The number eventually reached sixty-two.
Sixty-two confirmed or probable biological children linked to Adrian Vale.
The earliest birth occurred in 1976.
The latest was Maddie’s year.
Nearly four decades.
Vale had died eighteen months after Maddie’s birth.
There would be no criminal trial against him.
But Northbrook was still operating.
Its board claimed Vale had acted alone.
Susan Halpern disagreed.
“He could not have done this for forty years without people refusing to notice.”
Then investigators discovered payments.
Former nurses.
Administrators.
A laboratory supervisor.

One payment went to Evelyn Mercer.
Rachel understood immediately why the clinic’s lawyers had fought so hard to keep decades-old financial records sealed.
The scandal became national news.
Families came forward from across the country.
Some wanted answers.
Some wanted privacy.

Grant disappeared from public view for nearly a month.
Then he did something Rachel did not expect.
He called a press conference.
No ballroom.
No foundation backdrop.
No corporate branding.
He stood alone.
“My daughter Maddie was conceived through donor conception with my full knowledge and consent.”
Rachel watched from home.
“I publicly denied her because I was ashamed of my infertility and angry at my wife.”
He paused.
“There is no excuse for what I did.”

Grant continued.
“Subsequent testing established that the physician responsible for fertility treatment used his own genetic material without our knowledge.”
Another pause.
“That same physician was also my biological father.”
The room erupted.
Grant raised his voice.
“This changes nothing about who Maddie is to me.”
Rachel watched carefully.
“She is my daughter legally because I consented to her conception. She is my daughter emotionally because I raised her. And she is my daughter because fatherhood is a responsibility I accepted before she was born.”
His expression tightened.
“I abandoned that responsibility publicly for one unforgivable moment.”
