Henry!"

Henry ducked.

Derek threw a punch.

The attacker staggered backward.

Henry looked at Derek.

"Better."

Derek smiled.

"You're welcome."

Then three more rushed them.

Thomas stepped forward.

For an older man, he moved surprisingly well.

He slipped one punch.

Blocked another.

Then swept the attacker's legs.

Marcus stared at him.

"You still fight."

Thomas looked at his brother.

"Some things never leave you."

They moved down the corridor.

Emily stayed behind Henry.

She clutched the tiny ledger hidden inside the pendant.

Suddenly—

A gunshot.

Henry spun.

Thomas dropped to one knee.

"Thomas!"

Marcus rushed toward him.

Blood appeared on Thomas's shoulder.

"I'm fine."

Marcus looked furious.

"You've been alive for twenty-two years and you're already getting shot?"

Thomas laughed despite the pain.

"Nice to see you too."

Henry looked toward the stairwell.

The shooter was gone.

"Move."

They reached an old surgical wing.

Henry kicked open a storage room.

"Inside."

Everyone entered.

Marcus shut the door.

Derek leaned against the wall.

"Now what?"

Henry listened.

Footsteps passed outside.

Then silence.

Emily whispered,

"We can't stay here."

Henry looked at her.

"You're right."

She stared at him.

"There's another way out."

"Where?"

"The morgue."

Marcus frowned.

"The morgue?"

Emily nodded.

"I've been here before."

Henry looked at her.

"When?"

"Three years ago."

He froze.

"You came here?"

Emily nodded.

"To find information about my mother."

Henry's expression changed.

"You knew she was alive?"

"Not then."

Emily looked down.

"I found records."

"What records?"

"Someone had been paying for her medical care."

Henry stared.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Thomas stepped closer.

"Kane?"

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Henry frowned.

"Then who?"

Emily looked at him.

"Someone named Richard Vale."

Henry stopped breathing.

Marcus noticed.

"That's your old manager."

Henry nodded slowly.

"He died."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

She reached into her jacket.

She pulled out an old envelope.

Henry stared at it.

"Where did you get that?"

"From my mother's things."

He took it.

His hands trembled.

The envelope was old.

Yellowed.

But the handwriting was unmistakable.

Richard Vale.

Henry opened it.

Inside was a single page.

He read the first line.

Then stopped.

Derek asked,

"What does it say?"

Henry didn't answer.

Marcus took the paper.

His eyes widened.

"What?"

Henry whispered,

"He knew."

"Who?"

"Richard."

Henry stared at the page.

"He knew Sarah survived."

Derek frowned.

"And?"

"He knew Emily survived."

Emily stepped forward.

"What?"

Henry looked at her.

"Richard found you."

Emily's face went pale.

"When?"

"After the fire."

Henry read the rest.

Richard had written everything.

The fire had been staged.

Sarah had escaped.

Emily had been taken.

Samuel had been moved to another hospital.

And Richard had helped them disappear.

Henry stared at the final sentence.

I did it because Kane was going to kill all three of you.

Then another line:

But I could not protect you forever.

Henry lowered the letter.

Marcus whispered,

"So Richard wasn't working for Kane."

Thomas shook his head.

"He was."

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas continued.

"At first."

Henry stared.

"What do you mean?"

Thomas sighed.

"Richard worked for Kane."

"Then why help us?"

"Because he realized what Kane was doing."

Thomas looked at Henry.

"Richard tried to expose him."

Henry shook his head.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

"Because Kane had his daughter."

Henry's face hardened.

"He had a daughter?"

Thomas nodded.

"Claire."

Henry closed his eyes.

Richard had never told him.

Not once.

For twenty-two years, Henry had believed Richard betrayed him.

But the truth was more complicated.

Richard had been trapped.

Like everyone else.

Emily touched Henry's arm.

"There's more."

Henry looked at her.

"My mother told me something before she died."

"What?"

"She said Richard saved me."

Henry stared.

"Saved you from what?"

Emily looked down.

"From Kane."

She hesitated.

"But she also said Richard made one terrible mistake."

Henry waited.

"He trusted someone."

"Who?"

Emily looked at Thomas.

Thomas's face became pale.

Henry noticed.

"Thomas?"

Thomas didn't answer.

Henry stepped closer.

"What did Richard do?"

Thomas whispered,

"He told Kane where Samuel was."

Silence.

Henry's face hardened.

"What?"

Thomas looked at him.

"Richard tried to negotiate."

"For Samuel?"

"Yes."

"Then Kane found him."

Henry's fists tightened.

"And?"

Thomas lowered his eyes.

"Kane took Samuel."

Derek stepped forward.

"Where?"

Thomas looked at him.

"An underground facility outside Dallas."

Derek's expression changed.

"Is he still there?"

"No."

"Where is he?"

Thomas didn't answer.

Derek grabbed his shirt.

"Where is my father?"

Thomas looked into his eyes.

"He escaped."

"When?"

"Seven years ago."

Derek froze.

"He escaped?"

Thomas nodded.

"He's been hiding ever since."

"Where?"

"We don't know."

Derek released him.

Henry suddenly looked at Emily.

"What does the ledger say?"

Emily opened the pendant.

She removed the tiny paper.

The writing was microscopic.

Marcus took out his phone and photographed it.

He zoomed in.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Fight results.

Then something caught Henry's attention.

A name.

HENRY BLACKWOOD

Beside it:

FINAL PAYMENT — $5,000,000

Henry stared.

"I never took this."

Marcus scrolled.

"There's another entry."

Henry leaned closer.

PAYMENT ACCEPTED.

Derek looked at him.

"You were paid?"

"No."

Marcus continued.

"Five million dollars transferred to an account."

Henry shook his head.

"I never had an account like that."

Thomas stared at the page.

"Then someone used your identity."

Henry's expression darkened.

"Who?"

Marcus scrolled further.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

Henry asked,

"What?"

Marcus slowly turned the phone around.

The recipient name wasn't Henry.

It was—

RICHARD VALE.

Henry stared.

"Richard took the money."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

Marcus looked at him.

"That's what the ledger says."

Thomas stepped closer.

"Look at the date."

They did.

The payment was made three days before the championship fight.

Henry whispered,

"Richard betrayed me."

Emily shook her head.

"Not necessarily."

Henry looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because the account was closed the same day."

Marcus checked.

She was right.

Five million dollars entered the account.

Then five million dollars left.

The destination account belonged to—

SARAH BLACKWOOD.

Henry stopped breathing.

"My wife."

Emily nodded.

"Richard sent the money to her."

Henry stared at the screen.

"Why?"

Thomas answered.

"Because Sarah needed surgery."

Henry looked at him.

"What surgery?"

Thomas's expression became grim.

"The fire damaged her lungs."

Henry closed his eyes.

She had survived.

She had been sick.

And he had spent twenty-two years believing she was dead.

Suddenly—

a loud metallic crash came from outside.

Everyone froze.

The door handle began moving.

Henry raised his hands.

The door opened.

A man stepped inside.

Richard Vale.

Older.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

But alive.

Henry stared at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Henry whispered,

"You're dead."

Richard smiled sadly.

"So are you."

Henry moved forward.

He grabbed Richard by the collar.

"You let me believe my family was dead."

Richard didn't resist.

"I know."

"You let me hate you."

"I know."

"You disappeared."

"I had to."

Henry shoved him against the wall.

"You lied to me."

Richard looked at him.

"Yes."

Henry's fist tightened.

"Why?"

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

"Because if I told you the truth, Kane would have killed them."

Henry stared.

"You could have told me."

"No."

"You could have found me."

"I did."

Henry froze.

"What?"

Richard nodded.

"I watched you."

"For how long?"

"Twenty-two years."

Henry stepped backward.

"Every year?"

"Every year."

"Then why didn't you come?"

Richard looked at Emily.

"Because I promised your mother."

Emily stared.

"My mother knew you were alive?"

Richard nodded.

"She knew."

Henry whispered,

"Where is she?"

Richard looked at him.

"Alive."

Henry's breath caught.

"Where?"

"She's in Texas."

"Take me to her."

Richard shook his head.

"Not yet."

Henry's expression hardened.

"Why?"

"Because Kane is watching."

Richard pulled a small device from his pocket.

"A tracker."

He placed it on the table.

"Kane has been tracking me."

Thomas looked at it.

"Then why come here?"

Richard smiled.

"Because I knew Henry would come."

Henry stared.

"How?"

Richard looked at Emily.

"Because your daughter finally found the truth."

Emily stepped forward.

"What truth?"

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out another photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Henry looked down.

His face changed.

It was Sarah.

Older.

But alive.

She sat in a wheelchair outside a small house.

Henry touched the photograph.

"Where is this?"

"Near Austin."

"Take me there."

Richard shook his head.

"First, you need to know what Kane really wants."

Henry looked up.

"The ledger."

"No."

Richard's voice was serious.

"The ledger is worthless."

Marcus frowned.

"Then why chase it?"

"Because Kane wants you to think it's about money."

Richard opened the ledger.

He pointed to the final page.

Henry read it.

His expression changed.

There was one name at the bottom.

A name he had never expected.

VICTOR KANE — BIOLOGICAL FATHER OF EMILY BLACKWOOD

Emily stared.

"What?"

Henry's face went pale.

"No."

Richard nodded.

"It's true."

Emily shook her head.

"You're lying."

Richard looked at her.

"Your mother never told you."

Henry stepped forward.

"Explain."

Richard sighed.

"Before you married Sarah, she was involved with Kane."

Henry stared.

"That's impossible."

"She was young."

"She hated him."

"Later."

Richard continued.

"Sarah discovered what Kane was doing."

"Then why was Emily his daughter?"

Richard looked at Emily.

"Because Kane was your biological father."

Emily's face went blank.

Derek stared at her.

Marcus didn't speak.

Henry looked like someone had punched him.

Richard continued.

"Sarah left Kane when she discovered she was pregnant."

Henry shook his head.

"I raised her."

"Yes."

"She's my daughter."

Richard nodded.

"She is."

Henry looked confused.

Richard said,

"Blood doesn't make a father."

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"You knew?"

Henry looked at her.

"I knew nothing."

Richard stepped forward.

"Kane has spent twenty-two years trying to claim you."

Emily shook her head.

"Why?"

"Because you're the only person who can legally expose him."

"How?"

Richard pointed toward the ledger.

"Your birth records were falsified."

Emily stared.

"What does that have to do with Kane?"

"Everything."

Richard took out another document.

"The ledger contains financial crimes."

He placed the document beside it.

"This contains something far more dangerous."

Henry picked it up.

DNA records.

Medical records.

Birth certificates.

Bank transfers.

Court documents.

And one final page.

A signed confession.

Victor Kane's signature.

Richard whispered,

"Emily is the legal heir to Kane's entire empire."

Everyone stared.

Emily stepped backward.

"No."

Richard nodded.

"Kane doesn't want to kill you."

"Then what does he want?"

"He wants you alive."

"Why?"

"Because if you die before signing the inheritance transfer..."

Richard looked at Henry.

"...the empire goes to charity."

Emily's eyes widened.

Henry understood.

"Kane wants her to sign everything over."

Richard nodded.

"And if she refuses?"

Richard looked toward the door.

"Then he will use your family."

A slow clap echoed from the hallway.

Everyone froze.

Victor Kane stepped into view.

No mask.

No guards.

Just a black suit and a calm smile.

"Very good, Richard."

Henry moved in front of Emily.

Kane looked at him.

"You've aged."

Henry's eyes burned.

"You haven't changed."

Kane smiled.

"That's because I always knew how this would end."

He looked at Emily.

"Come home."

Emily shook her head.

"You are not my father."

Kane's smile disappeared.

"No."

He looked at Henry.

"But I am the reason you lost her."

Henry stepped forward.

Kane raised one hand.

Behind him, men appeared.

But Kane didn't order them to attack.

Instead, he pulled out a phone.

He pressed a button.

A live video appeared.

Sarah.

Sitting in a wheelchair.

Alive.

Terrified.

A gunman stood behind her.

Henry's face collapsed.

"Sarah."

Kane smiled.

"Come with me."

Henry stared at the screen.

"If you hurt her—"

"I won't."

Kane looked at Emily.

"Not if you give me what I want."

Emily clutched the ledger.

"What do you want?"

Kane answered,

"The original documents."

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Kane sighed.

"Then I suppose your mother dies."

Henry stepped forward.

Emily grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

Kane smiled.

"Tomorrow morning."

He turned.

"Bring the ledger."

Then he looked at Henry.

"And come alone."

Henry stared.

Kane smiled.

"Because if anyone else follows you..."

He held up the phone.

The image of Sarah filled the screen.

"...she dies."

Kane walked away.

The doors closed.

Silence.

Derek looked at Henry.

"You're not going alone."

Henry stared at him.

"I have to."

Derek shook his head.

"No."

Henry looked at him.

Derek's voice became firm.

"You spent twenty-two years thinking you had nobody."

He raised his gloves.

"Now you have us."

Marcus stepped beside him.

Thomas joined them.

Emily stood behind Henry.

Richard looked at the group.

For the first time in twenty-two years, Henry wasn't alone.

He looked at his daughter.

Then at Derek.

Then at Marcus.

And finally at Thomas.

Henry smiled.

"Then we finish it."

Richard shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Richard's face was terrified.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

Richard pointed toward the photograph of Sarah.

"That's not the real Sarah."

Henry froze.

Richard whispered,

"Kane already moved her."

Henry stared.

"Where?"

Richard swallowed.

"The place where he kept Samuel."

Derek's face changed.

"The underground facility."

Richard nodded.

"And there's something else."

"What?"

Richard looked at Henry.

"Samuel isn't the only prisoner."

Henry's eyes narrowed.

"Who else?"

Richard answered quietly.

"Claire."

His own daughter.

The daughter he had believed dead.

Richard's face crumpled.

"Kane has been keeping her alive for twenty-two years."

The room fell silent.

And Henry suddenly understood.

The final battle wasn't about a ledger.

It wasn't about money.

It wasn't even about revenge.

It was about the families Kane had destroyed—

and the people who had survived long enough to fight back.

Henry picked up the photograph.

Then he looked at everyone.

"Tomorrow night..."

He paused.

"...we bring them all home."

But somewhere beneath the city, Victor Kane stood beside another monitor.

On the screen was Emily.

On another was Derek.

On another was Henry.

Kane smiled.

Then he opened a final file.

Inside was a photograph of a little girl.

Emily.

Eight years old.

Standing beside a man Henry had never seen.

Kane whispered,

"Let them come."

He closed the folder.

"Because none of them knows who the real traitor is."

The camera slowly moved closer to the photograph.

HENRY BLACKWOOD WAS NEVER THE HERO.
