Chapter 3: The Children Speak

Chapter 3: The Children Speak
The principal immediately called Tommy and his mother into the office.
Tommy entered holding his mother's hand.
A purple bruise had already formed behind his ear.
His mother looked exhausted.
"I came as soon as I got the call," she said.
The principal quietly played the video again.
By the end, Tommy's mother was crying.
She hugged Lily before anyone could stop her.
"You protected my son."
Lily looked confused.
"I just didn't want him to get hurt."
Tommy finally found his voice.
"It wasn't the first time."
Everyone looked at him.
He explained that Damian had bullied him for nearly three months.
Taking his lunch.
Breaking his pencils.
Calling him names.
Threatening him if he ever told a teacher.
Several children had witnessed it.
None had spoken.
Because they were afraid.
One by one, students were interviewed.
Every story matched Tommy's.
Damian had become skilled at bullying when adults weren't watching.
He knew exactly where the cameras had blind spots.
He knew when teachers were busy.
Until that day.
Until Lily interrupted him.
The principal looked devastated.
"We failed these children."
Officer Caldwell closed his report.
"There will be no charges against Lily."
Instead, a separate investigation began into the school's repeated failure to recognize the bullying.
For the first time that afternoon, I saw relief on my daughter's face.
She reached into her backpack.
Pulled out her smooth courage stone.
And quietly placed it into Tommy's hand.

"I think you need it more than I do."
Tommy smiled for the first time.
