Chapter 4 - THE MAN BEHIND THE DOJO

Coach Mason Reed had trusted only three people in his life.

His father.

His mother.

And Coach Samuel Grant.

Samuel had trained him since he was twelve.

He had taught him discipline.

Patience.

Humility.

He had attended every important fight.

Every injury.

Every victory.

Mason couldn't believe it.

"He wouldn't."

Elena didn't argue.

"Then prove me wrong."

They returned to Blackwood before dawn.

The dojo looked untouched.

But Mason noticed immediately.

The back office door was open.

The financial records were gone.

The security cameras were disconnected.

Someone had been there.

Mason checked the hidden safe beneath the floor.

Empty.

Elena whispered:

"Too late."

Then the lights turned on.

Samuel stood in the doorway.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Calm.

He held no weapon.

"You should have stayed away."

Mason stared.

"How long?"

Samuel sighed.

"Twenty years."

"You worked for Hale."

"I worked to keep you alive."

"That's what everyone says."

Samuel looked at Elena.

"She knows."

Mason turned.

"What does she know?"

Samuel walked closer.

"Your father didn't disappear alone."

Mason froze.

"Who went with him?"

Samuel answered:

"Me."

The room went silent.

Samuel explained.

After Daniel discovered Project Blackwood, he realized the entire system was too large to fight directly.

Police were compromised.

Judges were compromised.

Politicians were involved.

Even some martial arts organizations were receiving money.

Daniel needed proof.

So Samuel helped him disappear.

They spent years collecting evidence.

But there was one problem.

Hale had people everywhere.

Including Blackwood.

Samuel had been forced to play both sides.

He allowed Hale to believe he controlled the dojo.

Meanwhile, he used it to protect young fighters.

Mason looked around.

"So all these years..."

"Yes."

"You let Hale fund us?"

"If I refused, he'd replace me with someone loyal."

"And the fighters?"

"I protected them."

Mason stared.

"Then why the tournament?"

Samuel's face hardened.

"Because Hale changed the rules."

He explained.

Hale was no longer interested in controlling fighters.

He wanted political power.

He intended to create a private security network using former fighters and corrupt officers.

If elected governor, he would control thousands.

The tournament was his recruitment event.

Mason whispered:

"And my father?"

Samuel looked down.

"Still alive."

Mason's heart jumped.

"Where?"

"Underground."

"Take me to him."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because Hale has him."

Silence.

Mason stepped forward.

"You said—"

"I said he survived."

Samuel looked at Elena.

"But three days ago, Hale found him."

Mason closed his fists.

"Then we go get him."

Samuel shook his head.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because Hale wants you to attack."

Mason stopped.

"He wants you angry."

"Exactly."

"He'll use me."

"Yes."

"So what do we do?"

Samuel pulled out a flash drive.

"This."

Mason took it.

"What is it?"

"The complete Blackwood archive."

Names.

Payments.

Orders.

Videos.

Confessions.

Everything.

Mason looked at the drive.

"Why didn't you release it?"

"Because the files alone aren't enough."

"Why?"

"People can deny documents."

Samuel pointed at a laptop.

"But they can't deny themselves."

He opened a video.

Victor Hale appeared on screen.

He was younger.

Standing inside the same underground theater.

Behind him were dozens of fighters.

Hale spoke.

"These boys don't need freedom."

Mason's face tightened.

"They need purpose."

Another man entered.

Daniel.

Young.

Angry.

He confronted Hale.

The video showed Daniel shouting.

"You are destroying children."

Hale smiled.

"No."

He pointed toward the fighters.

"I'm building soldiers."

The recording continued.

Then came the worst part.

Hale ordered someone to beat the seventeen-year-old fighter.

Daniel tried to stop them.

The camera captured everything.

Mason watched his father being dragged away.

Then the screen froze.

Timestamp:

Mason covered his mouth.

Elena looked away.

Samuel closed the laptop.

"We need one more thing."

"What?"

"Hale's confession."

Mason stared.

"How?"

"He's giving a speech tomorrow night."

"Campaign event?"

"Yes."

"Public?"

"Very."

Samuel smiled.

"Then we give him a microphone."

The next evening, the ballroom was packed.

Victor Hale stood beneath enormous lights.

Cameras everywhere.

Politicians applauded.

Reporters waited.

Mason entered through the back door.

Elena followed.

Samuel stayed outside.

Hale stepped onto the stage.

"My friends..."

Applause.

"I believe strength is responsibility."

More applause.

Mason watched him.

Hale continued.

"A society must be protected."

Then he smiled.

"Sometimes protection requires difficult choices."

Mason's phone vibrated.

A message.

NOW.

He pressed one button.

The giant screen behind Hale changed.

The audience gasped.

Old footage appeared.

Young fighters.

Blood.

Threats.

Money.

Hale shouting orders.

The ballroom erupted.

Hale turned.

His face went white.

"What is this?"

Mason walked onto the stage.

The crowd recognized him.

He held a microphone.

"You wanted strength."

Hale stared.

"You."

Mason nodded.

"You taught us fear."

The screen changed.

Daniel appeared.

Alive.

Older.

Standing in a safe location.

He looked into the camera.

"My name is Daniel Reed."

The room went silent.

"I was supposed to have died twenty-two years ago."

Hale backed away.

Police moved.

But nobody knew whom to arrest.

Then Samuel entered.

Behind him came federal investigators.

Hale shouted:

"You're finished!"

Samuel replied:

"No."

He looked at Mason.

"We are."

The investigators moved forward.

Hale tried to escape.

Mason stepped into his path.

For the first time, Hale looked afraid.

"You think beating me changes anything?"

Mason shook his head.

"No."

May you like

He lowered the microphone.

"Truth does."
