Chapter 2: The Woman Who Stole a Life

Three days later, DNA results confirmed the impossible.

Emma Ashford.

Biological daughter of Victoria Ashford.

The media exploded.

But another question remained.

Who had taken her?

The answer arrived unexpectedly.

Emma's adoptive mother, Grace, walked into the Ashford estate carrying an old wooden box.

She was crying before she spoke.

"I never stole her."

Inside the box were letters, photographs, and a confession.

Grace explained that twenty-two years earlier, she had found an abandoned newborn wrapped in a hospital blanket near a roadside chapel after the storm.

She reported the child to local authorities.

No missing infant report had reached that small town because of the widespread communication failures caused by the disaster.

Unable to have children herself, Grace legally adopted the baby months later after every required waiting period had expired.

"I thought someone had abandoned her."

Victoria slowly reached across the table and took Grace's hand.

"You gave my daughter a life."

Grace broke down.

"I could never replace her real mother."

Emma looked at the two women who had shaped her life in different ways.

One had given her life.

The other had taught her how to live it.

She embraced them both.

For the first time in decades, no one was fighting over love.

They were sharing it.

Only Daniel remained silent.
