Chapter 19 — THE LAST NIGHT OF THE DELUCA EMPIRE

The name on the paper was Adrian DeLuca.
Vincent's uncle.
His father's younger brother.
A man I had seen exactly three times in my life.
At least, that's what I remembered.
He had attended my father's funeral.
He had stood beside Vincent's grandfather.
He had sent flowers to my mother after my father disappeared.
And every time I saw him, he had looked at me with the same gentle smile.
I stared at Vincent.
"You know him."
Vincent didn't answer.
My father did.
"Adrian was the only person who knew where every piece of Project Blue was."
Vincent's jaw tightened.
"He was supposed to be dead."
My father shook his head.
"No."
"Then where is he?"
My father looked at the window.
"Chicago."
A cold feeling spread through me.
"He's been here the entire time?"
"Yes."
"Watching me?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
My father looked directly at me.
"Because you are the final beneficiary of the Blue Trust."
I frowned.
"I thought the trust was money."
"It was never money."
He pointed toward the paper.
"The trust was a legal mechanism."
"For what?"
"To expose every person connected to the network."
I stared at him.
"Then why do I have to unlock it?"
"Because your father created it under your name."
"But why?"
"Because nobody could legally seize it without you."
Vincent suddenly understood.
"The beneficiary."
My father nodded.
"Once Emily became an adult, she became the only person capable of releasing everything."
I looked at the USB drive Margaret had given me.
"Then Adrian has been waiting for me to become twenty-seven."
"Yes."
"Why didn't he simply kill me?"
My father's expression darkened.
"Because killing you would destroy the trust."
I felt sick.
"So I wasn't a person to him."
"No."
"You were an asset."
My father shook his head.
"You were leverage."
I looked at Vincent.
"And Elias?"
"Elias was Adrian's enforcer."
"Isabella?"
"His political connection."
"Tyler?"
"His disposable pawn."
"Vanessa?"
My father smiled sadly.
"Vanessa was never his."
I looked toward her.
She nodded.
"My family owed your father a debt."
"He saved us."
"He did."
"So you infiltrated Tyler's life?"
"Yes."
"To get close to me?"
"Yes."
I exhaled.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Adrian was watching."
Everything suddenly made sense.
Tyler had been manipulated.
Vanessa had been placed near him.
My mother had changed my identity.
Margaret had protected me.
Vincent had watched me.
Elias had hunted my father.
And Adrian had stood quietly behind all of them.
The entire conspiracy had been built around one thing.
Me.
My father stood.
"There is one final location."
"Where?"
"Your grandfather's original estate."
Vincent's face hardened.
"The DeLuca estate?"
My father nodded.
"The original Blue Trust server is beneath it."
Vincent shook his head.
"That property was sold."
"No."
My father looked at him.
"Your grandfather transferred it to Adrian before his death."
Vincent's eyes went cold.
"Then we're going there."
My father grabbed his arm.
"No."
Vincent looked at him.
"You don't understand."
"I understand exactly."
My father shook his head.
"Adrian wants you there."
"Good."
"He wants Emily there."
"I know."
"He wants the final key."
Vincent looked at me.
"Then we make sure he doesn't get it."
We left before dawn.
No army.
No convoy.
No army of Vincent's men.
He had given that life up.
We went with only Vanessa, my father and Margaret.
Four people.
One car.
One key.
One final chance.
The estate stood on a hill overlooking the city.
It was enormous.
Stone walls.
Iron gates.
Dead gardens.
The place where Vincent's grandfather had built the foundation of the DeLuca empire.
When we arrived, the gates were already open.
Vincent stopped.
"This is wrong."
"What?"
"No guards."
My father looked at the house.
"He's waiting."
We entered.
The doors opened before we touched them.
Adrian stood inside.
He was older than Vincent.
Elegant.
Calm.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
He smiled.
"Emily."
I stared at him.
"You knew me."
"Of course."
"You watched me grow up."
"Yes."
"You ruined my father's life."
"No."
He smiled.
"Your father ruined his own life."
Vincent stepped forward.
"Enough."
Adrian laughed.
"You sound like your father."
"I am not my father."
"No."
Adrian looked at me.
"You're worse."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because you inherited his conscience."
He reached toward a console.
The wall behind him opened.
A staircase appeared.
"The final archive is below."
My father whispered:
"Don't."
I looked at him.
"I have to."
Adrian smiled.
"Exactly."
We descended.
The underground room was enormous.
Banks of old servers lined the walls.
Thousands of documents.
Hard drives.
Paper records.
Photographs.
Everything.
The entire history of the Blue Trust.
Adrian walked toward a central terminal.
"Put the key in."
I held it.
"Why?"
"Because you want the truth."
I looked at Vincent.
He nodded.
I inserted the key.
The system came alive.
A screen appeared.
BENEFICIARY IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED.
A camera scanned my face.
Then another message.
EMILY VALE — VERIFIED.
A countdown appeared.
ARCHIVE RELEASE IN 60 SECONDS.
Adrian smiled.
"You see?"
"What?"
"You were never the victim."
I stared at him.
"You were the lock."
The countdown reached forty.
Thirty.
Twenty.
Then Adrian pulled a gun.
Vincent moved instantly.
A shot rang out.
The screen shattered.
I screamed.
Vincent pushed me behind him.
Adrian laughed.
"You can't stop the release."
He fired again.
Vincent stumbled.
"Vincent!"
He looked at me.
"I'm okay."
He wasn't.
Blood darkened his shirt.
But he stayed standing.
I looked at the terminal.
The countdown continued.
10.
9.
8.
I realized something.
My father had built the system.
And he had taught me one thing when I was seven.
If someone gives you only two choices, look for the third.
I grabbed the keyboard.
Adrian shouted.
"Don't!"
5.
I entered my father's old phrase.
The one he used to say before bedtime.
3.
The system paused.
IDENTITY CONFIRMED.
ARCHIVE DESTINATION?
I smiled.
"Everywhere."
I pressed ENTER.
The archive uploaded.
Phones began ringing upstairs.
Then another.
Then another.
News alerts exploded across every screen.
The evidence was no longer inside the Blue Trust.
It was everywhere.
Public servers.
Journalists.
Federal investigators.
Independent archives.
The truth could no longer be buried.
Adrian stared at the screen.
For the first time...
he looked afraid.
"No."
Vincent stepped forward.
"You lost."
Adrian raised the gun again.
But Vanessa was faster.
She knocked it from his hand.
My father grabbed Adrian.
They struggled.
Then sirens filled the estate.
Federal agents stormed the room.
Adrian was arrested.
Elias was captured two days later.
Isabella was taken into custody after investigators traced her accounts.
Tyler was arrested for kidnapping, fraud and conspiracy.
He tried to bargain.
Nobody listened.
Vanessa testified.
Margaret testified.
My father testified.
And eventually...
Vincent testified too.
He gave investigators everything.
Including evidence against his own family.
The DeLuca empire didn't survive.
Not the way it had existed.
Companies were dismantled.
Accounts were frozen.
Properties were seized.
The old network collapsed.
And for the first time in generations...
the DeLuca name no longer meant fear.
It meant accountability.
Three months later, my father stood beside me outside the courthouse.
He looked at me.
"I owe you twenty years."
I smiled.
"You owe me breakfast."
He laughed.
"I can do that."
I hugged him.
For the first time since I was seven...
I didn't have to imagine what it felt like to have a father.
I knew.
Then I looked across the street.
Vincent was waiting.
Not surrounded by bodyguards.
Not wearing the expression of a man who owned Chicago.
Just Vincent.
My Vincent.
May you like
He smiled.
And I walked toward him.
