Chapter 9 - THE HEARING

Judge Evelyn Mercer denied Damian’s emergency petition in eleven minutes.

She did something more important afterward.

She ordered preservation of all communications relating to the medical records.

Damian’s attorney objected.

Judge Mercer did not care.

Sabrina’s attorney objected.

Judge Mercer cared even less.

The order covered phones.

Emails.

Corporate servers.

Cloud accounts.

Medical communications.

Billing records.

Everything.

Peter called it the electronic equivalent of locking every exit.

Damian called me that night from a new number.

I did not answer.

He left a voicemail.

“Claire, listen to me.”

His voice was calm.

That frightened me more than shouting.

“You are letting strangers convince you that everything we built was fake.”

Pause.

“You know me.”

Another pause.

“You know what I’ve done for you.”

Then came the Damian I remembered.

Soft.

Persuasive.

Almost wounded.

“You’re carrying my daughter.”

I stared at the phone.

“Our daughter,” he continued.

“Do you really want her born into this?”

My daughter moved beneath my palm.

Then his voice hardened.

“Call me before Naomi Price destroys what little chance we have left.”

The voicemail ended.

I saved three copies.

By then, Damian had ignored the court’s communication restrictions twice.

Naomi documented both.

He was not collapsing dramatically.

That would come later.

For now, he was testing the fence.

Seeing which parts could bend.

Two days later, Cross Meridian announced Damian was taking a temporary leave.

The board claimed it was voluntary.

Peter had contacts who said otherwise.

Investors were asking questions about Wren Consulting.

Auditors wanted invoices.

There were none.

Six million dollars had left the company with almost no legitimate documentation.

Then another problem appeared.

My signature was not the only one forged.

One belonged to a deceased board member.

Another to Thomas Cole.

A third to Elena Ruiz.

This had grown beyond divorce.

Beyond me.

Federal financial investigators became involved.

My father immediately withdrew even further.

“I don’t want anyone claiming I influenced anything.”

“I understand.”

“I won’t discuss the criminal investigation with anyone.”

“I understand.”

His restraint mattered.

Damian had begun publicly suggesting Nathaniel was orchestrating a vendetta.

But every time my father refused involvement, that story weakened.

Damian needed a corrupt judge.

Instead, he had a father standing on the sidelines.

The evidence was doing the work.

Then Elena returned.

She walked into Naomi’s office wearing a baseball cap and carrying a grocery bag.

I stood so quickly my chair fell.

“Where were you?”

“Safe.”

“We thought you were dead.”

“I almost was.”

She placed the grocery bag on the table.

Inside were three external hard drives.

“I didn’t give you everything at the diner.”

Naomi stared.

“What is this?”

“The archive.”

“What archive?”

Elena looked at me.

“The one Damian thought I destroyed.”

She connected the first drive.

Folders appeared.

Hundreds.

Maybe thousands.

Each labeled with names.

Companies.

Employees.

Politicians.

Journalists.

Bankers.

Women.

My name was there too.

CLAIRE WARD CROSS.

Elena clicked.

Inside were photographs of me taken before I met Damian.

Leaving work.

Meeting my father.

Eating lunch.

Walking into my apartment.

Two years of surveillance.

I could barely breathe.

Damian had not simply researched me.

He had watched me.

Studied me.

Learned my routines.

My friends.

My weaknesses.

My loneliness.

Then he had introduced himself.

As if fate had brought us together.

Elena looked sick.

“I’m sorry.”

“How long?”

“The file started nine years ago.”

My marriage lasted seven.

Damian had been planning his entrance into my life for two years before saying hello.

Then Elena opened another folder.

BENNETT SUCCESSION.

Inside was a timeline.

My mother’s death.

My trust.

My estrangement from Nathaniel.

My marriage.

My pregnancy.

My due date.

At the bottom, one final line.

CONTROL TRANSFERS UPON LIVE BIRTH.
