Chapter 2: The Price of Respect

The businessman reached into his jacket and placed a folder on the table.

Nobody touched it.

"You know what fascinates me?" he said calmly.

The fiancé said nothing.

"People often mistake wealth for character."

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Contracts.

Financial reports.

Partnership agreements.

The mother-in-law stared.

Then her eyes widened in horror.

Their family company.

Every major project.

Every expansion.

Every investment planned for the next five years.

All connected to one corporate group.

His group.

The businessman looked at the fiancé.

"Your family has spent years trying to secure a strategic partnership with my company."

The young man's lips trembled.

"Sir..."

"And yet tonight, while trying to impress people you considered important, you failed the only test that mattered."

The businessman turned toward his daughter.

"You sat here for three hours."

She nodded quietly.

"You were insulted."

Another nod.

"And the man who claims he loves you watched it happen."

The fiancé lowered his head.

Shame flooded his face.

Because there was no defense.

No excuse.

No explanation.

The businessman closed the folder.

"You do not lose opportunities because you're poor."

His eyes settled on the room.

"You lose them because of who you choose to be when nobody important is watching."

The words struck harder than any threat.

Because everyone knew he was right.

Then he took his daughter's hand.

"Let's go."

The fiancé suddenly stepped forward.

"Wait."

She looked at him.

His voice cracked.

"I love you."

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then she smiled sadly.

The kind of smile reserved for something already over.

"You loved the version of me you thought needed your approval."

Tears filled his eyes.

She continued.

"But you never protected the real me."

May you like

And with that...

she turned away.
