Chapter 2 – The Man Behind the Door

The maid's face drained of color.

"M-Mr. Hawthorne..."

She stumbled backward until her calves struck the velvet chair.

The man standing in the doorway didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

Nathan Hawthorne, founder of one of the country's largest logistics companies, walked inside with measured steps, his dark overcoat still dusted with rain.

His eyes never left the little girl.

Emily was still kneeling.

Still clutching the yellow mop.

Still trying not to cry.

Every instinct in him shattered.

He crossed the foyer in seconds and knelt beside her.

"You don't have to clean anymore."

His daughter looked up, her lips trembling.

"Daddy... I spilled the water."

Nathan glanced at the bucket.

Barely half a cup had splashed across the marble.

"You fell because someone tripped you."

Emily hesitated.

Then nodded.

Very slowly.

Nathan slipped off his jacket and wrapped it around her tiny shoulders before lifting her into his arms.

Only then did he turn toward the maid.

"What happened?"

The maid forced a smile.

"Sir... she's just being dramatic. I was teaching her responsibility."

Nathan looked toward the staircase.

The phone still rested on the step.

Its screen displayed an active call.

His executive assistant had heard every word.

So had the family's attorney.

Nathan calmly picked up the phone.

"I assume you recorded everything."

"We did," came the reply.

"Every second."

The maid's knees weakened.

"I can explain—"

"No."

Nathan's voice remained calm.

"You've already explained exactly who you are."

Within minutes, two security officers entered the house.

The maid looked desperately toward Emily.

"Tell your father I never hurt you."

Emily lowered her eyes.

Then quietly whispered,

"You said Daddy would never believe me."

Silence filled the mansion.

Nathan closed his eyes for one painful moment.

Then he spoke.

"Escort her out."

The maid was led away screaming that it was all a misunderstanding.

Nathan never looked back.

Instead, he carried Emily upstairs, gently cleaning the blood from her knees himself.

As she rested against his shoulder, she finally allowed herself to cry.

May you like

And Nathan made a silent promise.

No one would ever make his daughter fear her own home again.
