CHAPTER 12 — THE ADMIRAL'S IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE

The call ended.
But Admiral Reed's final words remained.
"No. I didn't kill your mother."
A pause.
"But I know who did."
The silence inside the vault became unbearable.
Everyone was watching me.
My father.
My brother.
Edward Whitmore.
Richard Vale.
Each one carrying a different version of the truth.
Each one hiding something.
And now...
The man I believed was my last ally had become another question.
I slowly lowered my phone.
Edward watched me carefully.
"You asked him."
I looked at him.
"How did you know?"
"Because Eleanor taught you something."
"What?"
"Never accuse someone without giving them the chance to answer."
I hated that he sounded like my mother.
Everyone who had hurt me seemed to carry pieces of her memory.
"You're trying to make me doubt him."
Edward didn't deny it.
"I'm trying to make you see clearly."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You're trying to make me trust you."
A faint smile appeared.
"And that is why you survived."
Richard Vale stepped forward.
"Enough."
His voice was no longer calm.
No longer polished.
The mask was slipping.
"This family has spent enough time playing detective."
I looked at him.
"Afraid the truth is finally catching up?"
His eyes narrowed.
"You have no idea what you're dealing with."
I smiled coldly.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
A pause.
"Usually right before they lose."
For a moment...
Nobody spoke.
Then Edward looked at Richard.
"You were never supposed to reveal yourself."
Richard's expression changed.
"And you were never supposed to come back."
The two men stared at each other.
And suddenly I understood.
They weren't allies anymore.
They were enemies.
"You've been fighting each other."
Edward nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because power always creates enemies."
He looked toward Richard.
"Richard believed he could control Meridian."
A pause.
"He was wrong."
Richard laughed.
"Still arrogant after all these years."
Edward's eyes became cold.
"You confuse patience with weakness."
Then the lights went out.
Again.
But this time...
Nobody panicked.
Everyone knew.
Someone was coming.
A second later, emergency lights activated.
And the vault doors slammed shut.
Locked.
My father rushed toward the control panel.
"Nobody leaves."
He tried entering codes.
Nothing.
Richard smiled.
"That's unfortunate."
I looked at him.
"You did this?"
"No."
His smile disappeared.
"Someone else did."
A voice came from the speakers.
Not Edward.
Not Richard.
Not my father.
A voice I recognized.
"Celeste."
My heart stopped.
Admiral Reed.
Everyone looked at the speakers.
My father whispered:
"Jonathan."
The admiral's voice continued.
"I know you found the file."
I stepped closer.
"Admiral..."
My voice was cold.
"Are you watching us?"
A pause.
"Yes."
The room changed.
My trust collapsed a little more.
"You tracked me?"
"I protected you."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You monitored me."
Silence.
Because he knew I was right.
"Celeste, listen to me."
"No."
My anger finally broke through.
"I listened to everyone."
"My father."
"Richard."
"Edward."
"Everyone had an explanation."
Everyone claimed they were protecting me."
"But somehow..."
"Every person who protected me destroyed something."
The admiral's voice softened.
"I deserve that."
That surprised me.
He didn't defend himself.
"Then tell me the truth."
A long silence.
Finally:
"I was involved."
My stomach tightened.
Edward closed his eyes.
Richard smiled.
My father looked away.
Everyone already knew.
Everyone except me.
"What does involved mean?"
The admiral answered:
"I helped create Project Aurora."
The words echoed.
My entire body went still.
The man who saved me...
Had helped create the system my mother fought against.
"But I didn't create Meridian."
"Then why is your name in my mother's file?"
"Because Eleanor needed someone inside."
I frowned.
"What?"
"Your mother knew she couldn't fight them from outside."
"She needed information."
"She needed someone they trusted."
My mind raced.
"My mother trusted you."
"Yes."
"And you betrayed her."
"No."
His voice became emotional.
"That's what I have spent twelve years trying to prove."
The vault doors suddenly unlocked.
The screens changed.
A video began playing.
My mother.
Again.
But this time...
She wasn't alone.
She was sitting across from Admiral Reed.
The recording was old.
Their voices were clear.
Eleanor looked exhausted.
"Jonathan, if anything happens to me..."
The admiral looked at her.
"Don't say that."
"You know the risk."
"I can protect you."
"No."
My mother shook her head.
"You can't protect me."
A pause.
"You can protect Celeste."
I felt tears forming.
The video continued.
"The people behind Meridian are too powerful."
Eleanor whispered.
"They will destroy anyone who gets close."
Admiral Reed asked:
"Then why continue?"
My mother's answer was simple.
"Because my daughter deserves a world where truth matters."
The video stopped.
No one spoke.
I looked at Admiral Reed's name on the document.
Then at the video.
Something didn't fit.
"Why would my mother write your name?"
Edward looked at me.
"Because she wanted you to question everything."
I turned.
"What?"
"Your mother knew the only way to expose Meridian was to make everyone suspicious."
Richard's face changed.
"What are you saying?"
Edward looked at him.
"That Eleanor planned her final move carefully."
I stepped closer.
"She knew people would find the files."
"Yes."
"She knew I would return."
"Yes."
"She knew everyone would look like a suspect."
Edward nodded.
"Exactly."
My mother had not left a trail of answers.
She had left a trail of questions.
Because questions forced people to reveal themselves.
Then another file appeared.
A hidden recording.
The source:
ADMIRAL JONATHAN REED
Created:
Three days after Eleanor's death.
I opened it.
The admiral appeared on screen.
Younger.
Broken.
His uniform was stained.
His voice was shaking.
"If anyone finds this..."
"I failed."
My heart stopped.
"I couldn't save Eleanor."
"I couldn't stop them."
"But I discovered the truth."
He looked directly into the camera.
"The person who ordered Eleanor Whitmore's death..."
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then his voice returned.
"...was not Arthur Whitmore."
Everyone froze.
My father looked stunned.
The admiral continued:
"It wasn't Richard Vale."
"It wasn't Edward Whitmore."
A pause.
Then:
"It was someone closer."
The recording ended.
The vault became silent.
Then my father whispered:
"No..."
I turned toward him.
"You know."
He looked terrified.
"Who?"
He didn't answer.
"Father."
His eyes met mine.
And for the first time...
I saw something I never expected.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Regret.
"The person who killed your mother..."
My father's voice broke.
"Was someone I invited into our family."
My heart sank.
"Who?"
He closed his eyes.
And said the name.
The name that destroyed everything.
"Victoria."
My sister.
The perfect daughter.
The golden child.
The woman who laughed when she saw my scars.
The person I had trusted least...
And somehow...
The person I had never suspected.
At that exact moment, every screen in the vault activated.
A live camera feed appeared.
Victoria was standing inside the mansion.
Holding a gun.
Looking directly into the camera.
She smiled.
"Hello, Celeste."
The room froze.
"I was wondering when you would finally find the truth."
Her smile widened.
"But unfortunately..."
"You found it too late."
The feed cut.
And the last message appeared:
THE FINAL KEY BELONGS TO THE PERSON WHO HAS NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE.
Everyone looked at me.
Because they all knew.
The war had changed.
May you like
It was no longer about uncovering the past.
It was about surviving the present.
