CHAPTER ONE:The Plan No One Saw Coming

"What am I supposed to do?"

Khloe's voice was barely above a whisper.

She sat motionless across from Harrison's desk, both hands wrapped protectively around the life growing inside her. The city lights beyond the glass walls glittered across Manhattan, but she couldn't see them.

All she could see was the future Richard had already planned without her.

A divorce.

Financial ruin.

Another woman raising the family she had spent six years fighting to build.

Harrison folded his hands.

His expression never changed.

"You do exactly what he expects."

Khloe frowned.

"What?"

"You smile."

She stared at him.

"You thank him for every bouquet he sends."

Another pause.

"You kiss him goodbye every morning."

Her confusion deepened.

"You never let him know you found those messages."

Silence settled over the office.

Finally she asked,

"You want me to pretend?"

"I want him comfortable."

Harrison slowly stood and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

"Dangerous people make mistakes only after they believe they've already won."

He turned.

"And Richard Harrington already believes he's untouchable."

Khloe looked down at the tablet resting on Harrison's desk.

Every screenshot.

Every bank transfer.

Every hotel receipt.

Every text message.

Proof.

Enough evidence to destroy a marriage.

But Harrison wasn't interested in destroying a marriage.

He wanted something much bigger.

"I've been investigating Harrington Commercial for eight months."

Khloe blinked.

"What?"

Harrison nodded once.

"I just didn't know my own sister was one of the victims."

Her heartbeat quickened.

"You've been investigating Richard?"

"Not Richard."

"Harrington Commercial."

He opened a thick black folder.

Inside were photographs.

Government documents.

Copies of construction permits.

Financial statements.

Newspaper clippings.

Khloe slowly reached for the top file.

Her hands began shaking.

"Unsafe materials?"

Harrison nodded.

"They substituted cheaper steel on three luxury developments."

She turned another page.

"Bribery?"

"Seven city officials."

Another page.

"Money laundering?"

"More than ninety million dollars."

She looked up in disbelief.

"My God..."

Harrison remained calm.

"Richard didn't become rich because he was brilliant."

"He became rich because he believed no one was watching."

A heavy silence filled the office.

Then Harrison added,

"But someone was."

Across the city...

Richard Harrington smiled as Vanessa poured champagne into crystal glasses overlooking the Philadelphia skyline.

She slipped behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist.

"When are you finally serving the divorce papers?"

Richard took a sip before answering.

"Soon."

"You've been saying 'soon' for months."

"I have to be careful."

Vanessa laughed.

"Careful?"

"She's pregnant."

Richard shrugged.

"So?"

"Judges love pregnant wives."

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"You really think she'll fight?"

Richard smiled.

"No."

"Khloe doesn't fight."

"She apologizes."

He looked toward the glittering skyline.

"She's spent six years trying to make me happy."

"She'll sign whatever I put in front of her."

Vanessa kissed his cheek.

"And then?"

Richard lifted his glass.

"We disappear."

She smiled.

"Our daughter grows up with everything."

Richard nodded.

"Our daughter."

Neither of them noticed the tiny green light blinking beneath the bookshelf.

Hidden inside an antique clock...

A camera quietly recorded every word.

The next morning...

Khloe cooked Richard's favorite breakfast.

Eggs.

Fresh fruit.

Coffee exactly the way he liked it.

Richard entered the kitchen looking surprised.

"You didn't have to do all this."

She smiled softly.

"I wanted to."

For a brief moment guilt flickered across his face.

Then it disappeared.

He kissed her forehead.

"I'll be late tonight."

She forced another smile.

"I figured."

He paused.

"You trust me?"

Her heart broke hearing the question.

But Harrison's voice echoed inside her mind.

Smile.

Keep him comfortable.

"I always have."

Richard relaxed immediately.

"You're amazing."

He walked away.

The moment the front door closed...

Khloe's smile disappeared.

A black SUV pulled quietly into the driveway.

Harrison stepped out.

"So?"

She handed him a tiny silver object.

Richard's smartwatch charger.

Harrison smiled.

"Perfect."

"What can you do with that?"

He placed it inside an evidence bag.

"Everything."

Three days later...

Vanessa entered Harrington Commercial headquarters wearing a white designer suit that turned every head.

Employees greeted her warmly.

Many already assumed she would become Mrs. Harrington.

She enjoyed every second of it.

Inside Richard's office, she closed the door.

"When are we announcing the baby?"

Richard smiled.

"After the shareholders' meeting."

She pouted.

"I hate hiding."

"You won't have to much longer."

She walked toward him.

"I picked out the nursery."

Richard laughed.

"You've already decorated it?"

"Of course."

She kissed him.

"Pink walls."

"Gold chandelier."

"A grand piano."

"Our little princess deserves perfection."

Richard wrapped his arms around her.

Behind the painting hanging across the room...

Another hidden camera captured everything.

That evening...

Harrison entered a secure conference room inside the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Six federal prosecutors waited.

The lead prosecutor slid a folder across the table.

"We've been after Harrington Commercial for four years."

Harrison nodded.

"I know."

"We never had enough."

"You do now."

He placed two hard drives onto the table.

One contained years of financial records.

The other...

Contained every recorded conversation Richard and Vanessa had unknowingly made over the past seventy-two hours.

The prosecutor looked up.

"What exactly are we charging?"

Harrison answered without emotion.

"Fraud."

"Money laundering."

"Wire fraud."

"Conspiracy."

"Tax evasion."

He paused.

"And attempted murder..."

Every head in the room lifted.

The prosecutor frowned.

"Attempted murder?"

Harrison looked toward the dark window.

"Because they're going to make a mistake."

"And when they do..."

"They won't just lose their company."

"They'll lose everything."

The following Friday...

Richard invited Khloe to meet him at the Montgomery County Courthouse.

He claimed the meeting involved "estate planning before the baby arrives."

Khloe arrived wearing her navy maternity dress.

Exactly the dress Richard had once said made her look beautiful.

She spotted him at the top of the marble staircase.

Standing beside him...

Was Vanessa.

Neither of them smiled.

Richard held a thick manila envelope in one hand.

Khloe immediately knew what it was.

Divorce papers.

Before she could speak...

Vanessa took one slow step toward her.

Then another.

A cruel smile spread across her face.

"You really thought he still loved you?"

Khloe instinctively placed both hands over her stomach.

The courthouse crowd continued moving around them.

No one realized history was about to change.

Vanessa leaned closer until only Khloe could hear her.

"I'll make sure your daughter grows up calling me Mommy."

Khloe's face turned pale.

Then...

May you like

Vanessa raised both hands.

And shoved her.
