The ballroom remained silent.
No one dared move.
Colonel Marcus Vance held the medal in both hands as though it were something sacred.
His eyes never left Maya.
"Where did you get this?" he asked quietly.
Maya wiped away tears and adjusted her crying baby.
"I've had it my entire life."
Marcus's expression tightened.
"Who gave it to you?"
"No one."
She hesitated.
"It was wrapped inside the blanket I was found in when I was a baby."
A murmur spread through the room.
Victoria rolled her eyes.
"So what? Thousands of abandoned children are found with random trinkets."
Marcus slowly turned toward her.
"No."
The single word carried enough force to silence her.
Then he faced the guests.
Twenty years earlier, the nation had celebrated a military hero named General Alexander Hale.
A decorated commander.
A man who had saved hundreds of soldiers during a border conflict.
A man respected across the country.
But few people knew his greatest tragedy.
His only granddaughter had disappeared during a violent kidnapping attempt.
Despite years of searching, she was never found.
The child vanished.
Without a trace.
Until tonight.
Marcus pointed to the insignia etched into the medal.
"This symbol was never publicly recorded."
The guests leaned forward.
"It belonged exclusively to the Hale family."
A collective gasp swept across the hall.
Victoria suddenly looked pale.
Maya stared at him.
Unable to breathe.
Unable to speak.
Marcus's voice softened.
"What was the date listed on your orphanage records?"
Maya answered.
"June 14th."
The old investigator closed his eyes.
That was the exact day the Hale child disappeared.
The room exploded with whispers.

"It can't be..."
"She's the missing granddaughter?"
Victoria's knees nearly gave out.
