Chapter 3: The Woman in the Dark

The gunshot shattered the restaurant.
Chloe dropped.
Not because Gabriel told her to.
Because her body remembered.
A gunshot was a sound the brain never forgot.
For half a second, she was twenty-two again.
Rain.
Headlights.
Leo's phone.
Blood on wet asphalt.
Then Gabriel grabbed her wrist.
"Down."
He pulled her behind the heavy dining table just as another shot tore through the room.
Glass exploded above them.
Beatrice ducked beside Chloe.
Gabriel was already moving.
He didn't panic.
That was the first thing Chloe noticed.
He became quieter.
Colder.
Focused.
He reached beneath his jacket and drew a weapon.
Chloe's breathing stopped.
Gabriel looked at her.
"Stay with my mother."
"I'm not—"
"Stay."
His voice left no room for argument.
Then he disappeared into the darkness.
Another shot echoed from the hallway.
A man screamed.
Someone knocked over a table.
The restaurant erupted.
Customers shouted.
Chairs scraped across the floor.
A woman began crying.
Marco yelled something from the main dining room.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Unsteady.
Chloe looked at Beatrice.
The old woman wasn't frightened.
She was furious.
Her hands moved.
Fast.
Chloe understood.
He is here.
"Who?"
Beatrice pointed toward the kitchen.
Then signed:
The man who knows.
Chloe's heart hammered.
"Which man?"
Beatrice pointed again.
But this time—
She wasn't pointing at the kitchen.
She was pointing behind Chloe.
Chloe turned.
Nothing.
Just the darkened VIP room.
Then she heard footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming from the hallway.
Gabriel appeared first.
His gun was lowered.
His expression was unreadable.
Behind him walked Dominic.
Blood ran from a cut above Dominic's eyebrow.
"Kitchen is secure," Dominic said.
Gabriel nodded.
"Vincent?"
"Still locked downstairs."
"Anyone missing?"
Dominic hesitated.
"One."
Gabriel's eyes hardened.
"Who?"
"The hostess."
Chloe frowned.
"Emily?"
Dominic nodded.
"She disappeared during the blackout."
Gabriel looked toward the door.
"Find her."
Dominic turned.
"Already looking."
Gabriel stopped him.
"Alive."
Dominic looked back.
"If she's involved?"
"Alive."
Dominic nodded.
Then left.
Gabriel turned toward Chloe.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Beatrice?"
Chloe looked at her.
Beatrice shook her head.
Gabriel exhaled quietly.
Then—
A metallic sound came from beneath the table.
Click.
Chloe froze.
Gabriel's eyes moved instantly.
He pulled Chloe behind him.
"Don't move."
The sound came again.
Click.
Something rolled across the floor.
A small black device.
Gabriel stared at it.
"Everybody out."
Chloe looked at him.
"What is that?"
"Move."
He grabbed Beatrice and pulled her toward the door.
Chloe followed.
They barely reached the hallway when the device exploded.
Not like a bomb.
A sharp electrical burst.
The lights died again.
The restaurant disappeared into darkness.
Smoke filled the corridor.
Chloe coughed.
Gabriel grabbed her hand.
"Chloe."
"I'm here."
"Don't let go."
She didn't.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Beatrice's hand touched Chloe's shoulder.
Chloe turned.
The old woman was signing.
He wanted you afraid.
Chloe understood.
"Who?"
Beatrice pointed at Gabriel.
Then toward Chloe.
Then made a sign Chloe had never seen before.
Chloe frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Beatrice repeated it.
Chloe shook her head.
"I don't know that sign."
Beatrice's eyes widened.
Then she grabbed Chloe's wrist.
She pulled her toward the nearest emergency light.
And slowly—
Very slowly—
She formed the sign again.
Chloe stared.
It wasn't a word.
It was a name.
Or part of one.
Her eyes widened.
"Leo?"
Beatrice nodded.
Gabriel turned.
"What did she say?"
Chloe looked at him.
"Leo."
Gabriel went completely still.
"Why?"
Beatrice began signing.
Her hands shook.
Chloe translated.
"She says Leo left something for her."
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"What?"
"A message."
"Where?"
Beatrice pointed toward the restaurant office.
Gabriel immediately moved.
Chloe followed.
They entered Marco's office.
The door slammed shut behind them.
Gabriel locked it.
He turned to Beatrice.
"What message?"
Beatrice looked at Chloe.
Then she signed.
A key.
Chloe translated.
"A key."
Gabriel frowned.
"What key?"
Beatrice touched her necklace.
Chloe looked closer.
The pearl necklace.
One pearl was slightly different.
Darker.
Larger.
Gabriel reached toward it.
Beatrice slapped his hand away.
He stopped.
She signed.
Not you.
Then she pointed at Chloe.
Chloe stared.
"Me?"
Beatrice nodded.
Gabriel looked confused.
"Why would Leo leave something with you?"
"I don't know."
Beatrice pointed again.
Chloe slowly reached toward the necklace.
She touched the unusual pearl.
It clicked.
The pearl opened.
Inside was a tiny brass key.
Chloe stared at it.
Gabriel stared at it.
Nobody spoke.
Then Gabriel whispered,
"Where did you get that?"
Beatrice answered with her hands.
Chloe translated.
"Leo gave it to her."
Gabriel looked at his mother.
"When?"
Beatrice signed.
The night before he died.
Chloe's knees nearly gave out.
"You knew my brother?"
Beatrice nodded.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Beatrice's eyes filled with tears.
She signed.
Because I promised him.
Chloe looked at Gabriel.
"She promised Leo."
Gabriel's voice was low.
"Promised him what?"
Beatrice looked at Chloe.
Then signed.
That I would wait until you were safe.
Chloe frowned.
"Safe from what?"
Beatrice didn't answer.
She pointed toward Gabriel.
Chloe stared.
"No."
Beatrice nodded.
"She thinks I'm in danger from Gabriel?"
Gabriel's face hardened.
"Ask her."
Chloe translated.
Beatrice shook her head.
She pointed toward Gabriel again.
Then toward herself.
Then made another sign.
Not from him.
Chloe paused.
"Not from you."
Gabriel relaxed slightly.
Then Beatrice finished the sentence.
From the people around him.
Gabriel's expression changed.
He looked at Chloe.
"What does the key open?"
Beatrice shook her head.
She didn't know.
Chloe looked at the tiny brass key.
There was a number engraved on it.
Gabriel saw it.
"Seventeen."
Chloe nodded.
"Any idea?"
Gabriel thought.
Then his eyes moved toward the floor.
"Warehouse seventeen."
Dominic appeared at the office door.
"We have a problem."
Gabriel turned.
"What?"
"Vincent is gone."
Silence.
Gabriel's face became expressionless.
"Explain."
"The holding room was locked."
"Then unlock it."
"We did."
"And?"
"Empty."
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
"Camera?"
"Blackout killed the feed."
Gabriel stared at Dominic.
"How convenient."
Dominic didn't answer.
Gabriel looked at Chloe.
Then at the key.
"Nobody touches her."
Dominic nodded.
Gabriel continued.
"Nobody follows her."
Another nod.
"And nobody tells anyone she's carrying that key."
Dominic's eyes moved toward Chloe.
"Understood."
Then—
A voice came through the hallway.
"Gabriel."
Everyone turned.
Marco stood there.
His face was white.
"What?"
Marco swallowed.
"You need to see this."
Gabriel followed him.
Chloe and Beatrice came behind.
They reached the main dining room.
The tables were overturned.
Broken glass covered the floor.
Guests had been moved into one corner.
Security guards stood near the entrance.
Marco pointed toward the wall.
A message had been written across it.
Three words.
In black marker.
ASK THE WAITRESS.
Chloe stopped breathing.
Gabriel looked at her.
Then at the message.
Dominic whispered,
"This isn't about the shipment anymore."
Gabriel nodded.
"No."
He stared at Chloe.
"It's about her."
Chloe shook her head.
"I don't understand."
Gabriel stepped closer.
"Neither do I."
Then Beatrice raised her hands.
Chloe looked.
Her mother's expression had changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
She signed four words.
Chloe translated.
"She knows who wrote it."
Gabriel turned.
"Who?"
Beatrice pointed toward the security cameras.
Then toward the ceiling.
Then toward the office.
Finally—
She pointed at Dominic.
Dominic froze.
Gabriel looked at him.
"Why are you pointing at him?"
Beatrice shook her head violently.
She wasn't accusing Dominic.
She was trying to warn Gabriel about something else.
Chloe understood.
"She's saying not Dominic."
Gabriel looked at his mother.
"Then what?"
Beatrice pointed at Dominic again.
Then made the sign for dead.
Chloe's stomach dropped.
"She says Dominic is dead."
Everyone stared at Dominic.
The lieutenant frowned.
"What?"
Beatrice repeated it.
Dominic is dead.
Chloe looked between them.
"She doesn't mean literally."
Gabriel understood.
"She means the Dominic we know is dead."
The room became silent.
Dominic's face hardened.
"Boss."
Gabriel didn't answer.
Beatrice stepped closer.
She touched Dominic's sleeve.
Then she signed.
He changed.
Dominic looked at her.
"I've always been the same."
Beatrice stared at him.
Then signed:
No.
Chloe felt the tension rise.
Gabriel stepped between them.
"Mother."
Beatrice looked at him.
"Are you saying Dominic betrayed me?"
Beatrice shook her head.
Then pointed at Dominic.
Then at herself.
Then made a gesture Chloe didn't understand.
Chloe frowned.
"Wait."
She stepped closer.
"Do that again."
Beatrice repeated it.
Chloe stared.
She remembered Leo.
The same gesture.
A person wearing another person's face.
Someone pretending.
Someone replaced.
Chloe whispered,
"She's saying someone has been pretending to be Dominic."
Gabriel stared.
Dominic went pale.
"What?"
Gabriel turned toward him.
"How long have you worked for me?"
"Seventeen years."
"Where were you born?"
"Brooklyn."
"Mother's name?"
"Angela."
Gabriel nodded.
"First job?"
Dominic answered immediately.
"Port Newark."
Gabriel's eyes narrowed.
"That's not what you told me last year."
Dominic's face changed.
Only slightly.
Gabriel saw it.
Chloe saw it.
Beatrice saw it.
Gabriel stepped backward.
"Tell me again."
Dominic remained silent.
Gabriel's voice became almost gentle.
"Where did you work before me?"
Dominic looked toward the exit.
That was enough.
Gabriel raised his weapon.
"Don't."
Dominic moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
He struck Gabriel's wrist.
The gun fell.
Chloe screamed.
Beatrice stepped backward.
Dominic grabbed Gabriel's collar.
Gabriel drove his elbow into Dominic's ribs.
Dominic stumbled.
Gabriel hit him once.
Hard.
Dominic crashed against the table.
Two security men rushed forward.
"Nobody!"
Gabriel shouted.
They stopped.
Dominic slowly stood.
Blood ran from his lip.
Gabriel stared at him.
"You've been lying to me."
Dominic smiled.
Not the smile Chloe knew.
Something colder.
"About what?"
Gabriel stepped closer.
"My entire life."
Dominic laughed quietly.
"You still don't understand."
Gabriel's eyes hardened.
"Then explain."
Dominic looked toward Chloe.
"He knows."
Chloe froze.
Gabriel turned.
"Who?"
Dominic smiled.
"Your mother."
Beatrice's face went pale.
Dominic continued.
"She knows exactly what happened to your brother."
Chloe's heart stopped.
Gabriel looked at Beatrice.
"Mother?"
Beatrice couldn't move.
Dominic laughed.
"Ask her."
Chloe turned toward Beatrice.
"Please."
The old woman's eyes filled with tears.
She raised her hands.
Slowly.
I didn't kill him.
Chloe swallowed.
"I know."
Beatrice continued.
But I knew he would die.
Chloe's face collapsed.
"What?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"What did she say?"
Chloe couldn't speak.
Beatrice repeated it.
I knew he would die.
Gabriel's face became unreadable.
Dominic smiled.
"Now you're finally asking the right questions."
Gabriel turned toward him.
"How did you know about Leo?"
Dominic's smile disappeared.
"Because I was there."
Chloe stared.
"You were there?"
Dominic looked at her.
"The night your brother died."
Her knees weakened.
Gabriel caught her before she fell.
Dominic continued.
"Your brother wasn't driving."
Chloe looked up.
"What?"
"He wasn't driving."
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"Who was?"
Dominic said nothing.
Chloe stepped forward.
"Who?"
Dominic looked at her.
Then at Gabriel.
And finally—
At Beatrice.
"Ask your mother."
Beatrice began crying.
Not loudly.
No dramatic sound.
Just tears.
Her hands trembled.
Chloe looked at her.
"Please."
Beatrice signed.
Leo came to me because he was afraid.
Chloe translated.
"He was afraid."
He had evidence.
"What evidence?"
Beatrice pointed toward the key.
Then signed.
The ledger.
Gabriel stared.
"Which ledger?"
Beatrice pointed toward Chloe.
Then toward the key.
Then toward Gabriel.
The ledger that proves who ordered the killings.
Chloe's blood turned cold.
Gabriel looked at Dominic.
"You've been searching for that ledger."
Dominic said nothing.
Gabriel understood.
"That's why Vincent was working for you."
Dominic smiled.
"Vincent was never working for me."
Gabriel frowned.
Dominic looked toward the hallway.
"He was working for someone much higher."
"Who?"
Dominic's eyes moved to Beatrice.
Then back to Gabriel.
"Your father."
The room went silent.
Gabriel didn't move.
"My father has been dead for fourteen years."
Dominic nodded.
"Exactly."
Chloe felt a chill move through her.
Dominic continued.
"Your father didn't die fourteen years ago."
Gabriel stared.
"What?"
"He disappeared."
"No."
"He built a second life."
"You're lying."
Dominic shook his head.
"I'm not."
Gabriel grabbed his collar.
"Where is he?"
Dominic smiled.
"I don't know."
Gabriel tightened his grip.
"Then who does?"
Dominic looked at Chloe.
"The man who has been protecting your brother's secret for two years."
Chloe whispered,
"Leo is dead."
Dominic's eyes softened.
"I know."
"Then who protected his secret?"
Dominic didn't answer.
A phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The sound came from Gabriel's pocket.
He pulled it out.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Who is this?"
Silence.
Then—
A man's voice.
Old.
Rough.
Familiar.
Gabriel's face drained of color.
Chloe watched him.
"Gabriel?"
He didn't respond.
The voice on the phone spoke again.
"Son."
Gabriel stopped breathing.
The phone slipped slightly in his hand.
Chloe stared at him.
Beatrice covered her mouth.
Gabriel whispered one word.
"Father?"
The voice answered.
"Your mother should have told you the truth years ago."
Then the call ended.
Gabriel stood frozen.
For the first time since Chloe had met him—
The mafia boss looked afraid.
Not of death.
Not of betrayal.
Not of the gunman hiding somewhere inside his own restaurant.
He looked afraid of the past.
And Beatrice—
She was staring at Chloe.
Her hands moved one final time.
He is coming for you.
Chloe felt every hair on her arms rise.
"Who?"
Beatrice pointed at Gabriel.
Then toward the door.
Then signed:
His father.
The lights suddenly came back on.
And on every television screen in the restaurant—
A photograph appeared.
Leo Bennett.
Alive.
Standing beside an older man.
Gabriel Costello's father.
The date stamped beneath the photograph was from three months ago.
Chloe stopped breathing.
Because beneath Leo's photograph were four words.
HE NEVER DIED THERE.
Gabriel stared at the screen.
Then whispered,
"Where is my brother?"
Chloe looked at Beatrice.
The old woman shook her head.
She didn't know.
Then every television went black.
Except one.
A final message appeared.
WAREHOUSE 17. MIDNIGHT.
Gabriel looked at the brass key in Chloe's hand.
Then at the clock.
11:37 p.m.
He looked at her.
"We have twenty-three minutes."
Chloe stared back.
"To do what?"
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"Find out whether your brother was murdered."
He paused.
"Or whether someone has been pretending he was dead for two years."
Outside—
A car engine roared.
Then another.
Then another.
Gabriel looked toward the windows.
Three black SUVs had stopped outside Il Canto.
Doors opened.
Men stepped out.
Gabriel's phone vibrated again.
One new message.
Don't bring your men.
A second message appeared.
Bring the waitress.
Then a third.
Come alone.
Gabriel looked at Chloe.
She already knew what he was going to say.
"No."
Gabriel frowned.
"No?"
"I'm coming."
"Absolutely not."
"My brother is involved."
"This is exactly why you stay here."
Chloe stepped closer.
"You don't get to decide that."
Gabriel stared at her.
"You don't understand what you're walking into."
Chloe looked at the screen where Leo's photograph had appeared.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"No."
She wiped them away.
"But for the first time in two years—
"I finally know where to look."
Beatrice took Chloe's hand.
Then Gabriel's.
She placed their hands together.
Neither expected it.
Gabriel looked down.
Chloe looked at him.
Beatrice signed slowly.
Bring her home.
Gabriel's expression softened.
He nodded.
"I will."
Beatrice looked at Chloe.
Then signed:
And if you see Leo—
She stopped.
Chloe waited.
Beatrice's hands trembled.
Then finished.
Don't let him trust your father.
Gabriel's eyes hardened.
The mystery had just changed.
Leo wasn't the only person who had been hiding.
Someone had been hiding him.
Someone had been protecting him.
And someone had spent two years making sure Chloe believed her brother was dead.
At 11:41 p.m., Gabriel Costello took Chloe Bennett by the hand.
At 11:42, they walked out the back door.
At 11:43, three black SUVs followed them into the rain.
And at 11:44—
Inside Warehouse 17—
A man opened an old metal box.
Inside was a photograph of Leo.
A blood-stained driver's license.
And a single handwritten note.
The man unfolded it.
Read it.
Then smiled.
Because the note had been written by Leo himself.
Five words.
If Chloe comes, trust her.
The man folded the paper.
Looked toward the warehouse entrance.
May you like
And whispered,
"She's finally here."
