Chapter 3 - The Tape

The cassette was almost fifty years old.

The recording quality was terrible.

Static filled the small room.

Then a man's voice emerged.

Michael Carter.

Young.

Exhausted.

Furious.

“If anyone finds this recording, understand one thing.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

His voice continued.

“Evelyn did not cheat.”

Her eyes opened.

Daniel watched her carefully.

Michael continued.

“They changed her medical records.”

Static.

A pause.

Then:

“They changed the qualification scores.”

Another pause.

“And they did it because Evelyn discovered the truth.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“What truth?”

The tape crackled.

Michael spoke again.

“There are athletes being deliberately pushed out of competitions.”

Evelyn whispered:

“Keep playing.”

The recording continued.

“Certain sponsors are demanding specific finalists. Judges are being pressured. Scores are being adjusted.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“This was bigger than Evelyn.”

“Yes,” Evelyn said.

Michael continued.

“I tried to report it.”

A man's voice could be heard faintly in the background.

Then another.

“You have one chance to walk away.”

Michael answered:

“No.”

The tape ended.

Silence.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Who was that man?”

“I don't know.”

“But you heard him.”

“I was outside the room.”

Daniel stared.

“You were there?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you testify?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Because the next morning, my mother received a threat.”

Daniel said nothing.

“They told us if I spoke, my family would lose everything.”

“You were sixteen.”

“I know.”

“And you carried this for forty-nine years?”

“I carried the shame they gave me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You should never have been ashamed.”

Evelyn smiled bitterly.

“Tell that to a sixteen-year-old girl after the entire country calls her a cheat.”

Meanwhile, the championship reached its final night.

Ava Mitchell was competing for the title.

But something had changed.

She no longer cared only about winning.

She wanted to know the truth.

She confronted a former federation employee who had agreed to meet her privately.

The woman handed Ava a folder.

“Don't let anyone know I gave you this.”

Inside were score sheets from Evelyn's final competition.

Ava compared them with the official archive.

The numbers were different.

Someone had changed them.

One judge's score had been altered by almost an entire point.

Enough to eliminate Evelyn.

Ava took photographs.

Then she heard footsteps.

She turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

He was wearing a federation credential.

“You shouldn't be here.”

Ava stepped back.

“Who are you?”

He smiled.

“Someone trying to protect you.”

Ava ran.

She reached the arena and found Evelyn.

“Someone changed your scores.”

Evelyn stared at the folder.

“You found it.”

Ava nodded.

“They're still doing it.”

Evelyn looked toward the judges' desk.

Her expression became cold.

“Then tonight isn't about me.”

Ava didn't understand.

“Then what is it about?”

“Whether this sport belongs to the athletes.”

The final competition began.

Ava performed first.

Her routine was nearly perfect.

Then the scores appeared.

Suspiciously low.

The crowd booed.

Ava looked toward the judges.

Daniel was staring at the score screen.

He knew immediately.

The manipulation was happening again.

Only this time, someone was watching.

Daniel stood.

“Stop the competition.”

The arena erupted.

The federation director approached.

“You cannot do that.”

Daniel held up the old documents.

“I can.”

The director's face changed.

“You don't know what you're talking about.”

Daniel looked toward the cameras.

“Then let's show everyone.”

The giant screen behind him displayed the original score sheets.

Then the altered versions.

The crowd gasped.

The arena descended into chaos.

Security rushed forward.

The federation director shouted for the screens to be shut down.

But it was too late.

Millions of viewers were watching the livestream.

The evidence was already public.

Then Evelyn stepped onto the floor.

She didn't ask for permission.

She walked directly toward the judges' table.

The same table where she had stood forty-nine years earlier.

The federation director looked at her.

“You have no authority here.”

Evelyn smiled.

“No.”

She raised the microphone.

“But the truth does.”

The audience fell silent.

She told them everything.

The accusation.

The altered records.

The threats.

Her husband's investigation.

The years of silence.

The humiliation.

And finally, the reason she had returned.

“I didn't come here because I wanted another medal.”

Her voice shook.

“I came because there are young girls standing behind me who deserve to believe that the scoreboard tells the truth.”

Ava began crying.

Not from sadness.

From relief.

Then Daniel stepped beside Evelyn.

And one by one, other former athletes came forward.

They had kept their own evidence.

Their own stories.

Their own scars.

For the first time, the past was no longer buried.

But the final secret had not yet been revealed.

Daniel turned toward Evelyn.

“There is one more file.”

“What file?”

“Your original medical report.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Where is it?”

“In the archive.”

“Then let's see it.”

They opened the file.

The original laboratory result was clear.

Evelyn had never failed the test.

She had been clean.

The entire scandal had been fabricated.

And the person who had ordered it was not the official everyone suspected.

It was someone far more powerful.

May you like

Someone still alive.

Someone sitting in the arena.
