Chapter 1: The Woman Who Remembered

The old cleaner stared into Danny's eyes.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The ballroom continued behind them as if nothing had happened.

Laughter.

Music.

Champagne.

But for Danny, time had stopped.

"What... did you say your son's name was?" he whispered again.

"Danny."

The woman smiled sadly.

"He was six years old when I lost him."

Danny felt his knees weaken.

"How did you lose him?"

Her hands tightened around the wet cloth.

"They told me he died."

Silence.

Danny's heartbeat thundered inside his chest.

"I never believed them," she continued. "A mother always knows."

Danny reached into his wallet.

Inside was an old photograph he had carried for years.

It showed a little boy sitting beside a young woman whose face had been torn away.

Only half of her smile remained.

He handed it to her.

The old woman's fingers trembled.

Then she screamed.

"My baby..."

Tears poured down her face as she recognized the blanket wrapped around the child.

"I made this blanket myself."

Danny's own eyes filled.

No one else could have known that.

No one.

She looked up at him.

"They changed your hair."

"They changed your name."

"But they couldn't change your eyes."

She reached toward his face.

"My Danny..."

Before she could touch him...

A loud voice interrupted.

"There you are, Mr. Crawford."

Danny turned.

His longtime family lawyer, Richard Hale, stood at the end of the hallway.

His smile looked forced.

His face had gone pale.

He had been watching everything.

And for the first time in thirty years...

Richard looked afraid.
