CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH NO MONEY COULD BUY

The police removed the handcuffs immediately.
No one objected.
Alexander couldn't stop staring at the young maid.
"What is your mother's name?" he whispered.
"Grace."
The name hit him harder than any bullet.
Twenty-eight years ago, Grace had disappeared after a terrible misunderstanding engineered by Alexander's powerful father.
His family had told him she had left with another man.
They told Grace that Alexander had rejected both her and the unborn child.
Neither story had been true.
Both had been carefully crafted lies.
Grace had spent her entire life raising her daughter alone.
She never married.
She worked two jobs until illness forced her to stop.
Before dying, she gave her daughter the old photograph.
"If you ever meet this man," Grace had whispered from her hospital bed, "don't ask him for money.
Ask him whether he remembers his promise."
The maid had never planned to meet Alexander.
She had accepted a temporary job serving at his gala simply because she desperately needed money for her mother's funeral debts.
She never imagined fate would place them face to face.
Alexander's voice trembled.
"What's your name?"
"Emily."
"My God..."
Tears rolled freely down his face.
"My daughter."
Emily stepped backward.
"No."
"You've mistaken me for someone else."
Alexander shook his head.
"We'll take a DNA test."
Three days later...
the results arrived.
