CHAPTER 4 — THE FIGHT THEY COULDN’T CONTROL

The bell rang again.
Ethan heard nothing.
Not the crowd.
Not the commentators.
Not the cameras.
Not even the roar of thousands of people screaming his name.
His eyes were fixed on the VIP box.
Elias Cross stood beside Victor Kane.
The man who had supposedly disappeared from Ethan's life twelve years ago had just become the most important person in the arena.
Ethan's opponent, Marcus Reed, raised his gloves.
"Focus."
Ethan turned.
Marcus attacked.
A brutal right hand came toward his face.
Ethan slipped underneath it.
The punch missed by inches.
Marcus immediately followed with a left hook.
Ethan blocked.
Then came a knee.
Ethan stepped away.
The crowd exploded.
Marcus grinned.
"You heard me."
Ethan stared at him.
"What?"
"Your father."
Marcus moved closer.
"He used to fight exactly like you."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"Stop talking about my father."
"Why?"
Marcus threw another combination.
"Because you don't like what happened to him?"
Ethan blocked.
Marcus attacked again.
"Or because you're afraid you'll end up the same way?"
Ethan's anger surged.
He threw a hard counter.
Marcus barely avoided it.
The referee stepped closer.
"Control yourselves!"
Ethan took a breath.
His father's voice came back to him.
Not from memory.
From the recording.
Control the mind first.
Ethan closed his eyes for half a second.
Then opened them.
The noise disappeared.
His breathing slowed.
His shoulders relaxed.
Marcus charged.
Ethan waited.
One step.
Two.
Then he moved.
Marcus's fist passed through empty air.
Ethan pivoted.
A body shot.
A low kick.
A short elbow.
Marcus stumbled.
The crowd screamed.
Ethan didn't chase.
He waited.
Marcus looked surprised.
"You changed."
Ethan said nothing.
Marcus attacked again.
This time Ethan saw everything.
Every movement.
Every shift of weight.
Every opening.
He didn't fight Marcus's strength.
He fought his rhythm.
Thirty seconds later, Marcus was breathing heavily.
Ethan wasn't.
The commentators were shouting.
"Unbelievable!"
"He's reading him!"
"Where did this kid learn that?"
Victor Kane watched from the VIP box.
His smile disappeared.
Elias Cross remained perfectly still.
Victor leaned toward him.
"Did Michael teach him?"
Elias shook his head.
"No."
"Then who?"
Elias's eyes remained on Ethan.
"Marcus."
Victor looked at him.
"Marcus Hale?"
Elias nodded.
"He taught the boy everything he taught Michael."
Victor's jaw tightened.
"Then Hale has to be removed."
Elias finally looked at him.
"He already is."
Victor smiled.
"Good."
But neither man noticed Daniel standing in the shadows behind them.
He had heard everything.
Daniel looked at his father.
Then at Victor.
His expression changed.
He had spent twelve years believing Elias had betrayed Michael.
Now he knew there was something worse.
His father wasn't working for Victor.
Victor was working for his father.
Inside the ring, Ethan heard the bell.
Round two.
Marcus Reed stepped forward.
The referee raised his hand.
"Fight!"
Marcus charged immediately.
Ethan moved sideways.
A punch.
Miss.
A kick.
Blocked.
Another punch.
Ethan ducked.
Marcus grabbed his shoulder.
Ethan twisted.
They collided.
Marcus drove him toward the ropes.
The crowd screamed.
"Finish him!"
Marcus whispered:
"They told me to break your left arm."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Marcus twisted.
Pain shot through Ethan's shoulder.
He gritted his teeth.
The referee moved closer.
"Let him go!"
Marcus released.
Ethan stumbled.
His left arm hung awkwardly.
The arena erupted.
The commentators shouted.
"That could be a serious injury!"
Ethan looked down.
His fingers were numb.
For a moment, fear entered his mind.
Then he remembered his father.
Not the dead man from the photograph.
The fighter.
The man who had refused to lose.
Ethan flexed his fingers.
Pain.
But movement remained.
He raised his guard.
Marcus looked surprised.
"You should quit."
Ethan shook his head.
"Not today."
Marcus attacked.
Ethan stepped inside.
Instead of blocking the next punch, he caught Marcus's wrist.
Pivot.
Leverage.
Marcus lost balance.
Ethan used his injured arm carefully.
He swept Marcus's leg.
The giant fighter crashed to the mat.
The crowd went silent.
Ethan stood above him.
Marcus looked up.
"How?"
Ethan whispered:
"My father."
Marcus smiled.
Then quietly said:
"That's what they were afraid of."
Ethan stepped back.
Marcus rose.
Blood ran from his mouth.
The referee checked him.
"Can you continue?"
Marcus nodded.
Then looked at Ethan.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
Marcus lowered his voice.
"They told me if I didn't hurt you..."
He glanced toward the VIP box.
"...they would kill my daughter."
Ethan froze.
Marcus returned to his stance.
The referee stepped between them.
"Fight!"
Ethan's anger changed.
It was no longer directed at Marcus.
It was directed at the people watching.
The people controlling them.
The people turning fighters into weapons.
Ethan looked toward Victor.
Victor smiled.
Ethan smiled back.
Then the fight resumed.
Daniel moved through the VIP corridor.
Two security guards blocked his path.
"Private area."
Daniel looked at them.
"I'm here to see my father."
"Mr. Cross isn't receiving visitors."
Daniel smiled.
"That's unfortunate."
The first guard grabbed him.
Daniel moved instantly.
He caught the wrist.
Turned.
The guard dropped.
The second guard swung.
Daniel ducked.
A strike to the ribs.
The guard fell against the wall.
Daniel walked past them.
He opened the VIP door.
Elias turned.
Their eyes met.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Daniel said:
"You lied to me."
Elias's expression remained calm.
"I protected you."
"You murdered Michael."
Victor looked between them.
Daniel's voice became louder.
"You murdered him."
Elias sighed.
"You still don't understand."
"I understand everything."
"No."
Elias stepped closer.
"You understand what they told you."
Daniel's fists tightened.
"What really happened?"
Elias looked toward the arena.
At Ethan.
"Michael wasn't killed because he refused to lose."
Daniel stared.
"He was killed because he stole something."
"What?"
"The Crown."
Victor's expression changed.
Daniel looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Elias continued.
"The Iron Crown trophy isn't just a trophy."
He looked at Victor.
"Tell him."
Victor remained silent.
Elias smiled.
"Of course."
He turned toward Daniel.
"Your father discovered that the trophy contains a secure storage compartment."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"What's inside?"
"Records."
"What records?"
"Every illegal payment Iron Crown ever made."
Daniel stared.
"Judges."
"Officials."
"Fighters."
"Politicians."
"Police."
"Everyone."
Daniel looked sick.
"And Michael took them."
Elias nodded.
"He stole the evidence before the final."
"Then why kill him?"
"Because we thought he had hidden it."
Daniel's voice cracked.
"You didn't know where?"
"No."
"Then why did you keep searching?"
"Because Michael left a message."
"What message?"
Elias looked toward Ethan.
"That his son would eventually find it."
Daniel's face went pale.
"Ethan."
Elias nodded.
"Exactly."
Daniel suddenly understood.
"You brought Ethan here."
Elias smiled.
"We didn't bring him."
"We waited for him."
Daniel stepped toward him.
"You used me."
"I trained you."
"You used me."
"I gave you a purpose."
"You destroyed my life."
Elias's face finally hardened.
"Your life existed because I allowed it to."
Daniel stared at him.
For the first time, he saw his father clearly.
Not as a mentor.
Not as a protector.
Not as a legend.
As a monster.
Daniel raised his fist.
Elias didn't move.
"Go ahead."
Daniel stopped.
"Kill me."
Daniel's hand trembled.
"You think I'm afraid?"
"No."
Elias whispered:
"I think you're still my son."
Daniel lowered his fist.
Elias smiled.
"Exactly."
Then Victor received a message.
His face changed.
"What?"
Elias looked at him.
Victor showed him the phone.
ROOM 17 HAS BEEN BREACHED.
Elias's expression disappeared.
"Impossible."
Victor looked at Daniel.
"Who knows about Room 17?"
Daniel said nothing.
Elias understood.
"You."
Daniel smiled.
"Not anymore."
Inside the ring, Ethan was exhausted.
His shoulder was injured.
His ribs hurt.
His breathing was heavy.
But Marcus Reed was barely standing.
The final round had begun.
The referee raised his hand.
"Fight!"
Marcus attacked with everything he had.
Ethan blocked.
Countered.
Moved.
The crowd screamed.
The final thirty seconds began.
Ethan landed a clean strike.
Marcus stumbled.
Ten seconds.
Marcus charged.
Ethan stepped aside.
Five seconds.
Marcus fell.
The bell rang.
Silence.
Then the arena exploded.
The referee raised Ethan's hand.
"Winner!"
Ethan closed his eyes.
He had won.
But something was wrong.
The crowd's reaction felt distant.
Victor Kane wasn't angry.
He was smiling.
Ethan looked toward him.
Victor slowly applauded.
Once.
Twice.
Then he pointed toward the championship trophy sitting beside the ring.
Ethan stared at it.
The trophy.
His father's evidence.
The thing he had come here to find.
Victor mouthed two words.
Come get it.
Backstage, Ethan was surrounded by medical staff.
"Your shoulder needs to be examined."
"I'm fine."
"You may have a partial dislocation."
"I said I'm fine."
A voice came from behind him.
"He's not."
Ethan turned.
Daniel.
They stared at each other.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Ethan asked:
"Your father."
Daniel looked down.
"He knows about the trophy."
"I know."
"He knows what your father hid."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"Then why hasn't he taken it?"
"Because he doesn't know exactly where the evidence is."
Ethan looked toward the arena.
"Inside the trophy."
Daniel shook his head.
"That's only part of it."
"What?"
"Your father split the evidence."
Ethan stared.
"Where's the rest?"
Daniel looked around.
"Not here."
"Then where?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"In the place where your father died."
Ethan's face changed.
"The crash."
Daniel nodded.
"Your father didn't die on the road."
"What?"
"He was alive when they took him."
Ethan stopped breathing.
Daniel continued.
"They brought him somewhere."
"Where?"
"Blackstone."
Ethan's eyes widened.
"Room 17?"
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"Below it."
Ethan whispered:
"There's another level?"
Daniel nodded.
"The old training chamber."
Ethan stared.
"Why didn't Marcus tell me?"
"Because he was afraid."
"Of what?"
"Of what your father left behind."
That night, Ethan and Daniel returned to Blackstone.
The academy was empty.
The tournament staff had already left.
Rain tapped against the windows.
Daniel walked toward the center of the mat.
"Help me move this."
They pulled the mat aside.
Underneath was a metal plate.
A crown symbol had been carved into it.
Ethan crouched.
"There."
He found a small keyhole.
Daniel pulled out a key.
Ethan stared.
"Where did you get that?"
"From my father."
"You stole it?"
"I took back what belonged to me."
The key turned.
The metal plate opened.
A staircase descended into darkness.
They looked at each other.
Then went down.
The staircase seemed endless.
At the bottom was a chamber.
Old.
Concrete.
Dusty.
But one object stood in the center.
A wooden chair.
Beside it—
a bloodstained training belt.
Ethan stopped.
He recognized it.
His father's.
He walked toward it.
His hands trembled.
Daniel looked away.
"I was here."
Ethan turned.
"What?"
"The night your father died."
Daniel swallowed.
"I was fourteen."
"You saw him?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"My father brought me."
"Why?"
"He wanted me to watch."
Ethan stared.
"Watch what?"
"Your father fight."
"Against who?"
Daniel's voice broke.
"My father."
Ethan stepped backward.
"Your father fought mine?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Michael had the evidence."
Daniel pointed toward the floor.
"Your father refused to give it back."
Ethan looked at the bloodstained belt.
"What happened?"
Daniel shook his head.
"My father beat him."
Ethan's fists tightened.
"Then killed him."
"No."
Daniel looked at him.
"That's the part nobody knows."
"What?"
"Michael won."
Ethan froze.
"Your father was defeated."
Daniel nodded.
"Michael escaped."
"Then how did he die?"
Daniel pointed toward a hidden door.
"He never made it outside."
Ethan walked toward it.
There was a small security monitor.
Daniel turned it on.
The screen flickered.
A recording appeared.
Twelve years old.
Michael Cole stood in the chamber.
Bleeding.
Breathing heavily.
Elias Cross stood across from him.
Marcus Hale was there too.
And behind them—
a younger Victor Kane.
Michael held something in his hand.
A small black device.
The evidence.
Elias said:
"Give it to me."
Michael shook his head.
"You already lost."
Victor stepped forward.
"Then we'll make sure you never tell anyone."
Marcus looked terrified.
"Don't."
Elias turned.
"You're still loyal to him?"
Marcus said nothing.
Michael looked at Marcus.
"Protect my son."
Marcus nodded.
Elias attacked.
The recording became chaotic.
Michael fought.
Marcus tried to intervene.
Victor pulled him away.
Then—
the screen went black.
Ethan stared.
"What happened?"
Daniel whispered:
"They cut the recording."
"Who?"
"My father."
The screen came back.
Michael was gone.
Elias was holding the black device.
But then Victor looked at him.
"Where's the second half?"
Elias froze.
"What?"
Michael's voice came from somewhere outside the camera.
"You'll never find it."
Elias turned.
The recording ended.
Ethan looked at Daniel.
"Where did Michael hide the rest?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
Then Ethan noticed something.
On the wall.
Three words.
Written in his father's handwriting.
THE SON KNOWS.
Ethan stared.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked at him.
"You."
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't know anything."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Think."
Ethan closed his eyes.
His father's old phrases.
His childhood.
The things he had forgotten.
Then one memory surfaced.
A rainy afternoon.
He was six years old.
His father had been teaching him basic footwork.
Michael had tapped his forehead.
"What matters most?"
Young Ethan had laughed.
"The strongest punch?"
Michael smiled.
"No."
"The fastest kick?"
"No."
Ethan had thought.
"The belt?"
Michael shook his head.
"The thing nobody thinks to look at."
Ethan opened his eyes.
"The training mat."
Daniel stared.
"The mat?"
Ethan nodded.
"Not underneath it."
He looked around the chamber.
"Inside it."
Daniel's eyes widened.
They turned toward the old wall.
There was another piece of flooring.
A section of the original training surface.
Ethan pulled it apart.
Inside was a small metal box.
He opened it.
A black drive.
And a handwritten letter.
The letter was addressed to Ethan.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Ethan,
If you found this, then Iron Crown has already found you.
He swallowed.
I need you to understand something.
I didn't leave this evidence so you could destroy them.
Ethan frowned.
I left it so you could expose them.
He continued reading.
Violence is what they understand.
Truth is what they fear.
Then the final line:
And the person you should fear most is not Victor Kane.
Ethan stopped.
Daniel leaned closer.
"Who?"
Ethan looked at the final sentence.
His face went pale.
It is the man who taught you how to fight.
Ethan slowly looked at Daniel.
Daniel whispered:
"Marcus."
A noise came from the staircase.
Footsteps.
Someone was coming.
Ethan grabbed the drive.
Daniel raised his guard.
A figure appeared.
Marcus Hale.
Blood covered one side of his face.
He looked exhausted.
But alive.
Ethan stared.
"Coach."
Marcus looked at the drive in Ethan's hand.
Then at the letter.
His expression collapsed.
"No."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You taught my father."
Marcus shook his head.
"Ethan, listen to me."
"You were there the night he died."
"Yes."
"You knew where the evidence was."
"Yes."
"You lied."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Ethan's voice became colder.
"Did you kill my father?"
Marcus looked directly at him.
"No."
A long silence.
"Then who did?"
Marcus swallowed.
Before he could answer—
the lights came on.
Victor Kane stood at the top of the stairs.
Behind him were six armed men.
Elias Cross stood beside him.
And Daniel's face went white.
Because Elias was holding a photograph.
A photograph of Ethan's mother.
Victor smiled.
"You found it."
Ethan tightened his grip around the drive.
Victor slowly walked down the stairs.
"You have no idea how long we've waited for this moment."
Ethan stepped forward.
"You killed my father."
Victor shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Marcus.
"Your coach did."
Ethan turned.
Marcus froze.
Victor smiled.
"Ask him what happened after Michael escaped."
Ethan stared at Marcus.
Marcus couldn't meet his eyes.
Victor continued.
"He'll tell you."
Then he looked at the drive.
"Because your father didn't die that night."
Ethan's heart stopped.
Victor whispered:
"Marcus killed him three days later."
The chamber fell silent.
Daniel looked at Marcus in disbelief.
"Is that true?"
Marcus finally raised his eyes.
Tears filled them.
And he said the words Ethan had spent twelve years waiting to hear.
"I was the one who found your father."
A pause.
"I was the one who tried to save him."
Another pause.
"And I was the one who made the decision that ended his life."
Ethan stared.
Marcus lowered his head.
"I didn't kill your father."
He looked at Ethan.
"I chose between his life..."
His voice broke.
"...and yours."
Victor smiled.
"Now you understand."
He raised his hand.
The armed men stepped forward.
"Give me the drive."
Ethan looked at Marcus.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Elias.
Finally, he looked at Victor.
His fear disappeared.
He smiled.
"No."
Victor's expression hardened.
Ethan lifted the black drive.
"Because my father was right."
Victor frowned.
"About what?"
Ethan looked directly into the cameras hidden around the chamber.
"Truth is what you fear."
Victor's face changed.
Daniel suddenly understood.
The entire chamber was being recorded.
Ethan hadn't just found the evidence.
He had found the transmission system.
And somewhere above them—
every screen inside the Iron Crown arena had just switched on.
The entire world was about to see what happened beneath Blackstone.
Victor looked toward the ceiling.
"No."
Ethan smiled.
"Yes."
Then every light in the chamber went red.
And the voice of Michael Cole filled the speakers.
"If you're hearing this, my son finally found the truth."
Victor's face went white.
Because the dead man had just begun speaking.
May you like
And his final message had only one purpose:
To destroy Iron Crown from the inside.
