Chapter 4: The Brother Who Vanished

The tunnel led to the basement of an abandoned rectory two blocks from the church.
Daniel’s remaining guards secured the building.
Three of his men had been wounded. One was dead.
Vincent Russo had disappeared during the attack.
His vehicle had been found with the driver’s door open and blood across the steering wheel.
Daniel did not know whether Vincent had been abducted, injured, or had willingly vanished.
Caleb had been living beneath the rectory for nearly seven months.
His small room contained canned food, batteries, police radios, and newspaper clippings covering the walls.
Photographs showed Sebastian Whitlock meeting Captain Voss, union president Leonard Grady, and several city officials.
Another photograph showed Claire entering a hotel with Vincent.
The image had been taken a year before Claire became engaged to Daniel.
Daniel held it beneath a desk lamp.
“Were they together?”
Caleb shook his head.
“I don’t know. But they met privately at least six times.”
“Why didn’t you contact Hannah?”
“I tried.”
“You called once,” Hannah said. “Then you disappeared.”
“Because Aaron was killed.”
Hannah’s face tightened.
Caleb lowered his eyes.
“I asked Aaron to help me obtain the manifests. Sebastian discovered it. Aaron told me to run while he distracted them.”
“He died because of you.”
The words escaped before Hannah could stop them.
Caleb flinched.
“Yes.”
Hannah turned away.
Daniel stepped closer but did not touch her.
Caleb continued.
“Aaron’s death was staged as an accident. Captain Voss handled the report. A dock supervisor named Thomas Reed pushed him.”
“The man who entered Hannah’s hospital room,” Daniel said.
Caleb nodded.
“Whitlock kept Reed hidden afterward. He used men like him until they became liabilities.”
Daniel thought about the attacker dying before interrogation.
“Why did Reed try to kill Hannah?”
“Sebastian believes her child could become a Carver heir.”
“He knew Daniel might be the father?” Hannah asked.
Caleb looked at her stomach.
“Aaron knew.”
Hannah froze.
“How?”
“Aaron found an old photograph of you and Daniel. When you became pregnant, he calculated the dates.”
“He promised he would never tell anyone.”
“He didn’t tell Sebastian. He told me.”
Hannah’s eyes filled with fresh tears.
“Why?”
“Because if the child belonged to Daniel, Aaron believed you would become a target.”
Daniel looked away.
Aaron Brooks had protected a child who might not have been his and died trying to expose the men now hunting that child.
Caleb unlocked a steel box beneath the bed.
Inside were copies of financial records and a sealed letter.
He handed it to Hannah.
“Aaron wrote this the night before he died.”
Her name was written across the envelope.
She could not open it.
Not yet.
Daniel placed a hand on her shoulder.
A guard entered.
“Mr. Carver, we intercepted police communications. Captain Voss has issued an arrest warrant for you.”
“For what?”
“The shooting at St. Gabriel’s. Witnesses claim your men attacked first.”
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
“What witnesses?”
“Three men connected to Whitlock Shipping.”
Caleb stared at the wall of photographs.
“They’re moving faster than I expected.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Sebastian Whitlock’s name appeared on the screen.
Daniel answered.
Sebastian spoke without greeting.
“My daughter has been abducted.”
“Claire is at my estate.”
“Your men are holding her illegally.”
“She poisoned Hannah.”
“You have no proof.”
“I will.”
Sebastian’s voice hardened.
“You humiliated Claire in front of the entire city. Now the video makes her look like a monster while you play devoted father to a servant’s child.”
“She used scissors on a pregnant woman.”
“A household employee who seduced her employer.”
Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.
“You should choose your next words carefully.”
“I have already chosen them. Release Claire, surrender yourself to Captain Voss, and give me every document Caleb Monroe left behind.”
Daniel glanced at Caleb.
“You seem certain he left something.”
“I am certain of many things.”
“Did you kill Aaron Brooks?”
Sebastian became silent.
Then he said, “Aaron Brooks should have remained a mechanic.”
Hannah heard him.
Her face collapsed.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“You just confessed to murder.”
“No. I expressed an opinion about a dead man.”
“You will not remain alive long enough to express many more.”
Sebastian laughed.
“Still pretending you control Providence? Look outside, Daniel. Your accounts are frozen. The police are hunting you. Your engagement is destroyed, your lieutenant has vanished, and your organization is already dividing.”
The call ended.
A guard confirmed the first part minutes later.
Federal regulators had frozen several Carver Maritime accounts after receiving evidence of money laundering.
Evidence created by Sebastian’s own operation.
Daniel had been framed using crimes committed beneath his name.
Martin entered from the hallway.
“We cannot remain here.”
Daniel looked at Caleb.
“Is there another copy of the evidence?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Aaron hid it.”
Hannah turned.
“He told me?”
“Not directly. His letter contains the location.”
Everyone looked at the unopened envelope in her hand.
Hannah broke the seal.
Aaron’s handwriting covered four pages.
She read silently at first.
Then her knees weakened.
Daniel caught her.
“What does it say?”
She handed him the final page.
Aaron had written:
I know the baby may belong to Daniel. I also know love is not measured by blood. This child is mine because I chose to love both of you before I ever saw its face.
Daniel stopped reading.
Beneath those words, Aaron had left an instruction.
Find the place where our baby would wake believing the sun lived in the room. The truth is behind the first sunrise.
Hannah covered her mouth.
“The nursery.”
Caleb nodded.
“Aaron hid the final evidence inside your apartment.”
Daniel looked toward the boarded windows.
The apartment had been seized after Aaron’s death and transferred to a Whitlock-owned property company.
Which meant Sebastian might already have found it.
“We move now,” Daniel said.
A guard approached him.
“There’s another problem.”
“What?”
“Ben Carter is missing from the estate.”
Hannah’s face went white.
“Who took him?”
The guard held out a tablet displaying security footage.

At 9:42 that morning, Ben had walked willingly through the service entrance.
Beside him was Claire Whitlock.
