Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Choice

Vanessa Sterling watched Richard’s arrest from a television inside the county detention center.

For months, she had believed he would protect her.

He promised that the charges would collapse.

He promised the witnesses would disappear.

He promised she would be released and publicly vindicated.

Instead, Richard described her as emotionally unstable.

His attorneys suggested she had become obsessed with him and acted alone.

Vanessa requested an immediate meeting with Marcus Vale.

When he arrived, she threw Richard’s public statement across the table.

“He is blaming me.”

Vale remained calm.

“He is defending himself.”

“He told me we had a plan.”

“Stop speaking.”

“He told me Claire would be hospitalized.”

“Vanessa.”

“He said we would be married before the end of the year.”

Vale leaned toward her.

“Every sentence you say becomes discoverable if this conversation loses privilege through a crime-fraud exception. You need to listen carefully. Richard is facing federal charges. He will sacrifice you.”

“He loves me.”

“No. He used you.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

Vale did not soften the truth.

“You pushed a pregnant woman down a staircase in front of dozens of witnesses.”

“She provoked me.”

“You denied touching her.”

“The cameras were off.”

“A clerk saw you. Several recordings captured your statements. Martin Hale and Victor Shaw are cooperating. The hospital email proves you tried to control witnesses.”

Vanessa stared at the table.

“What happens if I cooperate?”

“You may receive a reduced sentence.”

“How reduced?”

“That depends on what you know.”

“I know everything.”

“Then you need to decide whether protecting Richard matters more than spending the next twenty-five years in prison.”

Vanessa asked to meet with prosecutors.

Ethan attended as Claire’s attorney.

Vanessa entered wearing jail clothing.

Without expensive makeup and tailored suits, she looked younger.

More frightened.

She avoided Ethan’s eyes.

The prosecutor began.

“Tell us about your relationship with Richard Harrington.”

Vanessa described their first affair during a conference in Miami.

Richard told her his marriage was already over.

He claimed Claire was emotionally unstable and refused to grant a divorce.

Vanessa believed him because she wanted to.

Over time, Richard revealed the financial scheme.

Vanessa created fake public relations subcontractors and returned most of the payments to accounts he controlled.

She kept a percentage.

When Claire discovered the affair, Richard said they needed to secure her shares before the baby was born.

“He told me the child would trap him forever,” Vanessa said.

“Did he ask you to threaten Claire?”

“Yes.”

“Did you send the anonymous messages?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make her appear paranoid.”

“Did Richard approve the messages?”

“He wrote some of them.”

“Did you know Dr. Pritchard’s records were false?”

“Yes.”

“Did Richard instruct you to push Claire?”

Vanessa’s eyes shifted toward Ethan.

“No.”

“Then why did you do it?”

“She was exposing us.”

“That does not explain the push.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Richard told me to finish it.”

“What did you understand that to mean?”

“To make her sign.”

“Did you have settlement documents?”

“They were in my car.”

“What happened when she refused?”

“I lost control.”

“Was the push accidental?”

Vanessa began crying.

“I wanted her to stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like she finally understood me.”

Ethan spoke for the first time.

“What did she understand?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“That Richard would never choose me.”

The room remained silent.

Vanessa described the moments after the fall.

Richard told her not to speak.

He ordered her to leave before police arrived.

When she froze, he stepped away and pretended they were not together.

“He didn’t come down the stairs,” Ethan said.

“No.”

“Why?”

“He said being seen beside Claire would complicate the narrative.”

Even Vanessa seemed horrified by the memory now.

Claire had been bleeding.

Richard had been calculating.

Vanessa provided access to cloud accounts containing messages Richard believed she had deleted.

One conversation occurred the night before the hearing.

RICHARD: She signs tomorrow.

VANESSA: And if she doesn’t?

RICHARD: Then Pritchard certifies her.

VANESSA: Ethan will fight it.

RICHARD: Ethan cannot fight what he cannot prove.

Another message was sent minutes before the confrontation.

RICHARD: Cameras are handled.

VANESSA: Are you sure?

RICHARD: No witnesses. No recording. Break her confidence.

Vanessa also preserved an audio message.

Richard’s voice was unmistakable.

You wanted a future with me. Earn it.

The evidence established that Richard directed the confrontation.

It still did not prove he intended the push.

But it destroyed his claim that Vanessa acted independently.

Prosecutors offered Vanessa a plea agreement requiring truthful testimony.

She would plead guilty to aggravated assault, conspiracy, obstruction, and financial crimes.

The recommended sentence ranged from twelve to eighteen years.

Vanessa stared at the agreement.

“Twelve years?”

“That is the minimum recommendation,” Vale said.

“I’ll be almost fifty.”

Claire, who had been listening remotely, asked to speak with her privately.

Ethan objected.

Claire insisted.

Vanessa entered a secure video room.

Claire appeared on the screen holding Emily.

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Vanessa looked at the child.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire’s face remained calm.

“No, you are afraid.”

“I never meant to hurt the baby.”

“You sent messages saying she should never be born.”

“Richard made me believe—”

“Richard did not move your hands.”

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.”

“Why did you agree to speak with me?”

“I don’t know.”

“I do. You want me to say I forgive you so you can believe cooperation makes you a good person.”

Vanessa began crying.

Claire continued.

“I am not giving you that. You will testify because it is the only decent choice you have left. You will tell the truth because every lie helped Richard hurt another person.”

“Will you ask the judge for the maximum sentence?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked up, startled by the honesty.

Claire adjusted the blanket around Emily.

“But I will also tell the judge if you testify truthfully.”

“Why?”

“Because the truth should matter even when it comes from someone I hate.”

Vanessa signed the agreement.

That night, Richard received a copy of the cooperation notice.

He read Vanessa’s name and smiled coldly.

Then he asked his attorney for a single sheet of paper.

He wrote a message and addressed it to Claire.
