Chapter 2 – The Truth Behind the Silence
"Call an ambulance!"
Caleb's voice thundered through the mansion.
The servants rushed forward, but no one dared look Eleanor in the eye.
Amelia winced as Caleb gently brushed the hair away from her face.
"I'm here," he whispered. "Stay with me."
She forced a weak smile.
"Our baby..."
Caleb looked at her trembling hands wrapped around her stomach.
"Our baby will be okay," he promised, though fear gripped every word.
The ambulance arrived within minutes.
At the hospital, Caleb paced outside the emergency room for what felt like a lifetime.
Eleanor finally appeared.
She expected sympathy.
Instead, every member of the Whitfield family turned away.
"Caleb," she began, "I only wanted to protect you."
He didn't answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the operating room doors.
After nearly two hours, the doctor walked out.
"The baby is safe."
Caleb closed his eyes in relief.
"But Mrs. Whitfield suffered severe trauma. She'll need time to recover."
He nodded gratefully before entering Amelia's room.
She was awake.
Pale.
Exhausted.
"I'm sorry," Caleb whispered.
She looked at him quietly.
"You promised we'd tell them after the baby was born."
"I know."
She reached for his hand.
"Keeping secrets doesn't protect people forever."
Caleb lowered his head.
Five years earlier, his company had collapsed under crushing debt.
Banks refused to help.
Investors disappeared overnight.
Then Amelia quietly contacted her father—the mayor.
Without revealing her relationship to Caleb, she convinced several business leaders to invest in his company.
The rescue came anonymously.
Everyone believed Caleb had rebuilt the business himself.
Even Eleanor.
Only Amelia knew the truth.
Caleb wanted the secret buried forever because he feared people would think he succeeded only because of Amelia's family.
But that silence had given Eleanor permission to despise the woman who had saved them all.
