Chapter 1: The Door Opens

Chapter 1: The Door Opens
The heavy iron door directly behind the two children was suddenly thrown open with violent force.
Both girls jumped.
A tall man stumbled out of the building, breathing heavily. His face was pale with panic as he looked around the empty street.
"There she is!" a woman's voice cried from inside.
Several people rushed out after him.
The girl in the woolen coat instinctively tightened her arms around her new friend.
"What is happening?" whispered the homeless girl.
The man froze when he saw them. More specifically, he froze when he saw the homeless child.
His eyes widened.
"No..." he whispered.
The little girl looked up nervously.
The man slowly knelt before her, tears forming in his eyes.
"Emily?" he asked with a trembling voice.
The homeless girl stared at him in confusion.
Years ago, during a terrible fire that destroyed part of the city, the man's daughter had disappeared. Everyone believed she had died.
But he had never stopped searching.
And now, looking at the small birthmark beneath the girl's left ear, he knew.
This was his daughter.
The crowd stood speechless.
