Chapter 1 — The Name She Never Forgot

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one dared speak.

The little girl stared at the man before her, confused by the tears gathering in his eyes.

He knelt again until they were face to face.

"What... what's your name?" he asked carefully.

"Emma."

His heartbeat stumbled.

"My full name is Emma Grace."

Grace.

His mother's name.

Only one person had ever promised to give that name to her daughter.

His younger sister.

Lillian.

The sister everyone believed had disappeared sixteen years earlier.

He swallowed hard.

"Who was your mother?"

The little girl hesitated.

"Mommy's name was Lillian."

The silver crest nearly slipped from his fingers.

A painful silence spread through the ballroom.

The woman in blue quietly stepped backward.

"No..."

she whispered.

"This isn't possible."

The young man slowly stood.

"My name is Alexander Ashford."

His voice echoed through the grand hall.

"And if this child is Lillian's daughter..."

he turned toward the guests,

"...then she is the rightful heir of the Ashford family."

The room exploded into whispers.

Every guest knew what the Ashford fortune represented.

Billions.

Companies across three continents.

Generations of old money.
