Chapter 8 - THE MAN THEY BLAMED

Declan Kane had never stolen the money.
He had stolen something more dangerous.
Proof.
That was what they learned on the drive to the Moretti estate.
Matteo accessed a surveillance cache Declan had hidden inside a private security server.
There were six video files.
The first showed Michael Lombardi entering Dominic’s law office after midnight three months earlier.
The second showed Dominic meeting Matteo’s father’s former associates.
The third showed Declan secretly photographing hidden board records.
Gabriel stared at the screen.
“He knew.”
Matteo nodded.
“Longer than we did.”
Norah looked at Gabriel.
“Why didn’t he tell you?”
Gabriel answered immediately.
“Because Declan trusts no one.”
“Sounds familiar.”
He ignored that.
The fourth video answered the real question.
Declan sat alone in a hotel room speaking into a camera.
“If Gabriel is watching this, either I’m dead or you finally stopped assuming I’m stupid.”
Gabriel muttered:
“Debatable.”
Norah almost smiled.
Declan continued on-screen.
“The fourteen-percent theft isn’t mine.”
“I found it five months ago.”
Norah leaned closer.
Five months.
Long before she discovered it.
“I followed Lombardi.”
“I found the Table.”
“I found Orpheus.”
Declan’s expression hardened.
“And then I found my own name.”
He held up a document.
Interim succession.
D.K.
“I’m not being promoted.”
“I’m being prepared for slaughter.”
Gabriel’s face went still.
Declan continued.
“So I did what any reasonable man would do.”
“I started stealing evidence.”
The fifth file showed Declan breaking into Dominic’s archive.
The sixth—
showed him opening a sealed box.
Inside was the original Marco trust amendment.
Norah sat upright.
“He had it.”
Matteo nodded.
“Dominic must have caught him later.”
Gabriel looked at the video.
“Where did Declan put the trust?”
No answer.
The recording ended.
Norah thought.
Declan distrusted everyone.
He knew he was being watched.
He expected death.
Where would he hide something?
Not a bank.
Not a house.
Not digital.
She asked Gabriel:
“What does Declan care about?”
“Money.”
“Besides money.”
“Whiskey.”
“Gabriel.”
He thought.
“His sister.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Chicago.”
“No.”
Norah shook her head.
“If he hid evidence with her, Dominic would find it.”
“What else?”
Gabriel stared through the windshield.
Then:
“His father’s grave.”
Norah looked at him.
“Why?”
“Declan visits every year.”
“Where?”
“St. Michael’s.”
Isabella turned.
“The same church where Marco married Evelyn.”
Coincidence was officially dead.
Norah understood.
Declan had discovered the Marco records.
He chose a hiding place connected to the trust.
“After the estate,” she said.
Gabriel looked at her.
“No.”
“What?”
“If we survive the estate, we go to the church.”
The word if remained between them.
They reached the Moretti property at 3:18 a.m.
Forty-two minutes until transfer.
The mansion stood on a hill overlooking the river.
Dark windows.
Stone walls.
Massive iron gates.
Norah expected guards.
There were none.
“That’s worse,” she said.
“Yes.”
Gabriel stopped the car.
He looked at Isabella.
“You stay.”
She laughed.
“No.”
“Mother.”
“Do not begin pretending you became obedient at forty.”
Matteo almost smiled.
Gabriel stared at him.
He stopped.
Norah checked the three activation keys.
Arthur’s.
Isabella’s.
ES-14.
All present.
She carried no ledger.
That was hidden elsewhere.
Only Gabriel knew where.
The four entered through the eastern service wing.
Gabriel knew every corridor.
Every stair.
Every blind corner.
Norah realized something painful.
This had been his childhood home.
A place that looked to her like a fortress had once been where a boy slept.
They reached the central hall.
Lights came on.
Dominic stood at the top of the staircase.
Michael Lombardi stood beside him.
Declan sat tied to a chair below.
Bruised.
Conscious.
Angry.
“About time,” Declan muttered.
Gabriel looked at him.
“You look terrible.”
“Nice to see you too.”
Dominic smiled.
“Family reunions.”
Norah looked at Lombardi.
He held a tablet.
Settlement clock.
00:34:12.
Thirty-four minutes.
Dominic descended.
“No weapons.”
Gabriel laughed.
“No.”
Dominic gestured.
A laser dot appeared on Norah’s chest.
Another on Isabella.
Snipers.
Gabriel slowly put his gun down.
Matteo followed.
Isabella did too.
Dominic looked at Norah.
“The keys.”
“No.”
“Then someone dies.”
Declan sighed.
“It’ll probably be me.”
Dominic ignored him.
Norah looked at Lombardi.
“You understand what happens if he gets the keys?”
Lombardi’s face tightened.
Dominic turned.
“Michael.”
Norah pushed.
“Your trust takes over if Dominic is indicted.”
Lombardi stared.
“How do you know that?”
“I read.”
Dominic’s voice sharpened.
“She is manipulating you.”
Norah laughed.
“He built you as his successor.”
Lombardi looked at Dominic.
“That’s good.”
Norah continued.
“And Matteo as Gabriel’s.”
Matteo glanced toward Lombardi.
“And Declan as the disposable middle.”
Declan muttered:
“Glad everyone caught up.”
Norah looked at Lombardi.
“How many successors does Dominic need?”
Silence.
“Unless none of you are successors.”
Lombardi’s expression shifted.
Dominic said:
“Enough.”
Norah took one step forward.
The laser followed.
“You’re all buffers.”
“Legal insulation.”
“Financial insulation.”
“Security insulation.”
“Dominic doesn’t inherit the risk.”
“You do.”
Lombardi looked at the tablet.
Then Dominic.
For the first time, doubt became visible.
Gabriel saw it.
So did Declan.
Dominic stepped closer to Lombardi.
“Give me the tablet.”
Lombardi did not.
“Michael.”
“No.”
Everything changed.
Dominic’s face hardened.
“Excuse me?”
“I said no.”
The countdown continued.
00:27:51.
Norah held the keys.
“Michael.”
He looked at her.
“Can you stop the transfer?”
“Yes.”
“Without the keys?”
“No.”
“Can Dominic?”
“No.”
“Then right now you matter more than he does.”
Dominic moved toward him.
Lombardi raised a gun.
“Stay back.”
One sniper laser left Norah.
Moved to Lombardi.
Dominic said quietly:
“You disappoint me.”
Lombardi laughed.
“I gave you thirty years.”
“And you were paid.”
“I built this system.”
“Arthur built it.”
Lombardi’s face twisted.
“That old man built a prototype.”
“He built the only part you never understood.”
Norah saw the insult land.
Numbers.
Ownership.
Arthur’s words.
Lombardi looked at her.
“What part?”
Norah answered:
“Human behavior.”
He frowned.
She continued.
“He designed controls assuming someone like you would eventually try to remove them.”
“Impossible.”
“Seventeen.”
Lombardi’s face changed.
“You keep saying seventeen.”
“Because there are seventeen.”
“No.”
“There are.”
“Show me.”
Norah smiled.
“Untie Declan.”
Gabriel looked at her.
Declan did too.
Lombardi hesitated.
Dominic snapped:
“Do not.”
That decided it.
Lombardi shot the restraint near Declan’s wrist.
Declan pulled free.
Chaos followed.
Gabriel moved before the second shot.
He knocked Dominic behind a stone column.
Matteo fired at the balcony.
Isabella dragged Norah down.
Declan tackled a guard.
Lombardi disappeared toward the library.
The countdown continued.
00:19:03.
Norah ran after him.
Gabriel shouted:
“Norah!”
She ignored him.
Inside the library, Lombardi connected the tablet to an old settlement terminal.
“You lied.”
“About?”
“Seventeen controls.”
“No.”
“Then show me.”
Norah inserted Arthur’s key.
One menu appeared.
She inserted Isabella’s.
Another.
Then ES-14.
Full architecture unlocked.
Lombardi stared.
Seventeen reconciliation nodes.
His face went white.
“How?”
“Arthur never removed them.”
“But I disabled—”
“Interfaces.”
Not controls.
The difference devastated him.
The old system had been waiting beneath everything.
Norah saw the final node.
Inheritance validation.
She understood.
“Gabriel!”
He entered moments later.
“What?”
“I need your authorization.”
“For what?”
“To trigger the seventeenth control.”
“What does it do?”
Norah looked at him.
“It freezes every Moretti-controlled account pending ownership verification.”
“How long?”
“Seventy-two hours.”
Lombardi swore.
Dominic entered behind Gabriel.
Gun raised.
“No one touches that terminal.”
Gabriel turned.
Dominic fired.
The bullet struck the wall.
Gabriel attacked.
They crashed into a bookshelf.
Norah focused on the screen.
00:09:41.
“Nine minutes!”
Lombardi looked at the system.
“We need Gabriel’s biometric.”
Norah shouted:
“Gabriel!”
Dominic slammed him against the desk.
Isabella fired from the doorway.
Dominic moved.
Matteo reached the library.
Declan behind him.
For one insane moment, every betrayal of the last fourteen years converged in the same room.
00:06:12.
Gabriel reached the terminal.
Placed his hand on the scanner.
“Do it.”
Norah triggered inheritance validation.
The system responded.
SECOND CLAIMANT REQUIRED.
She stared.
“What?”
Isabella saw it.
“Marco’s line.”
Norah understood.
She put her own hand beside Gabriel’s.
The scanner read.
NORA EVELYN MORETTI.
VALIDATED.
Gabriel looked at her.
For the first time, her birth name didn’t feel like theft.
It felt like evidence.
Norah pressed EXECUTE.
00:02:03.
The system froze.
Transfers stopped.
All one hundred eighty-six million dollars remained in place.
Lombardi stared.
“No.”
Norah smiled.
“Arthur wins.”
Dominic screamed:
“No!”
He lunged.
Matteo intercepted him.
They crashed to the floor.
Sirens sounded outside.
Gabriel looked toward the windows.
“Who called police?”
Declan laughed breathlessly.
“I did.”
Everyone turned.
“You?”
Declan shrugged.
“I dislike dying.”
The sirens multiplied.
Not local police.
Federal vehicles.
Norah looked at the ledger references.
“Daniel Mercer.”
Declan nodded.
“I sent him copies.”
Gabriel’s face became murderous.
“You sent a federal agent our books?”
“Your books were going to get us killed.”
“That doesn’t improve your decision.”
“It improves my odds.”
Norah looked at Gabriel.
“This might be the only way.”
He understood.
Dominic had corrupted judges.
Police.
Officials.
But a clean federal agent outside the ledger—
maybe.
Maybe.
Gabriel looked toward the windows.
Then at Norah.
“What do you want me to do?”
The question surprised everyone.
Gabriel Moretti asking someone else what came next.
Norah answered.
“Tell the truth.”
He almost laughed.
“That could take a while.”
“Start with tonight.”
The front doors thundered.
Federal agents entered.
Weapons raised.
“Hands where we can see them!”
Gabriel slowly raised his hands.
Dominic shouted:
“She stole the funds!”
Norah looked at the screen.
“No funds moved.”
Dominic’s face collapsed.
Special Agent Daniel Mercer entered the library.
Forty-five.
Calm.
Tired eyes.
He looked at Gabriel.
Then Norah.
Then the frozen settlement system.
“Which one of you is Norah Vale?”
Norah raised her hand.
Mercer studied her.
“You sent the files?”
Declan started to speak.
Norah interrupted.
“Yes.”
Mercer looked at her.
“You understand what you’ve sent me?”
“Some of it.”
“Then you understand everyone in this house is coming with us.”
Gabriel stepped forward.
“She goes under protection.”
Mercer looked at him.
“You don’t set conditions.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
“I do when—”
Norah touched his arm.
He stopped.
She looked at Mercer.
“I’ll cooperate.”
Dominic smiled.
Then Mercer added:
“So will Mr. Moretti.”
Gabriel stared.
Mercer continued.
“Because if half of what you sent is real, someone has spent fourteen years using his organization as a financial mask.”
Dominic’s smile disappeared.
Mercer looked at him.
“And I’m more interested in the architect than the mask.”
May you like
For the first time—
Dominic Serra looked genuinely afraid.
